Announcement: X-Wing Vassal League, Season Zero

By sozin, in X-Wing

You'll only play a guy in league once per round, but you can get in as many ELO games as you want. All League Games are ELO games, but not all ELO games are league games.

@phildo:

We're currently looking at Challonge, but Sozin and Mu0n are looking at further automation.

In yo. Looking forward to the opportunity to play outside the region.

So when the pods are done and we get paired up we message the player via reddit?

After Which we report through Elo.

How do we report winnings to whoever is organizing the league?

Seems like a lot of work

That's a good thought there, Krynn.

And I had a good suggestion, but it looks like on the Challenge Board ELO site, under "Match Activity" and "Recent Matches", it ONLY shows 50 recent matches. Per month we will WAY more matches than that. Other, I would have suggested that all match reporting be done on the X-Wing Vassal ELO ladder by requiring players to put a comment with something like "Reddit League Group X, score 100-20", then let the League Organizers just scroll through there. But alas, unless we have a way to view ALL the ELO matches, it seems to be a doomed idea.

@Sozin, @Earthworm, I assume you've already got a method, possibly on the Challonge League site? Email and/or reddit reporting seems harder for YOU guys to handle.

Have a thread

Pod 1 report matches for example

I never use reddit.

Don't find it as easy to navigate, but that may just be my simple brain

Or maybe message you directly through here, or post an email where we can get in touch?

Im just thinking of a way that may save some time and easier on those running this

Email maybe the best wouldn't it?

That way don't have to search through posts etx

We will not be running the league from here, for several reasons. Reddit will be our home for the immediate future.

I also find Reddit weird on my brain. I personally don't see Reddit as a long term home (or FFG) for the community -- but it'll do for now. I love the FFG forums for a lot of things but organizing a tournament ain't one of 'em.

Team Covenant is the natural spot, since they have nurtured the online community since it first began. Due to some technology reasons on their side , TC is not a good spot to host. The TC crew says that in January of this year they will finish the reboot of their community/collaboration infrastructure, and I'm crossing my fingers that it is awesome, because I really want to go back home.

I'll look into the challengeboard match reporting limitations.

While season 0 progresses I'll be building a little website that mashes up Challonge (our tournament manager) and ChallengeELO (our ratings manager). The ideal solution is one where you can submit your match results to it, and it will turn around and submit to Challonge and Challenge. I'm also looking into a list escrow solution whereby you can submit a list for your upcoming match, and it will stay invisible until your opponent submits his, at which point both lists will be revealed.

Cannot like this post enough.

Are you guys going to cap this out? EbongHawk talked me into it but I'm still setting stuff up.

No cap! We will support late-joins as well for season 0.

Lots of great ideas right there. Thanks Sozin

Ah, one thing: I could not find any dates, do you have some kind of schedule somewhere? With the TC open and the Brazilian Vassal championship coming up, I am a bit scared that I will not have time for everything. Having said that, if there are any dates (or plans) somewhere then maybe I can draft a rough schedule of possibilities here and so not get into trouble by having to quit - or not start. Thanks again!

Here's the rough schedule:

  • Registration ends Jan 10 (this Sunday)
  • We'll then take a few days to sort everyone
  • So estimated start will be a few days after that, ~ Jan 12th or 13th

Well, I've been meaning to give Vassal a try since last year. I figure now's a good time, count me in!

Don't forget to sign in over on reddit!

I live in China now, and the internet here can be... 'inconsistent' at times. I am interested in the league but I don't know if it will be problematic or not. How big of an inconvenience is dropping midway through season 0?

Our system can easily handle dropping in between the three rounds of season 0, if you let us know. Dropping mid-round is....less ideal.

Our hope is, that since you have 5 weeks to get your 5 games in for each round, whenever convenient for you, that you'll be able to schedule your games for periods most convenient to you (with best connectivity?).

I just saw your post today, and am very interested. If you open up more than 216 slots, let me know.

Make sure you sign up in all the places listed on Reddit. As we are about halfway through with this current set of round robin games (ending Feb. 14th), I'm sure they can bring in more people with the next round or to fill drops.

We are not actively placing alternates at this time, but are also evaluating how we'll include new players on the fly (one of our goals for the league is for it to be open to players to join as much as possible, so not confining signups to the beginning of seasons is a nice-to-have). We're not sure how we'll implement this quite yet, but we'll take your information and keep you posted.

Here's what you'll need to do:

1. Send an email to [email protected] with the following information:

  • Your reddit handle
  • Your time zone (or the time zone where it's evening when you prefer to play)
  • Your exact c hallengeboards.net ELO name (please sign up for the board if you don't have one, we'll have to verify this)
  • Your exact name on challonge.com (please sign up if you don't have one, we'll have to verify this)(please also register for Season Zero with that name- it'll get you on our notification list)

2. Hang around the league's Reddit sub . Check out our weekly newsletter and read through the information about the league and how it works.

3. Get familiar with Vassal, and play some games. After you're comfortable, try to play ELO-rated games to build some data for us. (Players with [ELO] in their Vassal handle, or their league Pod number, eg. [Pod 3] are all ELO players, and may agree to a rated game)

We'll notify you if we have a spot. Again, we're not sure when we'll be able to add you, or whether we'll have a facility in place to do so before Season 1 starts in March-April, but we'll have your data for whatever comes up, and you'll be definitely in for Season 1.
