Help building a Battlefoam PACK 720 Custom Load Out

By Stiggosaurus, in X-Wing

I've decided to treat myself to a real storage solution for my now fairly substantial (and still growing!) X-Wing collection. I've pretty much settled on the Battlefoam PACK 720 with custom foam, but I'm now a bit intimated by how I want to design these things. My goal is to two fold:

  • Accommodate my current collection, leaving room for future growth for multiple copies of ships I already have.
  • Have a plan for how I'm going to handle future waves.

With that being said, here's a brief overview of what I've got. I have at least one of every small and large ship (no huge ships yet), with multiples of the following:

  • A-Wing (2)
  • B-Wing (2)
  • X-Wing (3)
  • Z-95-Rebel (3)
  • TIE Interceptor (3)
  • TIE Fighter (8)
  • Kihraxz Fighter (2)
  • Z-95-Scum (2)

What other ships, both small and large, could I reasonably need multiples of? I already want at least one (or more) additional HWK-290, K-Wing, Y-Wing, X-Wing T-70, TIE Advanced, TIE Defender, TIE Fighter/FO TIE Phantom, TIE Punisher, and IG-2000. What else could I feasibly need multiple copies of? How many?

Here's my first attempt at 4 trays (Imperial Rebel, Scum, Large Ship): http://imgur.com/a/FBI8l

Lots of room left on the Imperial tray. Might move the Slave 1's here. Maybe add spots for more TIE Advanced and Phantoms? Rebel tray seems decent. Oddly, the custom tray creator doesn't have a cutout for the Z-95. Will these fit in an X-Wing slot? Might move the HWK-290s to the Scum tray and add spots for the Z-95s. Scum tray I added generic spots for the Z-95s, but may change those to X-Wings if they'll fit. Maybe move Slave 1s to Imperial tray and move one of the Houndstooth's here? Do I even realistically need two Houndstooths? Lastly, the Large Ship tray is flexible. I'd like to see two Falcons here as well, and could maybe swing this if I move one of the Hounds. Don't ever see myself flying to Deci's.

This still leaves me with two trays to play with. Maybe just generic rectangular spots?

Any thoughts/suggestions/tweaks would be appreciated!

Eh you need to decide for yourself how insane you plan to get :P

If you're undecided maybe you could get some generic rectanguar ones for now.

The customized form solution is best for those ships with really annoying shapes and dimensions that make them really hard to transport - All huge ships, YT-1300, Firespray-31, YV-666 and VT-49 all have annoying shapes and dimensions that make them hard to transport. These are your highest priority. Of the small ships, those with thin protruding parts are the ones you want special protection for (eg Z-95s, and both X-Wings). TIEs and other ships tend to be more robustly built - generic rectangles may suffice for them.

Keep in mind thickness you will need the YT-1300 for example is fairly thin and can share a try with X-wings, the Firespray-31 is of medium thickness and will work well with things like TIE Punishers, and Lambda shuttles, the huge ships, YV-666 and VT-49 require the thickest foam.

Ok just went tru your trays - check the thickness you will need for the K-Wings (I don't own that). you may want to swap the Falcon and K-Wing (they look rather tall visually).

Good luck with that. I went with the 432 standard X-Wing loadout and it has room for a vast amount of ships. Only problem is needing some scum and later waves. The key is going to be do you want to only carry ships in it or do you want bases and templates to go in it as well? Maybe people put cards in here too, but I didn't. I need to get a tournament solution that can handle all of that and then figure out my bases and pegs to pull them out of my foam so I can trade out a couple of layers. The good news is, once you get the pack, the individual layers are fairly inexpensive (though you get a discount buying a bundle).

If only ships, really look at what you want to put in it two years from now (even though some of it won't have cutouts available for a while) and buy accordingly. Measure twice and cut it once mentality is very useful here. It is easy to get a lot of TIE slots that won't work for all of your Imperial ships. Though, if you are like me, it is easy to collect TIEs.

If you are putting bases and templates in here, the one designated for general use is not bad, as it allows you to stack in a lot of small bases. Large bases do not fit well in anything I have that comes in the 432 X-Wing pack. You can stack them up in a single square, but I have more than will fit and the others are angled in other places. As the Huge and Large are similar sized, these can be problematic.

Overall, I have been exceptionally pleased with my purchase, just really think about what you are wanting to store...

