Imperial think outside the Box 888 squadron.

By ForceM, in X-Wing Squad Lists

My intention was to give new vigor to the Phantom that seems to have been completely forgotten. But i think that with the right upgrades it still can pull its weight quite well...

These are all imperial aces where you would not think that they can perform well (well except the inquisitor where we are not so sure yet...)

It could do quite well vs TLTs. Against Palpmobile it gets a bit complicated, but you can pressure one of the aces with Kallus on your Phantom. He would also serve you very well against Lists with one ace, like Heavers worlds list. Okay Stress Y-Wing would e a gigantic problem for the Phantom but i think it's manageable!

I like it. I don't think its unusual or 'out of the box' though, since those all look pretty standard. Juke + Comm relay is to Omega Leader like Push the limit + autothrusters is to Soontir.

Now that we've seen the dial, I have no doubt that a PTL inquisitor will be good. So, like Soonts, PTL + autos will be pretty bog standard on him.

Kallus is new, but seems made specifically for Echo. Since he lacks Whisper's action economy, its a great choice as crew on him, and I expect to see it become pretty common relatively speaking (since Echo is FAR from common!). SJ is certainly not the 'standard' system choice though, but I've used it many times and its totally worth it. It does result in a drop in Echo's firepower though, but hopefully Kallus will make up for that (against one enemy, at least...)

Anyway, looks fun!

Thanks for your opinion! It is appreciated!

I rather thought of it as a different take at an imperial ace squadron because i have not seen a lot of Omega Leader except when i have played it myself.

Echo has fallen somewhat out of grace after the nerf, but the added flexibility of his decloak makes him the better elite Phantom now in my book. So the choice of the ships is what i meant with "outside the box". I still mostly see Soontir, Vader or Carnor when it cones to imperial aces, that's why.

I added the Inquisitor for good measure because he is a new element and seems pretty powerful too!

The Sensor jammer is totally worth it on the Phantom in my opinion since TLT came out. Yes you will probably do less damage but without it your 4 dice defense may well totally fail you and Echo goes down fast. SJ prevents that in most cases from happening. While Kallus is excellent against 2-3 ship ace lists or single aces with support.

While I do like it, it would definitely be a tough list to fly with little to no room for error

Anything imperial and especially Phantoms I tend to lean towards, but sadly I never use Phantom anymore just because to many things out there can deal with them

Echo took a big hit with the nerf imo. She already had a difficult time against fel and other ps9 ships, and I still see the same issues plague her even in a list like this.

Which is why whisper just becomes to go to.

She can shoot and recloak. In echo case that isn't always the case, and kallus isn't going to help her that much imo.

She only has 2 dice if fel,Han,Wedge, talabane cobras, whisper, vet Coran is shooting at her.

Sensor jammer become very situational depending on the squad she is up against

Great against tlt, but again not so great against ace lists

I have always preferred Whisper to Echo, but after the nerf i have to say that i do prefer Echo because of the increased mobility. You can dodge more shots with Echo than with Whisper if done right. The recloak at PS8 has always been worse than at 9, but then you pretty much see Vader and Fel only at PS9. VI Corran is pretty rare, VI Poe is a little more frequent only. Talonbale can be outmaneuvered even at PS 9 as can Wedge. Han has always been the counter to Phantoms, so nothing new here.

You go a very defensive build on Echo for this very reason. The times are harsh for Phantoms and you need to stay alive as long as possible. If they have to focus to achieve anything, they will be more vulnerable to your other ships. This is especially a good combo with Omega Leader and Juke?(if he has no TL anyway). If they focus in order to defend against Omega leader, they cause one less hit vs Echo!

A good option would be to give juke to the inquisitor as well perhaps, or to just swap him for Carnor Jax. While he is at R1 they cant do a whole lot against Sensor jammer nor Juke!

So while i would love to put an FCS on her, i really think that nowadays you can't afford to do so. Kallus is of course especially good against elite ships. I have tried him and i can tell you that one more hit and one more evade against 1/3 or 1/2 of enemy lists IS powerful! And ace lists are what you fear most with Echo after all!

Otherwise, with 12 hp it will of course be difficult to fly. But then Palpmobile relies on 8 HP to do the Job and 10 more to buff then, so this is not a lot worse XD!

Personally speaking I'd much rather take Recon Specialist for Echo, over Kallus.

It is 1pt more but it lets you sit on those 2-4 green dice with double focus - a lot more.

Kallus is better against few ships because he can really make life difficult for one expensive piece to hurt you and not to get hurt. Against Swarms the danger of getting blocked is real, and here Kallus does almost nothing but Recon spec does nothing at all!

In my experience he is worth it over a recon spec at the moment.

I have played the list with Carnor instead of the Inquisitor (until he's out) for now. This adds a beneficial element however because he also prevents focus against Sensor Jammers as well as against Omega Leader's juke when he has no TL on the target yet!
