Is the original starter still worth having?

By Red 7, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I just got an original core set for Christmas, and was thinking of getting another in order to get more models as economically as possible.

I am wondering if this is a bad idea given that the force awakens core set is now out.

Is the force awakens making the original core set/rules etc... obsolete?

It may or may not be a bad idea. The issue with the new Core is it uses more expensive ships. I can't speak for the Imperials as I started out Rebel (and have stuck with that for the most part).

From the Rebel side, I can say if you had 4 naked T-70 Blue Squadron Novices, you would only have 4 points left over to spend with. That isn't much to work with.

The old X-Wings are much cheaper, and have better Pilot Cards. The old Core in particular, has Biggs Darklighter and Luke Skywalker. Luke is perhaps the tankiest X-Wing. Biggs has that sweet taunt.

Granted the old X-Wings are under powered somewhat. I think that can be fixed at a later time to make them more viable. I already came up with a lot of ideas to fix them but, the community isn't helping me at this time. If you want to see the FFG post I made regarding that feel free to view it here

On the other side of the coin, the new Core is nice to have if you plan on using mobility Rebel builds. I know I have seen a few of these mobility builds using BB-8. BB-8 is part of the new Core set.

I guess to sum it up, it just depends on which build you are trying to do

The old starter includes pilots for both ships that are not currently available anywhere else. It is also a good deal if you just want another x-wing and 2 tie fighters. It is also the only source for the R2-D2 and R2-F2 astromechs. It also has so e unique missions and tokens, but they are mostly introductory and not particularly important I think. I don't think there is anything else in it that can't be obtained in other expansions.

I think that the old core set is a must. Luke, Wedge, Biggs, Howlrunner...

And the most important, it is a starter set that put you in the cockpit of the two iconic ships that started it all.

Wedge and Howlrunner are both in their respective ship's expansion pack, NOT the old starter set.

If you already have one original core, getting a second is only worth it to get cheaper models than you'd get buying them separately, but if you buy other individual models you get different pilots (see below). Also, a lot of the good stuff in the original core is unique (R2, Luke) so having multiples really doesn't help much unless you're setting up for both sides. As someone who has 2 original cores and 2 TFA cores, I really think that you only need one of each and, again, buy more core sets because $25-30 for 3 ships is a good deal.

Wedge is in the solo X-Wing expansion not the core and Howlrunner is in the TIE expansion, no?

Sorry, you are right. But Luke and R2 plus asteroids, dice, etc, are worth buying it.

Tie ln are superior to the fo and miniswarm for alot less points.

T65 are cheaper but the difference between them and the t70 is much smaller.

Two original cores is a good deal for imp players but not if your going rebel.

1 of both is a must. They both have unique stuff.

Thank you for all of the great responses.

I was looking at getting a second original core set in order to build my model count more cost effectively.

It is good to see that the set and models are still valid with the release of the force awakens core set.

I'd say it's worth having for some of the upgrades, an extra set of dice and templates (cut the range ruler up to have range 1 and range 2 checkers), and a couple of pilots. It's probably my next investment along with Rebel Aces.

I have seen the original core sets start to go on sale. You could pick up one easier for a better price point per ship as well.

If you are expanding your initial collection, sale price items that offer bulk ships are going to become increasingly rare so I would start there.

So I went ahead and bought another Original Core set for $24!!!

I am happy that I now have lots of dice, markers, and more importantly... twice as many ships on both the Imperial and Rebel sides :D

That's something that I didn't really think about. Is the original core set getting the price cut at LGS's due to it being at least partially obsolete?

This sale was at Chapters only.

I contacted my LGS to see if they could match the price so that I could support smaller business, but they couldn't. They continue to charge full price $52

I have a birthday coming up, so perhaps I can ask for a Force Awakens Core set.

I will of course have to paint the T70 to fit in with Red Squadron

Sorry but how did this get Off Topic? This is perfectly acceptable in the main X-wing forums.

I was considering doing a 'use the forum wisely new players' post in general, explaining the best places to put things but whats the point, it would be lost in a day as nothing gets stickied and everyone would just ignore it anyway :)

I didn't think that it was off topic... Or are you referring to where it is posred?

I was asking about the relevance of the original core set since the release of the force awakens, the question was answered, and I have said that I may also get the newer core set.

I must admit that the forum is a little confusing in regards to where topic/threads belong and should be posted, but it sounds as though that is an ongoing issue

Yeah the technicalities can be confusing. For example all the TFA movie posts which is really more about the movie and not about the game X-wing miniatures should be in the off topic. But since General Star Wars topics are common especially in a community that is a derivative of the Star Wars fan base, so I can understand why these topics end up in the general forum board and it doesn't bother me.

But this was about actual X-wing miniature products, I'd figure the general board would be the best place to get the answer for this questions even if it is a newbie post. Now I understand what Gadge had said and that the general X-wing forum is one of the most popular forum boards on FFG's website and threads could easily get buried after a day or two on popular forums. But I don't think this forum is that active. I could be wrong X-wing is gaining a lot of popularity. ;)

You can Always try browbeating your LGS for a discount on the original if they have both the old and the new core set. ;)