My advice would be to get the 1520. I love mine and it will hold a lot but even now I'm thinking of the future and what I might have to leave at home. I just bought a 216 to take for tourneys. I don't go the custom foam route. It's more expensive and takes even longer to get my new ships into protective foam.

You've asked a question that you would think is easy to answer but really it's not. A few things I noticed from your layouts. T-65 x-wing's and T-70 x-wings are different shapes. You've got layouts for 8 x-wing's not sure if that's both or just the t-65. You have a total of 3 x-wing and 5 z-95. Regular x-sing and z-95 I think can use the shape as a standard x-wing do you have no room for growth for either of this ships. Not sure of the thickness of foam your using for scum but you have 2 spots for IG-2000. Those are very thin ships and could probably stack 2 in one spot and you would gain some space.

Maybe include two empty spots for each ship for growth. Or see how many ships of each type you can field at 100pts then add two empty spots for growth. Because I think is safe to say at this point we can expect VETERAN and ACES style pack from here on.

I was planning on going the custom battle foam layout at one point but I'm glad I didn't. It's a great product and all but my Plano cases do the job just fine and a ship has never broken using them. And they are much cheaper than custom battle foam.

You also sound like you'd be taking this to tournaments. This is a bad idea. Build your squad ahead of time and just take what you need. No need to transport your whole collection to a tournament when your using only using 1 - 8 ships in standard play.

Thanks guys, some good general advice and considerations. After way more time than I'd care to admit, here's what I think I've decided on. Note that the thickness of the tray is indicated in all of the images except the last tray, which is 1.5":

I'm really happy with the way this turned out, but I'd love one last sanity check before I pull the trigger. This allows for quite a few duplicates of the important ships from all factions, along with allowing for two of every large ship, minus the Decimator. The fifth tray will be used for bases, base cards, pegs, and maneuver dials for both small and large ships. The last tray is a "catch-all" tray (using the two sizes from the Plano boxes I've been using up until now, which have served me well) that I'll use for upcoming waves (including the impending Wave 8). My thought is that once I have enough ships from a new wave to fill a small custom tray, I'll order one two of those to slide in instead of the large miscellaneous tray. I like the Plano container I'm using for tokens, dice, markers, etc, so I'll probably pick up a smaller one that I'll put in the pocket of the 720.

Thoughts/comments/suggestions would be appreciated!

Very interesting! I was assuming that they are using a generic enough shape to accommodate both T-65 and T-70, as the X-Wings are listed in the builder as "Star Wars X-Wing (All Versions)". I'll need to get some clarification on this I suppose, because now that I'm thinking about it, the TIE/fo's aren't listed either.

I did find a few sources after I posted earlier that indicated that the Z-95s do fit in the X-Wing cut-outs, so those cutouts on the Rebel tray now represent T-65, T-70, and Z-95 ships.

I know this has been beaten to death here, but I'd still be curious to know what specifically you're using. I've been using the Plano containers up to this point, and I'm now up to almost 3 containers just for ships. Getting the Houndstooth and Imperial Shuttle over Christmas really put me over the edge because they are just too tall to make them workable in the 3700 containers. The only deeper Plano container I can find is the deep version of the 3700, but it either has no dividers at all or has three dividers that run the full length horizontally.

I dont want to hijack your thread so Ill create my own showing how i organize. It will be picture heavy and ill do my best to describe everything. if you have any questions feel free to ask. It might take me awhile so dont wait up for it.

As per the standard X-Wing and Z-95. I knew that z-95 fit into the X-wing spot. But I thought I read somewhere that the new T-70 was slightly different and didn't fit into the spot of a standard x-wing. I could be wrong but its worth checking. Maybe its a different foam company that has slightly different patterns that I'm thinking of.

I have all of my X-Wing ships in Battlefoam. I currently have 3 720's. All of my X-Wings (T-65, T-70) and Z-95s fit in the X-Wing cutout shape.

Having said the above, note that the "generic" X-Wing shape is a bit of a snug fit for both X-Wings. Specifically, it can be tricky to get them out without snapping the four foils.

I have learned to place them in just far enough so the foam covers them, but not down to the bottom of the foam. This makes it far easier to remove them without breaking anything.

Saw your other thread--very helpful! Thanks for doing that. Honestly, I still think I'm going to stick with a Battlefoam solution, but it's always good to see what others are doing.

Fantastic, thanks for that. Saves me a call to Battlefoam.

Does anyone stack their ships in the foam? I've reworked things again with the thought that if I go 2" foam all around, I can double or triple stack a lot of ships and save an entire piece of foam. I'm a little worried about them possibly rubbing together though if I do this. Has anyone had any issues doing this?

