Decimator rather than Gozanti

By Chief Thaal, in X-Wing

First: the Gozanti is a cool model and brings some useful cards for other Epic ships. Those are two solid reasons right there to add one to a collection. Being able to shield Tie Fighters from harm, or give them some longer range movement turn one, is something I can see myself using.

BUT, there is one ship which seems (to me) to be a better choice: The VT-49 Decimator.

So let us begin

Patrol Leader is 40 points

Gozanti is 40 points

Patrol Leader is Pilot Skill 3

Gozanti is Pilot Skill 2

Patrol Leader has a 3Dice Attack Turret

Gozanti needs to purchase a hardpoint weapon (minimum 5 points)

Both have 0 Agility

Patrol Leader is Hull 12 and Shields 4

Gozanti is Hull 9 and Shields 5

Finally, the Gozanti is Epic and I assume costs Epic points limiting the number of them. If I wanted an all, unmodified, Decimator Epic list I could take seven with 20 points to spare.

A Gozanti with Dual Laser Turret is only 1 point less than Admiral Chiraneau. The Admiral brings with him a Pilot Skill of 8 and, when at range 1-2, can change one [focus] dice result to a [critical] result. Not bad for 46 points without any upgrades.

But, what might make Admiral Chiraneau a little more deadly (against one ship) is Agent Callus. Like I said, the Gozanti still has plenty to offer. I know that Calculation is a better choice, but since Callus is Crew and Calculation is an Elite Pilot Talent, I can have both. Potentially deadly against enemy large and epic ships.

Those are my thoughts anyway.

I'm sure the Gozanti will be included in my collection. But I can see the Decimator getting more table time with me.

You can also give them longer range movement in turns 2 or 3.

PS concerns are irrelevant during combat, with EPT's like Decoy and Swarm Tactics floating around. Toss Decoy on Rexlar, Gozanti shoots first, strips shields, Rexlar fires last, focusing to crit.

For instance.

But a Gozanti is a very different beast than a Decimator, with different roles.

Patrol Leader is Pilot Skill 3

Gozanti is Pilot Skill 2

You are forgetting that epic ships move after small and large based ships, and shoot before them too

Oops

Did forget that

The Decimator can't regenerate shields or launch TIE fighters. The Gozanti seems to be loads of fun.

You also forgot that when the Gonzanti goes ramming speed it can kill things. That is pretty significant. I remember a picture of a GR-75 running over a full health Decimator being posted here some time ago. The Gonzanti can take 2 upgrades that allow additional movement (one epic imperial crew and one cargo) which makes it a lot more capable at running over ships. Then additionaly it gets the ability to slingshot TIEs, which I can't value, yet, but it seems pretty good.

... and shoot before them too

Really? The activation phase rules are big and obvious (and appear twice!) but I can't find the rule under Combat Phase that says they shoot first.

No, the huge ships do activate after all large and small based ships have activated, but during combat they activate in regular PS order.

A huge ship will just bat a large ship aside into its constituent atoms. Without breaking a sweat or a shield, if you roll right. Add Needa and asteroids do not concern you either.

Gotta love RAMMING SPEED! Lots of fun (unless you're the one being rammed).

The slingshot Ties, and the fact docked Ties can't be shot, are two reasons I like the Gozanti.

Keep in mind the Decimator will lose to the Gozanti in a game of chicken.

As a rule of thumb you can effectivly double the shields of any huge ship when comparing them, it's very unlikely that a huge ship will die before it can regen and it will probably get back most or all of it's shields.

Also huge ships have hands down better actions that large ships, repeatable evade anyone?

Gozanti over Decimator every time for me for the following reasons:

- Gozanti ram-kills things instantly.

- Gozanti has Reinforce action which allows an Evade for every attack that round.

- Gozanti can recover its shields.

- Gozanti can repair damage with the automated repair droid crew.

- Gozanti can take away enemy ship tokens with Suppressor title or with Tarkin crew.

- Gozanti can put two Stress tokens on a ship with Jamming action.

- Gozanti is not vulnerable to enemy Stress builds as it doesn't take Stress at all.

Watch my Gozanti run over a near full health Millennium Falcon in the video below:

Yeah, no contest for me. Gozanti all the way! If I could take it in normal 100 point tournaments I would! It is now my favourite X-Wing Miniatures ship!

