Runebound in Space

By David Spangler, in Runebound

Now I know this is thoroughly off-topic, but I'm not sure in the new forum where else to post this. It's essentially a wish that FFG would produce a science fiction version of Runebound, perhaps in the Twilight Imperium universe with heros and heroines from the different TI races.

I happen to think Runebound is one of the most enjoyable fantasy games around, and I love it. I love fantasy games generally. But I also am a huge science fiction fan and love sf board games. But there are way too few of the latter that deal with more than battles or conquest or 4X (like TI). There's nothing I'm familiar with that captures the wonder and excitement of questing in space, of first contact, of exploration, of space opera adventures between planets and on planets. Runebound manages to capture a lot of that feel in the fantasy genre; perhaps a Runebound like game of space adventuring, discovery, questing, and exploration could do that for the science fiction fan.

Anyone else share this thought, this wish? serio.gif

We discussed this in the previous RB forum, most thought it to be a great idea. The mechanics could be transferred quite easily into a sci-fi setting.

The magic phase could be replaced with a psyker phase or vehicle combat phase.

The terrain dice could have different elements, such as sewers for rivers, toxic dumps for swamps, ash wastes for plains, etc.

I for one would love to see RB set in the future. And so would the weasel, who loves the feeling of zero gravity when he leaps from trees.

[Official note: This is the first weasel reference in the new forums. More may follow...]

I think this could be a very good game, I would like to see it?

Sign me up for that idea. I love RB.

Also getting psyched up to play my first game of TI soon, which I expect to be friggin´ jawesome happy.gif

not quite "in space", but Runebound "with space" would be the idea i have been toying around with for a while of making a custom DOOM-Marine expansion, them being tossed into the world of RB by means of a dimensional portal or stuff and having to collect some counters from DOOMTBG across Terrinoth. Though I will probably never take the time to create one...

Give a marine a chainsaw and a boomstick, and he could be king of Terrinoth in no time...as long as the Deadites don't get him.

I've often thought about this myself. I think it would be very cool and the expansion opportunities would be immense. As another poster suggested, the Magic phase could be replaced with a Psionics or Tech phase. The Market Deck could be full of really cool stuff like Powered Armor, Plasma Rifles, Fusion Grenades, IR Goggles, Active Camo Belts, Stim Packs (to temporarily increase one attribute) and even wierd alien artifacts. Doing it in FFGs own Twilight Imperium world would be very cool too. Awsome idea! Lets not forget about the cool allies either! Robots and alien mercenaries come to mind. I would love to see vehicles or space ships included as well!

I thought of a concept like this, but I thought of it as a space map, with a spaceship instead of a character. Sort of like a Star Control II boardgame.

I would certainly pass on a sci-fi Runebound. I wouldn't want to play a game I already have, only set in a genre I dislike instead. That said, I think making a sci-fi spin-off of Runebound is a much better idea than putting sci-fi elements INTO Runebound.

I think a Sci-Fi adventure game would be a fresh break from the fantasy themed adventure games out there. There's no reason it has to have the "Runebound" name or mechanics, though. I think FFG has a knack for producing games like this that aren't Runebound. Personally, I'd rather have something "fresh" and not a Runebound rip-off in space. (You could call it SpaceBound, though...)
