A Rebellion-related Hook in an EotE campaign, and a few other questions

By Ian2400, in Game Masters

Hello! I did a campaign awhile back which went fabulously, due in no small part to this community and advice I received here. Now that I've FINALLY finished my masters degree, I'm ramping back up and writing an even bigger and better produced campaign with my lovely new found free time. I've got one big 'chunk' of story that I'm having trouble coming up with something for, and a few other questions based on my long absence from releases.

Before I get to my questions, I want to give a shout out to progressions, who made an excellent bit of custom CSS for Obsidian Portal that I'm making great use of. Here's the new campaign so far: https://a-cure-for-injustice.obsidianportal.com/wikis/home-page

Ok, so here goes. One of my PCs is a Heavy, an ex-stormtrooper who fled the Empire after his brothers deserted for the rebellion after their father was killed. He knew things weren't going to go well for him without his father's support and with his brothers becoming enemies, so he decided to get the hell out of there. He's a bit of a 'I got mine, **** you' kind of player and that's the type of character he designed. This is Tova Dyson, and there is a much more thorough writeup for him on the wiki. In any case, I'd like a hook involving the rebellion and his brothers to come up at some point, and I'm at a loss for a good one. The 'hub' of the campaign is Nar Shaddaa, and by the time this plot hook goes off they will be actively working for Grakkus the Hutt. If anyone has ideas for something, I'd appreciate it. Some easy hooks to make him involve himself are straight blackmail (the empire is looking for all the Dyson brothers, after all), a promise of reward great enough, etc. Tova's obligation is Criminal, and motivation is Freedom (essentially to clear his obligation).

So that's that. I've got a ton of other good story stuff cooking up that I'd like to share once it is written up, but for now I have one big additional question: I've got every EotE book there is, but none of the AoR or FaD stuff. I like the grungy, everyone being fairly incompetent and sh*tty aspects of edge. However, it crossed my mind there may be interesting mechanics, gear, etc I could use that is in these books. Is there anything amazing I'm missing out on by skipping them?

That's all for now, though lord knows I might have more soon. Thanks!

I would have a rebel crew going after something they are too, and turns out that one of his brothers is on that same rebel crew.

From what I know, weapons are all nearly the same in the core books, though they all have slightly different starships. There are a few specializations that appear in both EotE and AoR. I also know that the Galaxy sections of the books feature different planetary write ups.

All in all, dont think you really need to buy the core book if you start having them run a few missions for the Rebellion, as even the Duty system isnt required to run those games

Oh bam that'll do it, that actually slots into another idea I was playing with for a different PC, and now I have a nice easy way to get everyone on the same boat.

Has his father been involved at any point during your campaign?

It strikes me he could arrange to recruit his help to try to mend fences with his brothers it really depends on why he would perhaps the family is being threatened and the father deliberat ly hires the help of his son's group as he thinks they're able to help him get his remaining family to safety as Compnor is threatening to reeducate the family and knowing he wouldn't survive is using this as his way of saying his farewell.

How would that player react if his PCs father sacrifices his life to protect his mother and the rest of the family?

Maybe a touch too much?

His father is dead, that's the reason his brothers deserted. Decided it just wasn't worth it anymore to work for an organization so terrible. Definitely not too much though, this is a very adult group. Our first session they willingly participated in the slave trade for profit. My friends have little in the way of morals in RPGs :D
