where will dorsal turret find its place?

By Ayleron, in X-Wing

Drey Renthal, Dorsal, R4B11. Proton torp, Extra munition, Guidance chip. 34 points

Torpedos cover your fore arc out to 3, with an almost guarenteed 4 hits (TL reroll, focus to crit, Guidance chip) and a reroll of defence dice.

Close in, Dorsal covers range 1 with 3 dice, rerolled, with defence rerolled, and can poke for 2 dice at range 2 to change Target Locks.

Downsides is that she maneuvers like a stresshog and is deathly afraid of console fires.

I've been playing with a Poe, Jake, Kyle list that really wants the point discount for dorsal turret. Without it I can't fit Moldy crow and rec spec.

kavil, push the limit, unhinged astromech, engine upgrade, and dorsal turret..... this guy is now called, "Come at me bro!"

Thats 35 points for one Y-wing, and all I have to do is stay at range 3. Although I have never fought a Y-wing with engine and unhinged so it could cover the ground and catch people off guard.

Unhinged Ys are fun to fly. Haven't tried with EU, as it gets costly. But the Kavil above could be a lot of fun.

Boosting Y-Wings. I love it. I thought the DT could be a keen substitution for the ICT in a cheapo Stresshog build, but I actually kinda love the ICT there.

I'm thinking the Dorsal Turret is going to be quite nasty when paired with the BTL-A4 title. That's 4 dice at range 2 and 6(!) at range 1 for a measly 21 points.

It won't. It isn't TLT.

TLT has killed any kind of variety you could hope for with turreted weapons.

I disagree. With munitions now fixed and useful, there is a market for a turret that can cover a torpedos blind spots- range 1 and out of arc. Autobladter turret is weak and easy for arcdodging to avoid- dorsal is stronger where you need it and zan threaten out furthur.

There is no indication that they actually fixed. People have been saying 'this will fix munitions and make them useful' from since wave 4. The cheapest munition and a dorsal turret is only one point less than tlt which is much more consistently effective.

Ion turrets aren't useless either. Ion hogs are still quite viable.

I think my Palob will like this little combo as he likes to hang around in the Range 1 - 2 band anyway for his ability. Couple that with a K4 security Droid and maybe Oppotunist?

Saying that, I could just stick with the Blaster Turret.

I've made two lists to try out.

4x Grey Squadron w/ Targeting Astro, Dorsal and BTL

or

4x Hired Gun w/ Aggromech, Dorsal and BTL

That's 50 dollars for a t-shirt!

I think it's already found a great place as a points-filler or space-rounder. No other Turret upgrade currently offers the same strength and cost as Dorsal, which isn't really designed to compete with ICT or TLT. A Y-Wing with Guidance Chip + Proton Torpedoes + Extra Munitions is a pretty solid build (I've been playing since Wave I and I kind of can't believe I just said that) but the relevant point is that you still have access to the Turret and Astromech slots. If you want to invest, you can make your Y-Wing stronger in both those places, and I think the smattering of cheap options in both slots provide some solid balance; I feel Dorsal Turret was a great addition to the Y-Wing repertoire.

That said, I haven't played with the Ghost yet and being able to accommodate a cheaper-than-TLT-but-more-ATK-than-ICT Turret for the title attack is pretty convincing too. TLT won't give you a pair of shots due to the wording of the Phantom title, and Autoblaster Turret is only going to be super good on Chopper with Zeb onboard. So, instead of the ICT default we've been kind of used to since the start of the dang game, Dorsal Turret is a solid option.

Oh right, Blaster Turret. That's where Dorsal Turret finds its place. It really is everything BT should've been to begin with (although I can appreciate the conservative design of BT back when the HWK came out).

I personally believe it is the best turret for a stresshog. I think you get many more shots at range 1-2 when the fire arch is locked.
