Watch a Game in 20 Seconds!

By OccasionallyCorrect, in Star Wars: Armada

I love watching battle reports but I've always wanted to get a time lapse preview so I could watch a 90 or 120 minute game in a minute or less. Well I decided to do something about it and scooped up a time lapse app for my phone and gave it a shot!

Rebel Build

http://armadawarlords.hivelabs.solutions/view_list.php?token=5566

The goal with this build is to modify the MSU list by having the power of a medium and large ship, MC80 and AFB, while still having the flexibility with 3 small ships, 3 CR90As. The additional trick I'm pulling here is with the "Speedy MC80", basically giving it engine techs and using Tantive to feed the big guy tokens so he can always effectively move speed 3 with a click every distance marker. I don't like flying without squadrons but I wanted to give this a shot, there are a ton of deployment opportunities here.

Empire Build

I built this list as well and my brother was flying it. Here we have Motti buffing an ISDII, VSDII, and two Glad Is. The goal here is to have the speed and burst damage of the glads paired with the crippling forward firepower of both the ISD and VSD paired with gunnery teams.

I think this is the first time I've played a no squadron build, and definitely played no squads on either side. It was fun and a little quicker but I missed having squads out there for game play and IP purposes.

You can see I played my forward CR90s incredibly poorly, but managed to take out his most wanted ship and play a little keep away with my own. Rebs ended up winning on points. The speed 3 MC80 is pretty awesome.

Cool. I like this format for checking out ship mobility.

Agreed! That was the main reason I wanted to see this format, while I don't think it replaces the proper twitch stream at all I think it would be a solid addition for after the fact. My set up was pretty crappy so I don't have the whole board on there but I think I'll keep doing this even if it's just for me.

I really liked that...a great way to see how a game flowed. I would love to see this adopted as a standard!

Albeit with 2 minutes instead of 20 seconds...

Here you go! My app was taking shots every 15 seconds so I reexported it and set the time to 2 minutes.

Cheers, I followed the action quite nicely that time. Those poor corvettes

I have no idea why I didn't fly out to the right to maintain distance from Demolisher and his wing man. That was just a bloodbath.

i like 2mins better.

I'd recommend throwing all dice in a single designated area on the mat, like a small bin or something

I didn't know how this would work out, but next time for sure.

I really like this idea, because of the chess-like activations it's hard to do coherent turn overviews but I'd like to see more armada streamers utilising editing and post-production a little more.

Armada is a great game to spectate but it needs a few things to help it along I think:

- Ship shield, defense tokens and stat readouts during the game (impossible to see toekns sometimes during gameplay and when you don't know the stats it's hard as a spectator to value interactions)

- Ship "activation markers" to identify what has gone and what hasn't.

- Speed up the opening turns when everyone is just navigating
- Dice cam!

How did you place the phone (camera)?

I tied it to s light fixture above the table. It was hinky and tough to position, but it worked out well enough that I bought an octopus tripod to give me some better control.

well, actually just using text to sum up attacks results and turns on the side is much nicer. Maybe in post editing with "subtitles" or what not.

I dont have time for 75 minute videos.

But 3 minutes? I could do that.

the big problem with videos is people who DON'T want to waste their time with the inefficient medium of conveying basic information. Videos are good for every specific detail.

For 3 minute videos, I don't think we need to have a constant post-processing thing tell us what status of each ship is, but an after attack summary of the ships shields and damage/lost tokens would be nice.

eg.

demolisher rolls 6 hits and 5hits 1crit on defending ship ->

discards redirect, shields at 4/3/1/3 F/L/R/B. Takes one faceup from APT.

That was pretty cool. Would certainly watch more like it.

I think that would get very stale to watch, you're probably better off reading the batt-rep. Just displaying ship stats and letting the viewers SPECTATE with better game-knowledge available would be much better (edit: for the medium of video) I think.

Benny Hill would be proud. Ya did well man that was fantastic.

Mind you a more protracted game can be fun to view if both players are chatting about what decisions they see and what there choices are.

I think this format can co-exist and should just to give an overview of the action.

Just by way of example, why did the rebel player put the Corvettes on the inside of the Gladiators rather than the outside where they could increase or maintain range?

Now the answer could be a simple "oops I goofed and I won't do that again by choice." or "Well, I had a cunning plan to ........."

I was super excited to get in there and mix it up with this new build. It's an "oops I goofed" on my part, but I learned my lesson and won't make that mistake again :)

When I watched this I went back and thought of all the plinking those two could have done throughout the battle if I flew them out of that deadly glad range.
