Rules on Third Party Dice

By Luethar, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Is there a ruling on third party dice? In the rules it mentions third party items, templates, bases, ships, mats and cards, but does not mention dice in particular. I feel the list in the rules is not the finite list but is just an example of items. If that is the case then third party dice would be allowed. However, the rules do not specifically state anything about third party dice.

Can anyone provide "official" guidance on this topic please?

Thanks.

Lue.

The products listed (tokens, range rulers, and templates) are finite, not suggestions. Dice are part of the official game components, and only FFG dice are permitted in official tournament settings. There are dice that have been parts of various prizes at different tournaments over the years, and these too are legal.

Legal Products
Only official Star Wars: X-Wing™ Miniatures Game components
are legal for use in tournament play. Proxies of cards and ship models cannot
be used. Third-party tokens, range rulers, and movement templates may be
allowed at the head judge’s discretion. If the Star Wars™ Dice App is used,
the app must be displayed in full view of both players at all times.

If you're just playing casually though, so what most of us do any given day/night at our FLGS, then use whatever dice you want. If it's any kind of official FFG tournament (winter/summer tournaments, or store/regional/etc. ones) then only FFG dice are allowed.

As mentioned 3rd party dice are illegal in any kind of official play. You may complain about the quality of some FFG dice but I believe they have exclusive rights to their face designs and what's to say that your 3rd-party dice aren't "loaded" to favor you?

That said, if you think the dice aren't fair (and they probably aren't), you can use the official dice app. Of course, I don't know what random number generator that app uses, but at least there won't be manufacturing variations. :)
