New Player - Questions around Tie F/O & Compatability

By MijMike, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I'm a new player, and I'm eagerly awaiting my force awakens box set in the post. I also bought myself a LAMBDA Shuttle (an iconic ship from my childhood) but that's another story.
I've read the rules on the website and I've been looking at other ships for future purchases. I've also been reading the forums and trying to get some clarity on a few things.

Now, I understand this question has probably been answered before. I apologise if that is the case. I've flicked through the forums and got some answers but not all the answers I need. Searching hasn't helped me either, so sorry if I missed something obvious.

1) From what I understand after reading the new rules, the TIE F/o Fighter is capable of equipping things that would be restricted to a "TIE Fighter only"... so items that would only be able to be equipped to a regular tie fighter, can also be equipped to a Tie F/o Fighter, because it includes "Tie Fighter" in it's name. Is that correct?

2) Can First Order ships can equip imperial card upgrades and vice versa?

3) If the above is correct, then on the same vein can I dock TIE F/o into the new Gonzati Imperial Assault Carrier, using the same premise as it's considered a "TIE Fighter" for equipment cards.

4) if that is also correct, can I then dock two TIE Fighters and Two TIE F/o fighters, as the ships would both then be "TIE Fighter" under the equipment ruling. While it says they must be the same ships, they technically would be under that ruling, both TIE FIGHTER ships.

I only ask this because, if that is correct, I can use the two F/o's from my box set and the two TIE that come with it - while i learn to play.

I'm not asking for list building or advice on whether or not this would be a good team up, just some rule clarification. Thank you.

1: A name is considered to match if any part of it matches (for upgrade cards only at present). So TIE only goes on anything with TIE in the name. TIE Fighter only goes on anything with TIE Fighter in the name including TIE f/o Fighter.

2: Yes.

3: Not clear at present, as noted the current ruling only applies to which upgrade cards a ship can equip.

4: see 3.

The Gozanti needs an FAQ for it to be clear whether it can dock TIE f/os, and whether they would count as the same ship type.

A ship type is considered to satisfy a restriction type if every part of the restriction type matches some part of the ship type.

So if this is true. What is the rule on lets say an escalation game of 150 points, how many tie fighters and/or tie Fos can you have? Rule says 8.

Currently the clarification above is for *equipping upgrade cards* only. Until something applies it to ANY other part of the game, that remains the case, so as written at present you can field 8 of each type of TIE Fighter, and you can't attach TIE/fos to the Gozanti, and Youngster's ability doesn't work on TIE/fos, etc etc. There are a bunch of outstanding questions like this which people hope will be answered in the next FAQ release; it's a shame they weren't answered on the release of the sets, but... that's the situation we're in.

I think most places are letting Youngsters ability go.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I'll await an FAQ before deciding whether or not to buy it :).

FO fighters are TIE fighters (for purposes of upgrade card limitations, at least, and we assume things like being able to dock to the gozanti), because their ship type includes "tie" and "fighter", the two are different ships though and would not be allowed to mix and match on the gozanti without house ruling it (which should be totally fine in an epic game).

Thanks for that. I will probably look at getting two more of the FO ties at some stage. Just had my first ever game prior to posting this and they served me well :)

If you are playing casually with friends then go for it. Most of the rules we talk about here are Tournament slanted but can be house ruled if your are not playing competitively or (more likely) don't have a big enough fleet so have to proxie ships and cards to field a squad of sufficient size.

we assume

Not all of us.

If we take this at face value, assuming that TIE Fighters and TIE/FO Fighters are not one in the same with respects to docking the ships on the Gozanti, then you cannot dock Darth Vader to a Gozanti. Why? The same reason they had to put him in the FAQ for the TIE/x1 Title upgrade. Darth Vader's ship card, in the ship type field, says "TIE Advanced X1." If a TIE/FO Fighter cannot dock to a Gozanti under the idea that it is not of the ship type "TIE FIGHTER" in respects to the docking clamps upgrade card then Darth Vader cannot dock to a Gozanti under the idea that it is not of the ship type "TIE ADVANCED" in respects to the docking clamps upgrade card.

It's a shame they didn't update the FAQ with the release of the sets, on that point I could not agree with you more.

My question is. What is the upgrade card that is only for Tie fighters?

There isn't one TTBOMK. It's just that that happens to be the example used. The best one to look at is Integrated Astromech. It says 'X-Wing Only', which lets it go on T65s (which are called 'X-Wing' as their ship title) but also on 'T70 X-Wing's because they include the whole of the word 'X-Wing' in their ship name.

Or Twin Ion Engine Mk II - it says TIE only, so anything with TIE in the name can equip it - fighters, f/o fighters, bombers, defenders, phantoms, punishers etc etc etc.

Currently by RAW, I'd argue that Vader cant dock to a Gozanti. They really, really should have FAQ'd this on release, or just included better rules in the first place. RAI is obviously that he can, but it needs an FAQ to make sure officially.

FWIW, if I was playing in anything other than a tournament game, I'd be happy to assume RAI on all of these sorts of things.

I'm starting to wish they'd just errata'd Vader (obviously he's in a TIE Advanced, look at the icon/dial) and then introduced the substring rule with a new keyword (e.g. "Any TIE" rather than "TIE only" for the mk 2).

Time for some Forum Necromancy:

Since Youngster apparently does share his Action EPT with TIE/FOs as well, can you run a swarm of 5 TIEs and 6 TIE/FOs in a single escalation list?

Yes assuming they fit points-wise.
