Wookieepedia Issues

By rgrove0172, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Anyone else have a hard time with the Wookieepedia pages? I think its a tremendous resource and browse it often but every time I load the page my computer chugs for ever, page freezes up and typically after a minute or so its non responsive. What gives?

Don't have this issue anywhere else on the net, or at least not generally. Something about that site just bogs me down! Really sucks in that I copy and paste a great deal of their info for my own hardcopy Star Wars GM resource. Trying to work on one of those pages is a nightmare, even clicking their own links is frustrating.

This is a problem I only have on computers with slow connections. The Wookieepedia-page has such a high load of ads-traffic that it really slows everything down to crash levels. Try never to use more than one window/tab or do anything you can to speed up the connection. If that doesn't work, I don't know what it is.

Im on a hard line, high speed connection and a new rig. ??? like I said, don't have issues elsewhere. Hmm... annoying.

Try with a different browser and/or put an adblock.

Yeah, the core problem with Wookieepedia is the sheer volume of ads they run.

Best suggestion is to install an adblocker plug-in for your browser of choice. Doing so helps tremendously .

I use ad blockers whenever possible, so the biggest problem I have with Wookieepedia is articles with absurd claims based on equally obscure sources.

I tend to find the whole site does too.

Even with ad-blocker the amount of work it has to do slows down my tab that I use for gaming.

As an example: got on Wookieepedia and AdBlock blocked 42 ads.

Yes I run Mozilla with the ad blocker on. No issues.

What adblocker do you use out of interest? (And Browser?)

Mozilla is the browser and comes with an ad blocker.

It does?

How do I turn it on?

Maybe it doesn't come with it. It's called AdBlock Plus. But it is on my Mozilla task bar on the right side.

It's an add-on for Mozilla. I've had it for a while. Went without it a few weeks ago and all of the various wikia.com sites have massive, obnoxious adds that slow it down like nobody's business.

Hey man, they gotta make money somehow to keep those pages funded and up and running, one way to do that is running ads.

I agree with this idea in principle, but when they pile on so many ads that it becomes a tangible obstacle to anyone visiting the site I can't help but feel they brought it on themselves.

Aye, I agree in both on principle.

While they need the revenue to keep the site running, when the number of Ads they DO run, reduces the speed of the site to the point it crashes my browser, its getting too much.

Often I have had to reboot my browser to get any response from the site when I am researching anything, and it becomes unusable.

If this is because they dont have any other means of financing the site, then perhaps they need to ask for donations (as Wikipedia does), or some other means of covering costs.

If an Ad Blocker works for me, I will use it, (Since I ignore ALL adds anyway).

You say "obscure." I say "nonexistent."

My buddy keeps telling me that so much info was removed from the wiki and not just pushed to Legends. Anyone else finding this issue?

Recently? I know they just went through a process to switch their pages from favoring Legends to favoring Canon, i.e. if you type "Luke Skywalker" and hit enter, you'll get the Canon info, requiring you to search for Luke Skywalker/Legends, and then I noticed for a little while after some links send you to odd sources, but I haven't been able to not find anything.

My issue with them is the snobbery. Any change, however so slight, must pass by the anointed gatekeepers. Screw those guys.

I'd agree if it were one or two ads, but man that page is unusable on my aging ipad. I don't see a Patreon campaign in their future so I don't really have a solution unfortunately.

If you use iOS 9.2 and an ad blocker, or maybe an older version of iOS with a web browser that incorporates their own ad blocker, then wookieepedia becomes more usable on an iPad.

Otherwise, yeah — it is getting pretty bad.

Welcome to the reality of any system that is open for anyone to change. Each of those people has volunteered their time to maintain parts of the system, so if they don't know you or your edits don't seem relevant or correct, then they'll deal with it how they want to. Pages have a "Talk" section for just this reason. You can make suggestions in the Talk, or discuss changes made.
