Point Builds

By EricfromNJ, in X-Wing Squad Lists

OK, my son and I played our first game of X-Wing that I received for Christmas. We plan to enjoy many nights of this when I am not working.

What is a reasonable point build for us to have fun doing simple skirmishes with? I really want to just build sets for the 3 different factions so that we can each chose a side and blast the heck out of each other, but one x-wing and 2 T.I.E. fighters seem a little sparse.

Also, is there anything else I should be aware of when building these sets considering I don't plan to play competitively? Will it be OK to just throw together anything on any side point wise or are there ships I should avoid?

Where do I find the point value of various ships with their pilots anyway so I can build things?

Sorry, I am a miniatures newbie with a lot of questions.

Get both of the aces boxsets. That'll be two ships per side with decent upgrades. After that add a Firespray and the YT-1300. You'll have a pretty decent amount ships at that point to play with.

You can fool around with 'builds' using an online squad builder. The two most popular are:

Since you are just playing for fun, fly whatever. There's nothing you have to watch out for especially, but if anything becomes problematic, just don't use it (for example, just using the starter, Luke w/ R2D2 is nearly unkillable with only two TIE fighters). You can even 'proxy' cards that you see on a squadron builder, but that come with ships you are not interested in buying.

Have fun!

100 points is usually the standard points cost to build to. Most organised play takes place at 100 points because it's a good middle ground between too much and too little.

60 points is a decent points value for a small skirmish, but you won't get very many ships per side once you start loading them up with upgrades.

For a larger battle that takes a bit longer to play out, I'd recommend either 120 or 150 points depending on how ambitious you are feeling.

Ships I'd recommend are

Millennium falcon (for obvious reasons)

Firespray, Y-Wing, Z-95 (these 3 can be played as either their original faction or as Scum & Villainy, which gives you quite a bit of flexibility in your squad building)

Most Wanted (scum & villainy starter set).

Other than that, it's all good... I'd say just grab whichever ships take your fancy.

Thank you for the advice. I shall definitely look at the ships recommended.

Again, thank you. Now I just have to figure out how to beat my 10yo. (I am 0 for 2...)
