FFG would make money from selling the paint that they use.

I want to repaint but I want to use the correct paint colors, if FFG sold the paint that they use, they would make a ton of money.

Well, I know Citadel has a pretty spot-on match for the Hounds Tooth color. Used it for my Pup repaint. XV-88, I think it was.

If anyone else knows of more accurate colors, post away. I'd be interested in finding some more close matches.

I very much doubt they would make money on this, by the by, as they don't really have the distribution channels set up for it.

It would be kind of them to confirm the colours they're using, if said colours are commercially available, however.

Or just a fan-effort to identify best matches.

It WOULD be rather handy, actually...

Vallejo Stone Grey matches up with the T-65 X-Wing base color.

They are painted in China, right!?! So it would probably be illegal to sell the actual paints here due to lead and other toxic ingredients! Remember, they are not " toys" and dont have to conform to child safety concerns accordingly! LOL!

Maybe from Imperial Assault players or even a little from Armada but not from X-wing. X-wing comes pre-painted which means why buy more paint? Sure there is a demand but it pales in comparison or say something like Warmachines/Hordes, Imperial Assault would be the highest demand and since the popularity of IA is less than X-wing it doesn't seem that promising. The most popular miniatures series for FFG is X-wing.

However prepainted miniatures might be some of the reason for the rapid climb of X-wing across the table top gaming industry. The models are ready to play from the box making it easier to get in. So that factor alone will dismiss the notion of trying to sell paints.

For those that are concern about coloring if you take a ship from wave 3 like a HWK and compare it with a post launch release such as a HWK now you will find that the shading is slightly different. FFG doesn't have the standard paint products and likely orders their paint from a 3rd party. So you probably won't get a matching color unlike say another manufacture like CITIDALE or Testors if you had the exact same paint FFG uses. Those are dedicated paint manufacture and are designed to give the same color of paint regardless of batch until they do a full catalog switch (like what CITIDALE does sometimes).

10 out of 10 doctors don't recommend swallowing X-wing miniatures. It provides a choking hazard. :P

Now sure China doesn't have the same standards as other countries that is where US import and customs law come into effect and you can count all imports are subject to screening which could check for lead upon request of US Customs or other department if deemed necessary. Companies that manufacture offshore tend to ensure that they comply with import laws of the US least they risk getting their items on customs hold and shipped back. By then the off shore manufacture would have already been paid and the entire product line would be an expensive loss for the publisher.

Reaper has a webpage where you can upload an image and get an attempt at a paint matchup for their line.

An uploaded image might not be a perfect match, since lighting affects the results, but it's a starting place.

I've suspected that the base color of the miniatures isn't paint at all, but rather dyed plastic. Then certain colors are painted in certain sections and the whole thing gets a wash.

For example, I suspect that tie fighters and t-70 x-wings are made from grey plastic, x-wings are made from beige plastic, and foo fighters from black plastic.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Hmmm... I dunno. I think that there is a big enough pool of paint manufacturers out there, FFG would be way better off going through one of them to get a range. I think they would never consider the idea though. The whole idea is that you don't need to paint them, so anything above and beyond making ships and cards is probably not going to happen. There just isn't enough to the models from a kit builders perspective to support X-Wing as a "model" hobby. Sure some of us are merely collectors and painters, but we aren't the target audience, the gamers are. I say let FFG concentrate on keeping the game tight.

Besides, I have too many different brands of paint now anyways! The holy grail is a 200 colour Golden set. Once you have one of those bad boys, the $9 replacements don't seem so bad.

I know the A-wing is from a beigey one. Definitely different from their base color. Dunno about anything else, as I've not tried to strip anything else

I'm pretty sure the majority of plastic used is a pale beige type colour, almost white. It may vary depending on wave etc. However none of visible paint jobs appear to be simple washed plastic.

the paint is terrible quality imo. wouldn't be worth the pot it would come in

I do all my repaints with FOUNDRY paints.

They are from the manufacturer that made citadel paint in the 80s

They have over 200 colours/shades so finding a match is easy and its really decent pigment acrylic paint and the pots last for ever.

The way the foundry system works is they have a colour and then a highlight and shade for that colour.

off memory they have almost 200 colours so probably about 500+ shades

http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/paints/foundry-painting-system/

They have more colours than listed there BTW. I know i have some shades that are like '154 B' African Flesh Shade etc

I imagine the people FFG buys their paint from make a lot of money from the paint they sell.
