A Casual Jake Farrell Jaunt

By hanssaunders, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Last night I played a casual game with a good friend of mine. He fielded 4 TIE/FOs (one with Wired and another with Weapons Guidance) and an Academy Pilot, and I flew Han (Nien Nunb, Kyle Katarn, Engine Upgrade, Millennium Falcon, and Elusiveness), Jake Farrell (Push the Limit, Wired, Chardaan Refit, A-Wing Test Pilot, Autothrusters), and a Prototype Pilot with Chardaan Refit.

I really fluffed it with Han, completely (but unintentionally) neglecting Elusiveness and the two crew. He got some good hits in, but at one point I was in the firing arc of four different TIEs and very nearly got wiped out. Near the end of the game, I was precariously close to the edge of the game space with Han, but managed to stay on with a hard right turn. Teeth gritting stuff.

The greatest part of the night, however, was flying Jake Farrell. He's insane. Every turn he would wind up behind someone and just eat them up. He ended the game without ever being touched. It was awesome. The Prototype Pilot also managed to get some great blocks in, and even a hit or two. A total blast. Five stars. Will fly again.

Anyone else flown Jake Farrell to great effect? Who does he pair well with? I am lacking a lot of the upgrades that make Han a real beast, and probably should have flown Lando (with that boost to other players at Range 1, which would have triggered Jake), but I couldn't resist!

Jake is one of my favorite pilots. He's like a mini-Soontir Fel in terms of maneuverability and action economy -- you might consider swapping Veteran Instincts for Wired to bump him to PS 9.

I've found that Jake tends to fly well with ships that are more obviously threatening because, unless he's packing proton rockets, opponents often ignore him and leave openings for those sweet R1 shots. He rounds out a three-ace list pretty well, and my favorite combination so far has been Jake, Horton Salm + TLT, and Poe or Wedge.

I've considered tossing him in with Poe, but I lack R2-D2 and Predator to make Poe more frightening (I often put PTL + BB-8 + Autothrusters on Poe). I thought about maybe flying him with Keyan and Esege, if possible, that could be fun.

Poe is still quite potent with PTL, BB-8, and Autothrusters. You're really slippery with pre-maneuver barrel roll/boost shenaningans, and being able to boost with Poe and still nab a focus token is one of the advantages the R2-D2 build doesn't have.

How do the folks you play with feel about proxying upgrade cards? It's not unreasonable to print a couple out and give them a try.

Oh, they'd be totally fine with it. I'm the only one who has an issue, funny enough!

Jake +title + vi + ptl + autot + prockets .. haven't tried him with wired yet, but yes he is absolutely a blast to fly ..

Ive been using Horton +tlt and Ello Asty with vi, autot and bb.8

Hmm no rd.d2 ... Hopefully you can get an original core set soon...

Or just proxy like mentioned .. I know, it doesn't 'feel' right, but my friend and I do it for when we dont have enough multiples of certain cards..

I have an extra R2 for trade.....

If you join the FB group for X-wing sell & swap I have a list of cards I need.

I fly a list I call Just Gotta Focus

Poe
VI, R5-P9, AT

Jake

Test Pilot, Refit, PtL, Daredevil, AT

Kyle Katarn

Moldy Crow, Calculation, BT, RecSpec

Using Daredevil seems interesting, how does that work for ya?

I love Jake. A wings are my favorite ship in general, and I actually plan on using Jake in a tournament this weekend with Veteran Instincts, Autothrusters, Push the Limit and Proton Rockets. He's the perfect procket carrier since he can get the focus AND boost into range 1.

I'm not quite sure I understand WIred on Jake though. You're going to be focusing pretty often, especially if you're taking two actions per turn, so re-rolling your eyeballs doesn't seem as useful if you can just spend your focus instead.

A wings are with out a doubt my favorite, with Jake being my favorite pilot in the game. There was a time when I hardly fly anything but A wings and I remember the first time I didn't fly one my opponent was shocked.

I like flying him with VI for PS 9, with Tycho equipped with wingman so that way they are not limited to green maneuvers after using PTL.

I plan on running this list this weekend.

A's (100)

Tycho Celchu (28) - A-Wing

Wired (1), Chardaan Refit (-2), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Push The Limit (3)

Jake Farrell (26) - A-Wing

Push The Limit (3), Chardaan Refit (-2), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Wired (1)

Green Squadron Pilot (23) - A-Wing

Predator (3), Chardaan Refit (-2), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Outmaneuver (3)

Thanks for this. I am looking forward to running the Ghost when we get it and plan on running it with A-Wings because I am a fan of Rebels.

I misread the squad builder and thought Green Squadron was only in the Rebel pack. Glad I went back and looked again.