It's not apples to apples. It's not even apples to oranges. It more like apples to house cat. There's no way to compare them because they are so different and have such vastly different roles.

Both are awesome ships, and well invested moy. 110 bucks the pair, they are large, impressive and cost to ratio efficient. But one only can be deployed in Epic, so they play in diferent leagues.

A good epic fleet would be a flight of 3 decimators, a gozanti carrier with 4 Tie interceptors ,and add the Raider as the flagship.

No argument there. That is nasty. Just like any Imperial fleet should be.

I would take a Gozanti over a Decimator every time (barring the fact that the Gozanti is restricted to Epic only, and rightly so, as I shall point out here.)

Gozanti turret weapon is effectively way more than range 3. It is allowed to measure range from any part of the ship. It is a secondary weapon (range bonuses do not apply.) It's primary arc is 120-degrees (limiting auto-thruster effectiveness and other out-of-arc upgrade cards).

Gozanti is much less likely to lose its action.

Gozanti crushes anything it hits, and it moves last.

Gozanti can recover shields with an inexpensive Shield Tech card.

Gozanti is extremely difficult to restrict on energy, unlike other Huge ships. It only has one gun, which is highly effective anyway, which costs 1 energy to fire. It's very difficult for a Gozanti to be unable to acquire 1 energy in movement phase.

Gozanti can carry Jammer (give an enemy ship at Range 1-2 two stress up to a max 2) as your action. Take that Push the Limit cards!

For 50 points, I think the Gozanti is a bargain with its cannon and a shield tech. Throw in Moff Jerjerrod and a saboteur or such (expendable crew) and it defensively AND offensively out-performs the Decimator, losing out only on the maneuver dial. But did I mention you crush enemy ships you hit during movement? Better make sure that Decimator is out of my way (which admittedly, is not difficult).

Now throw on some of the new TIE fighter pilots like Wampa and Scourge (and hey, throw Backstabber off the back end) and it's a helluva 100 point, 4-ship list. Highly competitive.

I love it, and I would love to play it in 100 point games.

Peace.

how many ties can the decimator hold and deploy per turn?

A good epic fleet would be a flight of 3 decimators, a gozanti carrier with 4 Tie interceptors ,and add the Raider as the flagship.

I would add another Gozanti and fill it with Interceptors or bombers! And possibly ditch one or two of the Decis to get a third Gozanti loaded with more Ties!

... and shoot before them too

:D

I'm building my first Epic Gozanti list, and I find myself asking "what will the Gozanti do once the TIEs have deployed?" The answer I've come up with is "Slicer Tools". Any ship that relies on PTL will be shut down hard. Any ship that K-Turns or Trolls will hate it.

And then my Raider will muder the rest.

The can also hand out actions to allies.

I find a Gozanti with a turret and automated protocols does well even after dumping the TIEs. You can hand out actions or take a target lock, while healing any lost shields every turn.

Just flew Epic yesterday with a Gozanti. It was fun. It did run head first into the GR75, so they both were hung up for a while. Meanwhile, my Raider was running over rebel ships and kinda-sorta one-shot Poe. Although, I maintain Poe is OP if it takes a Raider's Full Attack to take him down! (Nevermind those unmodified red die rolls that were terribly unfavorable.)

We were discussing how since we all have Gozantis (Gozantii?), our next match might have to just be a totally chaotic and confusing mess of Gozanti's and a gazillion TIES!

(I am having to resist buying more Bombers (I only have 1) for my Big G. Perhaps after Imp Vets arrives, it won't be quite so bad to pick up the last two....)

I love the Decimator in regular play, but I'm not real sold on it in Epic. Besides the risk of getting run over, it's a bullet magnet for the Huge guns, and it can get burned down fast, especially if there's a squad of say B-Wings intent on helping the Huge take down the VT. Although, I will have to try it again, now that I have my Raider build about where I want it, for Team Epic, there's room for a FatDecimator now....

I will say, the Raider is just so much fun to operate! Lots of guns, and as a primarily Imperial player, it was SO MUCH EVIL FUN to finally get to regen those shields and have the Rebel players go "Oh Crap!"

You do not *ever* want to take a Deci (and maybe the Ghost now) into an epic game. They positively melt under the vast number of lasers firing at them and are the favorite food of capital ships.
