Large Ship Scoring and MoV

By TrooperTK422, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Reading over the new tournament rules it seems like FFG has decided to change the way half points for large ships works. The "End of Match" section used to say:

"When calculating a score, each player receives half the total squad point value (rounded down) of each enemy large ship whose combined total hull and shields, including any Hull Upgrades or Shield Upgrades, have been reduced to half or below."

It now reads:

"When calculating Margin of Victory (see “Margin of Victory” below), each player receives half the total squad point value (rounded down) of each enemy large ship whose combined total hull and shields, including any Hull Upgrades or Shield Upgrades, have been reduced to half or below."

If I'm understanding this correctly that means that your "score" does not necessarily equal your MoV for the match.

Here's an example. Player-A is flying Han Solo (55 points) and Corran Horn (35 points) against Player-B who is flying Vader (35 points), Fel (35 points) and an Omicron Group Pilot with Palpatine (29 points). Their match goes to time, and at the end of the game Corran, Fel and the OGP are all dead, while Han is at 1 hull remaining. Player-A "scores" 64 points for destroying Fel and the OGP. Player-B "scores" 35 points for destroying Corran Horn. Player A wins the match. However, the MoV for that round would be Player-A 129 and Player-B 98.

Is this correct?

Edit: oops, I didn't see that there was already a thread on this topic (with a better example), sorry!

We are waiting on something from FFG on this.

Somebody said that it was not the intent of FFG to change this rule, based on some Facebook post, but until we get an official response, we have to follow what they wrote. TOs may need to address how it will be done until FFG clarifies.

I and others also have sent emails to request clarification.

Calculating MoV with the current wording is kinda tricky.

We are instructed to add the amount by which the winners score exceed the losers score.

So lets say you won a match with Brobots killing a Z-95 Bandit barely scoring you 12 points, while one of the bots is brought to half hull.

You get a full win, but the squad point difference is a negative number due to the rules change.

Which means your squad point value does not exceed your opponents so you adds nothing and the opponent subtracts nothing when calculating MoV.

So unless they change the wording from "exceed" to "the difference between the winners and the losers squad value difference", to allow for negatives, the minimum MoV for the winner will always be 100.

I have no problem with the notion of something exceeding something else by a negative number, so at tournaments I judge I won't be implementing a floor to the victor's MoV based on the use of that word. Hopefully in the next revision of that section FFG will either make it clear that we're supposed to do half points for large ships in both cases, or provide an example from the case where the victor's MoV points are less than the loser's, just to clear up the semantics.

I agree with you that it makes more sense to calculate the difference in the squad value in order to estimate MoV, but this is not how the text is worded.

So if someone was to follow the exact wording on the current MoV rules, there is a minimum MoV of 100 for the winner.
