Trouble with Hutts

By GM Hooly, in Game Masters

Hi Fellow GMs,

I have a quandary that I'd love to hear your thoughts on. Here is the scenario:

I need a plot twist.
I have a two Hutts that were at odds with each other all the way through the Clone Wars which resulted in the first Hutt (Treska) sending a hit squad to kill the other (Belloq).
Treska is a Hutt who is seemingly independant of the major Hutt Clans. She is powerhouse of information brokers and has insulated herslef by owning secrets on everyone else. She is keen to land herself as a vigo with Black Sun, but has found ferself at odds with them.
Belloq was a Hutt of the same clan as Jabba, and Treska's immediate rival. He had the upper hand during the Clone Wars, destroying Treska's prized vessel, and leaving her to set up shop in an abandoned space station.
Treska has been seeking reveneg and over the last few years has maneuvered herself into a position of power in the Dominus Sector (where my campaign is based).
One of the PCs in my group is a Gank, and was one of Belloq's personal security.
When Treska sent a hit squad to attack Belloq, the PC was the only one to survive the assault which resulted in Belloq's death, and the death of the PCs Murder (yes a gang of Ganks is a murder).
He managed to make it back to the Clan Headquarters on Nal Hutta to report where he was imprisoned, and sentenced to be put to death as an example of what happens when you fail to protect a Hutt.
He escaped (and has been on the run ever since), but that is about to come back and bite him big time (thanks to his Collateral Accountability Obligation being rolled - with a double) and the hunters the Hutt Clan has sent are hot on his trail.
The thing is, that's what he's meant to think. In actual fact on this occasion, its Treska's people who have found out that he is still alive and have taken it upon themselves to capture him.
I'd like to play the memory wipe trope in so far as that at some point his memory was altered - an easy thing to do to a race which reveres cybernetics. During the session, I want him to have a flashback of what occurred during the battle, and to establish that what he recalls experiencing is not what he sees in the flashback.
I'm looking for what that altered memory might be.

Well if you want a major plot twist it could be he betrayed his former master belloq to death, after belloq had done something to him that severely tick him off and he had his memory of the betrayal erased.

Or he killed Belloq by being taken over by a combat slicer. And shwhoop you've got a new Nemesis.

Better yet Belloq is actually still alive he set up the whole thing to prepare to topple Jabba placing the blame on Treska who did sent a hit squad but the Gank PC is the only known survivor!

Now throw in someone else trying to claim that bounty but is actually working unknowingly for Belloq whose trying to eliminate the only person who could ruin his ruse!

Now we're reaching Metal Gear Solid Niveau of convoluted plots :D

If I had that plot going for one of my PCs? Hmmm, I'd make the false memory that Treska isn't even a Hutt. What or who he is can be anything.

If you want force and destiny tie in make it a Sith Lord in hiding from the rule of 2. Buying his time and orchestrating things behind the façade of being a Hutt. Hutts have dealt with Sith in the past.

For an edge feel, make him a double agent like Total Recall. Slicing his mind to forget his past was the only to fool the mastermind behind it all. Perhaps someone with foresight, always able to smell out spies.

Or worse. Ganks are to be the new breed of stormtroopers that the empire will be using in the future. His Murder was a test run and they failed. They need to know what happened and how it happened. And once they get the information they seek from the only survivor, no witnesses no evidence is to be left behind. Ala Jason Bourne.

Or his not even a Gank.... He really is a droid.

That's all I got off the top of my head. Hope it helps.

The memory flashback shows himself accepting a payment from Treska. He might take this to believe he was a no-good, lousy traitor.

The truth can be whatever you like, whatever fits your story.

This is what the facts are:

CHARACTER ASSUMPTION:

  • Kylar was working for Belloq the Hutt.
  • Kylar rose up through the ranks to join Belloq's personal security detail.
  • Kylar eventually rose to lead the security detail.
  • First mission was to act as bodyguards for Belloq is a private negotiation between Belloq and his nemesis, Treska the Hutt.
  • During the negotiation, Treska has triggered an ambush, resulting in her forces wiping out Belloq's retinue, and Belloq himself.
  • Kylar somehow managed to escape and made his way back to Nal Hutta to report what occurred.
  • Kylar's testimony was dismissed, and he was imprisoned.
  • Kylar learned that he was to be terminated by the Hutt's as an example to others who fail to protect their masters.
  • Kylar escaped and fled into the Outer Rim.

FACTS:

  • Kylar's memories have been altered.
  • Kylar's true employment is with Treska. He volunteered to become a deep spy for Treska with the sole purpose of destroying Belloq's organisation, and Belloq himself.
  • Treska wants the return of her asset and will go to lengths to learn his whereabouts - after all, Kylar is a big piece of evidence that shows her treachery against another powerful Hutt clan.
  • Belloq caught wind of Treska's plan and had Kylar arrested soon after he learned of the Kylar's treachery. After intense torture, the Gank relented and informed his captors of Treska's plans.
  • Belloq altered Kylar's memory so that he would act against Treska's demands and would protect him. Effectively, Belloq has created his own double agent.
  • When Treska triggered her ambush, Kylar did not change sides and protected Belloq, much to Treska's dismay. Kylar helped Belloq escape, and when they returned to Nal Hutta, Kylar was again "adjusted".
  • Before Belloq could present Kylar's testimony to the Hutt Clans to explain Treska's deceit, Kylar's mind snapped. Somehow an alternate version of events took hold, and Kylar believed that he was being blamed for the death of the Hutt.
  • Kylar fled into the Outer Rim to escape his certain doom.
  • Kylar is now sought by the two Hutt Clans, with Treska wanting him back so that she can remove the evidence of her deceit, and Belloq to prove Treska's deceit.

Thoughts?

For the record, Kylar is the Gank. You probably worked that out.

Nice very nice ;-)

Who did Treska and Belloq employ to alter the Gank's mind?

Was it the same person?

Would then explain why the plot was foiled if they're taking backhanders from both sides!

Now what if they modified the Gank's mind specifically to make their feud much worse... in fact what if another Hutt employed him to insure they remained at each other's throats?

and that's why Jabba runs things... cuz he's just that good.

Cue interested third party pulling the strings behind the screen, the occasional bit of information or help out of nowhere, and a new source of Obligation at the very end of the adventure...

Whew! Now I want to know how this plays out......
