Cluster/TLT vs Valen Rudor query.

By DraconPyrothayan, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Valen Rudor performs a free action after defending.

Valen Rudor has Boost and Barrel-Roll.

Ships defend against Cluster Missiles and TLTs twice.

Is it possible for Rudor to Boost or Barrel-Roll out of range of the second Cluster Missile attack due to having defended against the first?

Does this cause the second attack to fizzle as though the target had been destroyed?

I'd say no, because you skip the Declare Defender step with the second attack, and at that point you no longer need to check range.

I'd assume yes, so another thing that needs clarifying. Hopefully there will be something in the set rules.

Still, it'll definitely work for BTLA4, TIE/D, and the Ghost...

Yeah, intuitively it seems like he ought to be able to avoid the second attack, but I think RAW right now says that second attack is happening no matter what he does after the first one. Wouldn't be surprised to see this get errata'd/FAQ'd.

Given FFG's track record of 'it works this way because we say so' anything is possible.

But I don't see how RAW the second attack can be avoided, if there's no range/arc check. It may not make sense but the rules are IMO at least quite clear.

So you saying he boosts out of range but the second attack still happens?

So you saying he boosts out of range but the second attack still happens?

Leading to the potentially bizarre scenario wherein Autothrusters are useful vs Cluster Missiles (when Rhymer isn't involved)

Given the way the rules are currently written I would have to agree that the second attack from TLT and clusters is occurring no matter what based on "perform this attack twice." This would mean none of the declaration conditions change; target (defender), range of attack, target is in arc, ect. With that consideration, even if Valen Rudor barrel rolls after the first attack from Range 2 to Range 3 of the attacker and he happens to be sporting Autothrusters they will not trigger because the conditions of the attack that is being perform twice specified a Range 2 attack. Likewise this justifies the concept of being able to continue a second TLT attack even if Valen Rudor boosts/barrel rolls into Range 1 - because the conditions of the declared attack have not (and cannot) be changed from the initially declared Range 2.

Valen Rudor could also escape Gunner and Luke (Crew) as the attacker does have to declare the target of the second attack.

I think it's pretty clear that Autothrusters checks its activation conditions separately for each attack.

Interesting

Makes sense.

Unless ffg says otherwise, but you know someone will argue it

Seriously they should have a faq ready for when they release a wave

Lately it seems with new ability and etc some things are not crystal clear.

This one, someone could argue and other than saying declaration already took place. What else could you say to them if they're stubborn?
