Well that Iceburg sure did... Too Soon?

Never seen Avatar so you can't blame me for their dominance!
Enjoyed Avatar quite a bit.
But what was best about it was the gnashing of teeth by some types who like armies and are not too concerned with the environment.
I have always enjoyed Avatar (never loved it) as it a visually stunning movie.
The one thing that grinds me .. Unobtanium.
I thought, nothing in the future of the human race will ever be named with less imagination .. that is until I bought some Tefal non-stick saucepans made with 'resistium'.
Actually calling the substance Unobtainium is sticking with known science. It is a name given to any fantasy/non-existant substance as a placeholder until something real comes along. Maybe they should have just called it "levitonium" except places it in a one use box when it may have plenty of other interesting properties.
There is some thought that humans could build an elevator to space except the cable it would run on needs to be build from some kind of unobtainium.
Edited by T70 DriverIt would be good if it could beat Gone with the Wind its still number 1 when adjusted for inflation
Doesn't matter though, the movie industry is so obsessed with milestones, it's both sickening and hilarious at the same time.
Soon we'll have the movie with the biggest opening of a july 23rd, 12:45.
Any bets on who will beat episode 7? Maybe 9?
Yea, probably. Episode 8 will likely beat out Episode 7 too since there's a new generation of fans.

Well look at that ... I just got 'scienced'. Thank you sir. I had no idea. I just thought it was a really unimaginative name. It makes sense too. I heard unobtanium referenced in another movie (forget which) .. my mate and I were screaming at the TV in rage and disappointment "You couldn't have made up a different name!?"
My only issue with your point is that you mention it is for fantastic and non-existent materials. I get it. "Oh boy, if only we had [insert material here] we could .. ". We can replace the unknown material with 'unobtainium'. In Avatar, they had the material. They were mining it. Fella even quotes the price they sell it for. It is a known material with value. If it has value it has purpose .. otherwise there would be no value. So in Avatar, unobtainium should have been named differently.
Is there any science behind Tefal's 'resistium'? Wait, breaking news, my wife just informed me that only one of our saucepans was made of resistium. The set we bought boasted the saucepans being made of 'intensium'. Oh geez.

I disagree. I don't think the other movies will come close. They will be huge .. but they'll never top it.
You have to remember that EpVII comes off the back of the OT and the not so well received Prequels. There was the hype. For the fans, a lot of us went hoping for that real SW experience that the prequels didn't quite deliver. The youngsters were promised a grand space adventure.
Other marketing factors help build momentum for this film. Force Friday for example.
For the next 6 years we are going to be saturated with SW products. There will be a movie a year and it will become the norm to SW everywhere .. not an exciting adventure that some us have waited almost 40 years for.

The prequels were received quite well. Revenge of the Sith received by far the best reviews of any Star Wars film. The Phantom Menace was critically roughly as well received as other episodes, and the film was sustainably popular - audiences did not turn their backs on the movie after the first weekend.
Critically, the prequels did as good as the OT(or much better in the case of RotS) and they were box office hits - what more do you expect from a film that is 'well received'?
I read a book where they made a space elevator using carbon nanotubes made of buckyballs.
You are correct. My wording was not the best.
Whilst the prequels may have done well in ticket sales, it can be argued that they aren't as popular amongst established fans. Jake Lloyd quit acting because of the back lash. You see a lot of disinterest on the boards for the Prequels (I acknowledge there are also fans). I've yet to see anyone on these boards saying OT was rubbish and the prequels are where it's at.
Additionally, take a walk through any store at the moment. SW is everywhere! But with the exception of the odd Darth Maul product, there's not a whiff of prequel merch. Plenty of TFA and immeasurable OT though.
That was my point, many of us got excited for Prequels, but for many of is they don't hold up to our standards of what makes a good SW film.
Unobtainium
So unobtainable that they called it unobtainium even though they have obtained enough of the unobtainium to be obtained and are plowing the mystic jungle to obtain more of the unobtainable unobtainium. So really they should have called it:
ROPU!
Recently Obtained Previously Unobtainium

They may have it, whatever it is, be we really don't know what it is. Why make up a name for the unknown substance where there already is a perfectly usable name available for it.
I remember going to look it up after seeing the movie. Since that time I've also seen the term used in other places where it still works just as well.
It would be good if it could beat Gone with the Wind its still number 1 when adjusted for inflation
Yea ummmmmmm nothing ever will. Ever. Inflation adjusted, Gone with the Wind is sitting at 6.7B
And Avatar worldwide is still sitting at 3.1B inflation adjusted compared to ep7's 1.5B

According to Wikipedia, gone with the wind, adjusted for inflation, is at 3.44B, and considering TFA only just came out, hasn't opened in China, the largest movie market in the world, and is already approaching half that, I think it probably will top it.
Hmmmmm it get quite complicated computing an adjusted figure. The wiki also has a range for gone with the wind, somewhere between 3.3 to 3.8.... much better than my wrong 6.7. Maybe ep7 has the legs, but as long as it beats avatar (worldwide), i'll be quite happy.

Unobtanium could simply be a nickname for the material, like yellowcake, slimes, potash, LOX, fool's gold or light, sweet crude. It also tells the audience that this stuff is very valuable and worth expending several thousand tonnes of antimatter annually to bring back to Earth.
Like the Old Republic before it, those over grown blue smurff remnants of a past age have been swept away by The Force Awakens.
On this lovely Friday where we finally have broken Avatar's painful stranglehold on the box office thanks to the fans of The Force Awakens, let us always remember
Any bets on who will beat episode 7? Maybe 9?
JarJar Wars Episode I: Mesa Fight Bombad Robots
It's going to be the hot new spinoff series retelling everything from the perspective of everyone's favorite character.
It also features a Ferris Bueller's day off esc narration.
So glad we finally dethroned awfultar I hated that movie so much.

It's also a partial play on words of the placeholders themselves. Elements that we know fit into the periodic table but are so unstable as to not exist where we can observe them are given names like Ununseptium and Ununoctium.
They should have gone after Easytogetium. Maybe then a bunch of former marines wouldn't have been murdered by alien savages on some poisoned atmosphere planet.
I was rooting for the soldiers to triumph over those blue monsters and the species traitors when I saw it in theaters. I walked out of the 3d screening nauseated and annoyed.
Oh thank GOD.
"AVATAR" was complete dreck. I haaaated that movie. About **** time something beat it.
Come on Star Wars! Kick Titanic's ass! RULE AS KING! Even though I actually like Titanic!
You didn't like the message you received from the Department of Cultural Guilt? Good you really should feel ashamed of all the horrible stuff your demographic did back in the days before any of us were born. ![]()
I'll just put this here. Rated E for Everyone.