Here's my re-worked build out if I stack:

I've stacked my X-Wings and Z-95s.

It works but not as pretty. I just don't like now snug the standard cut out is. I kept waiting to break a wing gun. More than half will end up being in squares or rectangles. I can store far more than using the standard cut out.

I've not stacked mine, but I'll say that X-Wings that go to the bottom of a 2" are a pain to get out. Now I try to make sure I beat my nephews to the "putting them back in the box" segment of gameplay.

X-Wings I store with pegs to allow easy removal and I press back gently so the engines press into the foam and they are solid enough to allow sliding them to the bottom of the foam tray without damaging the wingtip cannons.

As for the auxiliary tray, I'd see about having space for templates, bases, base cards, stems etc. dials, dice, and obstacles can and it is my advice that they go in plastic bags or dice bags and places in the 720's side or front pockets since they can take up a lot of room, and it enables space for them. I have a separate token box that goes in the side pocket too.

The only ships I have chosen to stack are my Rebel Transports. This is due to the fact that the foam within which this cutout exists also has two cut outs for my two CR-90s and are 3" of foam.

When I order my Battlefoam, one of the special instructions I always include is for them to leave the cut out foam in place. I remove all of them, but I cut them down and use them as buffers.

So, in my example, I place one Rebel Transport in the bottom of the 3" foam, and then use it's cut out to create a thin foam barrier between that Transport, and the one that goes in above it.

Now, no rubbing, no breaking of anything, etc. They both fit, with the cut out foam between them (pared down of course) all within 3" of foam. Sweet.

In addition, since I also stored the X-Wings within this same foam tray that were included with the Rebel Transports, I used their foam cutouts, pared down, to allow the X-Wings to "sit" on the cutout, leaving them near the top of the 3" foam. Easy to get in and out that way.

I hope all of the above makes sense.

I use Battlefoam for all my X-Wing stuff. A few comments you may find useful. I don't collect Scum at all or huge ships, so can't comment on them, but if you want any other info, drop me a PM as I may miss replies in this thread.

Don't automatically use the generic shapes! You can fit a lot more in, particularly with Imperial ships, if you stand them up so that they're facing you. Most Imperial ships are 1.5" or less from front to back so you can just stand them up and fit more in. I would stack them (see below) but two on top of each other are more than 1.5" tall, unlike the Rebel ships. The only small Imperial ships I used the pre-defined shapes for were Defenders (since they face upwards anyway) and Phantoms (they were more than 1.5" tall if I remember rightly). TIE Bombers need a 1.5" x 2" rectangle. TIE Interceptors and Advanceds need a 1.5" x 1" rectangle. I used a 1.5" x 4.5" rectangle for TIE Fighters/TIE FOs, with up to five fitting in each (they touch of course but don't damage each other at all).

For Rebels, stacking is your friend. Stack the ships upside down so that you can use the clear peg holder as a grip to get the ship out from the bottom of the foam, as otherwise some of them can be a pain. You can definitely stack 2x ships in 1.5" foam for X-Wings, Z-95s, A-Wings, Y-Wings and E-Wings. Possibly 3x Y-Wings but I have never tried as I only own 2.

Unless they've changed the shapes since the T-70 came out, the T-70s do not fit at all in the X-Wing holes. The T-65s don't fit well either unless you slightly lengthen either the areas for the cannons or the area for the engines. You can probably enlarge the holes to fit T-70s too, but I haven't yet.

Most of the large ships fit in 1.5" foam too, but a couple don't, e.g. Lambda, so I ended up putting all my large ships in 2" foam and then used the rest mostly for dial storage. A 2" circular hole in 2" deep foam will hold (I think) 6x dials on top of each other with just enough space for fingers to be able to get them out.

