Debris obstacle, and shooting through.....if your on it

By Barry Harker, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hey guys.

Played a game the other night.

Now.

My opponent stated that because he was on the Debris feild,

And not shooting through it.

That I should not get an extra green dice.

We went through the rules.

He still argued his case.

And I said that shooting through it, or on it.

Means the same.

Who is right.

The older core rule book seems to suggest the same.

And to me it makes sense, and fair.

Any one else come across this ?

Hopefully some one could help with some clarification.

Thanks all

Barry.

Sorry.....this appears twice due to double tapping on my Kindle fire.....being very Slow !

Barry.

You trace a line from the closest point on your ship to the closest point on the target (that is in arc if not a turret). If that line overlaps an obstacle then the shot is obstructed, if it doesn't then it isn't.

Put another way, if the target is half on the obstacle and half off. If you are on the same side that is half off, it provably won't be obstructed.

Whether you're on or off of the debris field doesn't actually matter at all.

What matters is, when you draw a line between the closest point in-arc of the two ships, does that line go through any part of a debris field or asteroid?

It is possible to be on a debris field in such a way that the answer is "yes", and it's also possible to be on a debris field in such a way that the answer is "no". It all just depends on whether or not there's part of the debris field sticking out in front of your ship to obstruct your shot.

That is a good point.

He was half on the debris field.

But the half showing was between us, it was

A large marker.

Core Rules Page 14

OBSTRUCTED

An attack is obstructed if the attacker measures range through an obstacle.

If an attack is obstructed, the defender rolls one additional defense die during the “Roll Defense Dice” step.

• An attack is either obstructed or not obstructed; the number of obstructions does not change the number of additional defense dice rolled.

• Small and large ships do not obstruct attacks.

• The attacker cannot attempt to measure range to a point of the defender’s base that is not the closest point in order to avoid measuring through an obstacle. If multiple points are at equal distance from the attacker, he may choose one of those lines for measuring range

Depends. When you measure range from his ship to yours, does the range ruler go through part of the debris field? If it does, then yes you get an extra defense die. If the ruler does not go through the debris field, then no bonus die.

Thank you guys.

This has cleared up any issues.

Still learning as we go.

Very helpful

Cheers to all

Barry.

Hi community

What happen if some ship overlap an obstacle after its maneuver and have an evade token. That ship can evade the possible damage from the asteroid or debris penalty?

For example if a TIE Phantom with Stygium Particle decloaks and performs an evade action and then do its maneuver and overlap an asteroid, rolls the dice and get a critical hit, is possible to that player use the evade token recieved to evade that critical?

No. Evade tokens can only be used when defending against an attack. The die roll from going over an obstacle is not an attack, so you can't spend the evade token.

Also worth pointing out that, since it is not an attack, it does not "hit", regardless of whether it does damage, so taking damage from an asteroid will not cause a stealth device to be discarded.

Lots of abilities depend on an attack "hitting", for new players it's worth rereading the relevant section of the rules reference to make sure you understand what that means.
