Odd question from a pseudo newbie

By abrilt, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I am a newbie to FFGs Star Wars RPGs - though I have played all variations of Star Wars Roleplaying that were published prior.

How does this version compare and play vs the earlier versions? I have not found anyone who is playing and I don't mind being the first bit before I make the investment I would rather get some input.

Thanks

Todd

abrilt, I too played all previous version, this is by far my favorite. Rules are simple, easy to learn once you do, play is fun. The dice system makes things happen in fun, unpredictable ways. The game system can handle any situation. You needn't be high level to survive or succeed. The published materials are first class. My only complaint is the lack of prequel material. Welcome aboard.

A major complaint from previous systems of Star Wars RPG is that Jedi were overpowering and unbalanced.

That is no longer the case in this system.

It's fun, if you decide to jump in try with a beginner box and the pdf module from the FFG product page that extends them. They are good fun, introduce the game mechanics nicely and come with pre-made characters so you can get a feel for the system before trying to decide how you want to build them yourself.

I have played and ran all prior incarnations of Star Wars and many other systems. This one takes the cake. I've even begun looking into modding it for a fantasy game I want to run. Now that I've played it I can't go back.

Definitely grab the beginner box set, it's well done AND comes w dice, which you will eventually want two sets of (at least, I've got 3) which by itself almost justifies the cost. The beginning adventures are spot on and if your an experienced GM will only require a little tweaking to make your own.

My take on the various SW games is (quick disclaimer: I only played a little SW RPGs but own most of them).

D6 SW is the simplest.

D20/Sage is most complex and very D&D-like.

FFG is medium crunch and most balanced with Jedi-types.
