K-Wing Test Flights

By Chief Thaal, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Ordered two K-Wings on 1st January 2016

Same day I registered on this forum

Can't wait to get them and start testing them out. I'll post the results of my battles here.

My first game will be an unmodified Warden Squadron Pilot against two Academy Ties. Just so I can become acquainted with how it flys. I'll gradually start arming and upgrading the K-Wing until I become a deadly slamming bombardier.

Good luck, I don't have one, but they are annoying to face.

Very keen to see how you go with them. I haven't sunk my teeth into them as yet but I can certainly see the appeal of them. I'll be following your journey. :) Good luck!

I got a "dispatched" email today. My ships are inbound! Not long to wait now :)

My K-Wings have arrived!

However I'm jumping straight into flying both as Guardians, and giving them Twin Laser Turrets and Recon Specialists. Total points 64.

Not got a day to play yet. But soon.

Good to know. Perhaps look at Tactician as a crew upgrade as well as I believe they can deal out two stress tokens with each attack? That's not very pleasant to be on the end of. What's in the rest of the squad out of interest?

For now it's just the Ks. Odd points I agree, but I like to try out my new ships before making a squad. I've seen a lot of TLT Tactician praise so will definitely be trying that out too. I'll also try gearing them up with ordnance. I'm keen to try an Advanced Slam Bombardier, but I have been known to misjudge distance and fly off the board so better be careful.

My approach has always been "buy what you like the look of then work out how to make it work".

Once I've worked out how to fly my two Ks, I'll be getting more to make up a squad of them.

You only need to buy one more at most for 100pt squad.

Aaron Bonar's "Danger Zone!" list is fun to bring to a tournament once you are comfortable flying them. Most opponents will cringe when they see the list opposite them.

There are three kinds of methods opponents will use against them:

(1) Avoid range 2 possibilities in there arc at all cost. This helps you because as soon as you notice your opponent is doing everything they can to avoid tactician you have them playing your game instead of theirs.

(2) Not worry about tactician at all. When one one does this I can often choke them with 8 stress in 2 turns. Some will even do it with aces that rely on action economy. BAD mistake.

(3) The 1%... these are the players you fear. They are the elite and have a plan for list that will work well if executed. These are generally the only players that can beat this list reliably. The only other players from the first two that you will lose to are the matches in which you made a mistake or either your attack dice were extremely cold or their 3 agility defense rolls were really hot.

The K-Wings lost!

Against a Tie Swarm of six Academy Pilots.

In return, the K-Wings destroyed one Tie and caused one point of damage to two others.

Between turns 1-3 the Ties all closed in and fired upon one K-Wing until it was destroyed. In turn 4 they had to untangle themselves since they were bunched up. Then in turns 5 and 6 they manoeuvred so that two of the surviving five could shoot at close range.

Ouch!

Scared of K-Wings?

Range 1 to make the Twin Laser Turret useless, and giving you an extra attack die. Also, concentrate as much shooting on one target.

Twin Laser Turret

I could of used my TLT on a couple of occasions but was too busy trying to get the closer Ties. Excellent tactic and I'll know next time not to repeat that mistake.

Recon Specialist

Didn't really do much, but didn't get a chance with the TLT much.

I'm going to try again. Then try Tactician instead of Recon Specialist. Personally, I might use the Dorsal Turret once I've the Ghost expansion. But for now I'll keep up my efforts with the TLT.

Dorsal Turret gains you nothing over the K-Wing's primary.

K-Wing Primary is attack 2

Dorsal Turret is attack 3. Not much, but it's half the cost of TLT and is range 1-3 compared to TLT 2-3. If I got a point blank range shooting match with Dorsal Turret I'd be rolling 4 dice.

But

There are plenty of options, and I haven't even started with the ordnance yet. I might stick with the primary and spend points on bombs, torpedoes and/or missiles. I'm keen to try a "bombardier slamming" with a Conner Net. If I did that today, I'd of hit four Ties.

Dorsal Turret is attack 3.

Oh, if only it were. It's 2.

Oh :(

I'm changing squadron builder

Thanks for pointing that out.

When flying Kwings vs tie swarm... Get as many asteroids close together as you can and set up so that you can slow roll the Kwings and force the swarm through the rocks to get to you. Asteroids get a swarm to break formation and a swarm is no longer a swarm when they are not all facing the same way in a tight formation

Since academies move before you, make sure that you never allow them to block your maneuvers. If your maneuvers are blocked, you're not getting actions. If a Kwing has no action it can not slam. SLAM is your friend when facing swarms. Better to avoid 4 of the 6 arcs and lose your shot with the Kwings than to face 3 or more ties in arc just to get your own shot off. Kwings are all about patience, especially with too many firing arcs that you can simply dodge with a slam.

Every time you are putting a maneuver dial down with a kwing, ask yourself, "can my ship be blocked" and "if this swarm moves in, what slam options do I have to avoid arcs."

2 Ks, eh?

K with tactician are scary solid that keep higher PS aces from easily engaging you

far scarier still, though, is the TLT K with seismic charges. You have to chase it, but you just don't want to, cause this happens:

note sly miranda's wing just barely peeking into the photo

Miranda is the K to take if you want a combat ship. TLTs and c3po make her crazy durable, SLAM keeps her surprisingly maneuverable (and trolly, your poor opponent will hate her!), and a pair of seismics on her give the list some great tech against aces and Tie swarms alike

Wardens make good tactician + TLT platforms, and when Sabine hits they'll make crazy Action bomb users with Advanced Slam
