Long Range Scanners are not the munitions fix you are looking for..

By Sciencius, in X-Wing

You know, I'm kinda irritated that they released something to make ordnance better, and (at least a portion of) the player base has responded with "yay more turrets for meeeeeee!!!". I thought the whole point of the last few waves was to diversify the meta? Not reinforce turrets (again).

I've always thought this, but only recently articulated it in my head: Imperials adapt to the meta with how they fly, Rebels adapt with what they fly. I suppose this is a little more evidence in favor of that? I dunno, maybe.

it's not evidence of anything apart from the fact that empire has the bomber (and the punisher), and rebels do not

it's that simple, really. Empire ordnance carriers kick ass with ordnance; rebel ordnance carriers don't because they're too expensive and so they take turrets (or mines/bombs in the K's case)

We all know making a target lock action when you can't make an attack is a sub-par action. So I am not excited for LRS.

I don't get this at all. When you have low PS Tie Bombers, you want to be able to TL before someone gets into range. Then, when you know they are going to be in range, you Focus. This way, you get the TL and Focus for the round you fire your missiles. Take Homing Missiles with a Focus and you are doing a lot of damage on average.

People who keep saying that Soontir Fel and/or other arc dodgers are going to eat Tie Bombers with LRS for breakfast are not really thinking clearly. Arc Dodgers need to be close to actually dodge that arc. At this point, Bombers need to be within R3 to grab that TL...and then Soontir can dodge their arc b/c they are too close. If you are able to have that TL outside of R3...then Soontir has that one round where he is too far away to arc dodge, but in range for missiles. I mean, the Tie Bomber just needs to do a 1 forward or bank to ensure that Soontir is going to be in range. Soontir would have to be just outside of R3, do a 5 forward, and then boost. Even if he does that, if you have more than one Bomber, he can't do it to all of them (unless you flew in close formation).

Two shots from a Bomber with Homing Missiles and Focus will kill a Stealth Soontir.

Soontir can go from range 4 to range 1 in one turn if he is tricky about it. Some munitions will definitely tear him up, but not before he gets his shots off, and his good buddy Carnor Jax has something to say about focus tokens.

It could play out any way, but I'd rather have an ace, or some tricky bomb drops to deal with him.

If you spread out your ships then no Interceptor can boost close enough to be R1 of all of them. Well...unless you clustered your Bombers together (which I don't recommend).

I've been flying twin Defenders with Ions, for a while now. usually with a sigma or vader.

They do eat TLT's when you ion two and get in close. Plus Vader or Sigma help them get in close. And you can use the ion on those large ships, just shoot them once and they will stay away from the board edge. Letting you know where they are going and how to move to counter them. I have won many games because large ship players fly straight at the edge trying to chase me and they get ioned a second time an sail off the edge.

Now with the Tie/D and Tie/X7 titles, It's just gets much more fun!

Thanks to FFG for listening to me on them:

We all know making a target lock action when you can't make an attack is a sub-par action. So I am not excited for LRS. What is needed is the ability to switch targets at the start of the combat phase and then you will start to see more torpedo and missile weapons. ;However that would be such a strong ability they will need some negative detractors such as cannot make a primary weapon attack and gain 2 stress tokens in order to be balanced.

That ability already exists, it's called Thread Tracers.

Put it on something cheap and Swarm Tactics/Roark Garnet/Decoy it up to shoot first.

Jendon says hi too.

Jendon would be so much better if he wasn't limited to Range 1 and Major Rhymer would be awesome if they just removed that last phrase "to a limit of Range 1 - 3"

At the cost of firing their weapons at the new 'full power'.

Surely they thought of this, yet they did nothing about it.

I'm also kind of shocked that they're relating a bombers aces pack without extra munitions . C'mon, they had the space on the cardboard for the tokens...

Really I hadn't noticed. Very disapointing.
