Poe leads the way

By Jiron, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi fellow pilots,

I'm kinda new here at the forum and to the x-wing.My brother and I bought the new core set each and made some purchases from freinds and fellows. I already have some games under my belt but I would like to ask you for help to build a 3xT70 squadron I dream of. First of all, I tend to play straight-forward in every game I play. I don't like to follow numerous combos of abilities. So I got the idea. I will go with Poe Dameron with BB-8 (my two favourite characters from the movie), pumped up with abilities and two generic T70s to cover his ass.

This is the Idea

Poe Dameron

-BB-8

-PTL

-Weapons Guidence

-Integrated Astromech

2xRed Squadron Veteran

-Proton Torpedoes

Other version gives Poe Deadeye instead of PTL and adds Proton Torpedoes.

I would like to use the load of proton torpedoes to strike hard at the beginning of play. Thank you for your opinion.

Welcome to the game!

Unfortunately, proton torpedoes are not as awesome as they could be, at least by themselves. Generally speaking, to get good 'value' out of them, you have to spend a lot of points that arguably could be spent better elsewhere.

I think your Poe build is decent, but doesn't need Weapon Guidance. It kind of works against his ability, because he wants to keep his focus token as much as possible to help him on defense, but with a PS8, he shoots before a lot of enemies, and so in order to benefit from weapon guidance, he has to spend that precious focus token. Besides, with push the limit and BB-8, its quite frequent that Poe will have a target lock and focus token. So he can use the target lock to re-roll blanks (and with a focus token, that means 75% of the time they will come up as 'not another blank').

The red squad Vets are cool because they are one of the few generic pilots in the game that can equip an elite card. I would try to exploit this if possible, since many elite cards are quite strong. Predator is an obviously effective choice. Being able to re-roll attack die every time you shoot adds up to some solid extra damage over the course of a game. Overall you will find it much more useful than a proton torpedo. Even better though, is if you have enough points, you can use predator to enhance a proton torpedo, making it a much more effective shot.

Alternatively, you can get crack shot for only 1 point, which gives you one extra point of damage that cannot be stopped. Its not necessarily better than a proton torpedo (sometimes it can be though and sometimes not really), but its only 1 point compared to 4 points...

Another cool combo for x-wings is the targeting astromech + flechette torpedoes. They cost 4 points total (same as a proton torpedo), but give you a big jousting edge. When you k-turn or talon roll, quite often your opponent will be doing the same. But unlike you, he won't get a free target lock. Then you spend the target lock to fire your flechette torpedo and now your opponent has two stress tokens. Next turn, you move in close and take a focus or another target lock, but your opponent will not be able to take any actions at all, so will be particularly vulnerable. Its an excellent opportunity to blast him to space dust with all of your ships.

Example lists:

Poe w/ Push the limit, BB-8 & autothrusters = 38

2 red squad vets w/ crack shot, flechette torpedoes, targeting astro & integrated astro = 31 x 2

100

Or:

Poe w/ push the limit, BB-8 & integrated astro = 36

1 red squad vet w/ predator, proton torpedo, R2 astro (or R5) and integrated astro = 34

1 red squad vet w/ predator, R2 astro (or R5) and integrated astro = 30

100

Thanks for advice. Unfortunatelly, this looks like some upgrades which are difficult to find on Rebel ships. :-(
