Taking a force career and force sensitive exile possible?

By Brino, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Hello everyone,

I played some sort of force sensitive adventurer / explorer from Botha the last few month, but after buying an english copy of "Force and Desitiny" I would like to convert my charakter with all his xp into a Sentinel/Shadow (what more fits my slightly criminal Bothan).
But I really like the perks from the force senstive exile-tree. Now in the description of this specialisation it seems more like an untrained, almost intuitive force-user that is extremely afraid of being discovered, what does fit to the Sentinel/Shadow, even whey they seem quite stern and self-reliant. Would this fearful character-traits have an impact on my primary class selection? And is it even possible to use the Exile with the classes from "Force and Destiny"?

Thank you for your thoughts

From a rules point of view, there's no problem in taking it. You'll even lose some things, but if you like it, is up to you (I do think Exile is a good career).

From the fluff point of view, I don't see any problem in adapting some of the fluffs the Careers come with. In this case, for example, a Shadow who wants to dip deeper into Stealth and similar things would have no other Career (with FR) to go into, so you could take Exile and state that this is his/her path into a more profound knowledge of a facet of the Force that no other path would teach him. I don't really think Careers are "set in stone" fluffwise. Take Sharpshooter, for example, which gives the majority of its bonus to any kind of weapon, or Marauder, being the only brawl oriented Career. Both Careers obviously ask for you to adapt them and let you take Sharpshooter with a different fluff if you want to play any kind of weapon-kensai-ish, or take Marauder and adapt it to be any kind of brawler that is not a berserker (Shao-Lin Monk, for example :P).

I had some thoughts about this kind of situation, where in my frozen EOTE game, a Force Exile wanting to become a full fledged jedi type.

I think the best choice is to just buy the tree you want, which represent the exile learning the new path he is set on, in this case the Shadow.

Yep, there's no restriction on Force and Destiny characters that keeps them from purchasing Force Exile or Force Emergent. The one thing to bear in mind is that doing so won't give you a boost to your pre-existing Force Rating, as both specs only grant Force Rating of 1. You also don't gain any bonus career skills, which is a trade-off for the fact they're universal.

Personally, I see Emergent and Exile as great ways for a FaD character to continue mastering their Force abilities based upon their own introspection and experiences. I've got a Warrior/Shii-Cho Knight/Niman Disciple that upon finishing up with Niman will be going into Exile to pick up the bevy of very useful talents; I figure he'll have a high enough Wound and Strain threshold that the lack of Toughened or Grit talents in Exile won't be an issue, especially as he'll have plenty of ranks in Parry and Reflect by that point.

Morningfire is correct in pointing out the drawbacks regarding the Force Rating and lack of new Skills, this is the major downside. However, both those Trees are pretty good as far as a Force User Trees go especially the Exile Tree which has both a Force Rating boost and a Dedication. I'm not sure of the EXP maths but this could very well make up for the lack of new Career Skills.

Dunno about making up for the lack of innate career skills, but Exile and Emergent do offer some pretty solid talents; even the Uncanny Senses and Uncanny Reactions are useful since they make spotting danger and reacting fast to it a lot simpler. Was in one game where my PC had Willpower 3, Vigilance 1, and two ranks of Uncanny Reactions, and scored 9 successes (and one Triumph) on a Vigilance check. Needless to say, the PCs got the top initiative slot :D

If nothing else, the Insight talent is a great way to add Discipline to your list of career skills if you don't have it already. That by itself can be handy if you find yourself needing to resist enemy Force powers a lot, or just want to be able to stand up to other people's Coercion attempts.

Intense Focus, +1 Ranged and Melee Defense... adding or removing blue or black dice... I'm not gonna say they're the best trees, but they are very solid generalistic trees that can complement any stereotype you might have thought about for your PC.