I have a tray with just rectangle holes to store ship base plates, tokens etc. I have a separate tray with loads of tiny holes (I think it was for a miniature game that has lots of tiny tanks... it was a pre-done one) to store the tombstone numbers and target locks. 3" x 3.5" will store both sets of asteroids and both sets of debris (not the huge ship debris... I don't have those). 3.5" square hole will store the large ship stands. 2" x 4.5" will store a load of the small ship stands. I left other holes for movement templates, dice etc. too. Here are my custom ones:

You should be able to view my trays here:

http://smg.photobucket.com/user/velvet_presley/library/MsgBoards/X-Wing

Edit: When I created this, TIE Punishers and K-Wings didn't exist. So there are no holes for them. I managed to squeeze them in to some of the generic holes elsewhere. I did leave spaces for TIE Avengers and Assault Gunboats, which haven't been released yet :(

Just found this that I created when I was deciding what shapes and thicknesses to use:

Dials - 2 inch diameter. 1/3 inch thick
Large base - 3.5 inch x 3.5 inch
small base - 1.75 inch x 1.75 inch
Large base tokens 3 x 3.25 10 = 1 inch thick
Small base tokens 1.5 x 1.75 10 = 1 inch thick
D W H
TIE Bomber 1.5 1.75 1
TIE Defender 1.5 2 2
TIE Fighter 1.5 1.5 1.5
TIE Advanced 1.5 1.25 1
TIE Interceptor 1.5 1.25 1
TIE Phantom 1.5 1.25 1.5
A-Wing 1.5 1 0.5
B-Wing 1.5 2.5 1.75
E-Wing 1.75 1.5 0.75
Hwk 2.5 2 1
X-Wing 1.75 1.5 0.75
Y-Wing 2.5 1.5 0.5
Z-95 Headhunter 1.75 1.5 0.75

Unless they've changed the shapes since the T-70 came out, the T-70s do not fit at all in the X-Wing holes. The T-65s don't fit well either unless you slightly lengthen either the areas for the cannons or the area for the engines. You can probably enlarge the holes to fit T-70s too, but I haven't yet.

I have all of my X-Wings (T-65, T-70) and Z-95s stored in the generic X-Wing shape provided from Battlefoam. The fit is snug (mostly for the X-Wings). You do need to be careful to avoid damaging the 4 foils, but a little care and it isn't an issue.

If you are worried, a judicious use of an exacto knife and life is good.

Really appreciate all the input, it's been super helpful. I noticed on the checkout page that it warns that custom foam can take 6-8 weeks. That seems crazy to me. Here's the exact quote from the Terms and Conditions you agree to when ordering:

I understand production time for most orders is 2-3 weeks. Due to the sale, custom trays and custom bag orders require 6-8 weeks.

Does it really take that long to get custom foam? It mentions something about a sale--I wonder if that is a left-over they forgot to remove during a Black Friday sale?

On a different note, earlier this morning I came across the Game Plus bag and pluck foam over at Miniature Market. These foam trays are much smaller, but it's so much cheaper, it almost seems like it might make more sense to end up with a few smaller bags that I can just mix and match foam into and out of as needed. Not sure how I feel about the pluck foam though. Would be nice to be able to customize it myself, but I'm guessing the "dividers" that are formed will be weaker since it's made to be removed easily.

Does anyone have any experience or thoughts about the Game Plus bag and foam? Here's their website: http://gameplusproducts.com/

I have usually received all of my custom foam within 2-4 weeks. There are times, however, when it has taken 6-8 weeks. Specifically, they usually run a large sale around the 4th of July. I have ordered stuff from them for the past 2 years during this time frame and it has taken 6-8 weeks, especially if I order late in the sale.

YMMV.

I think mine took 6 weeks. That was December though if I remember rightly, so they were probably still processing Black Friday orders.

I have a P.A.C.K. 432 and so far I have room to spare for everything.

  • 8 x Z-95 Including Scum; TIE L/n; TIE Interceptors
  • 6 x Y-Wings including Scum
  • 4 x X-Wings; A-Wings; B-Wings; TIE Bombers
  • 3 x TIE Defenders; TIE Advanced; T-70; 3 x HWK
  • 2 x E-Wings; K-Wings; Lambda; Punisher; Phantom; StarViper; 2 x IG-88; 2 x each of other S&V that I don't recall
  • 1 x YT-1300; YT-2400; Hounds Tooth; Firespray; Transport; CR-90; Raider

That is at least 2 of every small and 2 of every large and huge except the Gozanti and TIE F/O. That's a ton of stuff and I still have plenty of room left over. Of course I need to redesign to fit 4 x TIE F/O but that still leaves a lot of room. Like above a long was NOT the ship design of Battle Foam and a lot of Imperial will stand end up to make it easier. I double checked a most Rebel stuff is double stacked and the X-Wings are in a square stacked.

Now my biggest decision is do I just to a larger P.A.C.K. or just get another 420 that holds a ton of stuff if you custom design you own compartments.

What is everyone's opinion? Two 420s or just one 720 or something else?
