Do you split up your groups or keep them together?

By Rogue Dakotan, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

When running groups with multiple figures, do you keep figures in the same group together, or split them up?

The benefit of keeping them together would be to focus fire during their activation, while the befit of splitting them up would be to make it harder to kill off an entire group.

Which do you prefer?

For me it depends on the purpose of the group and state of the game.

-If its early in the game and they have other benefits from remaining close I may keep them together.

-If my opponent is running blast I'll probably split them regardless just to keep the temptation away.

-If II need to deny my opponent while I down the last figure or complete and achievement. I'll generally split the group up in opposite directions making it difficult for them to snipe any last second points.

It depends on the situation, but most of the time I tend to keep them together. This is especially true for the 2-figure groups. For the 3-figure groups (ie, Troopers) I sometimes tend to keep one back at all times so that I have an option for Reinforcements if needed.

2 figure groups I keep together so that they can both attack together.

3 figure groups I split up with one dude running to an objective.

I was askng a friend this same question just the other day. I decided to try splitting my wookie warriors up during out next game but it didn't really matter because it was "Drinks and Dealings" and everyone just wound up back together again in the cantina.

I think there are situations when you could argue either way but I'll have to experiment more with splitting up.

I think the splitting of wookies is really strong. Have played a few games in the cantina where one 'sacrificial wookie' can go right to that terminal outside the bar and deny the command card.

Sure, he dies eventually, but it takes a ton of damage, and you don't really want to be out of that cantina brawl for long.

Splitting troopers for reinforce makes sense, but when your reinforcements come in and they're well out of the fight - doesn't that hurt you? With three figs, aren't you more likely to survive (and do damage) closer to the fight?

I don't think you need to hold the last figure way back on the other side of the board. Just put him a little bit further away...he's still very much within striking distance so he can attack when needed.
