Tales from the Hydian Way

By JoshuaEvanBrown, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

So, Ben and I sat down to record a few days before Christmas, and promptly derailed ourselves talking about Keeping the Peace and specifically the Armorer...not our usual stuff, but Ben had a hot mic, so enjoy this bonus episode, and you may get some insights into how we talk before we do our episodes.

What are your favorite synergies in Force & Destiny?

Happy Holidays!

So, I'm moving, and that means I've been packing up game stuff...so much game stuff. Usually stuff for systems I don't play much anymore. Ben & I get talking about how to use those materials for Star Wars, and I think we wind up with some good stuff. Check out Episode 73: the Converted Tale, and then tell me about what adventures or settings you've converted for your game...or would like to do so!

Thinking about the most thematic adventure to convert for Force & Destiny, I think Ravenloft really works - Dark Side force user, creepy prophecies, strange inability to leave...yep, I'm itching to do a Ravenloft conversion...maybe a entire star cluster shrouded in a dark nebula, each world ruled by corrupt and bitter lords trapped by their own hubris.

Good thing I have some time on the plane to think about these things.

I look forward to hearing your ideas!

Ooooo You need to write that up and share....I think something along the lines of the Maw cluster of black holes inside a dark nebula. very hard to astrogate out. each attempt to astrogate free tends to drop you on another planet... with a different dark lord....Maybe each dark lord has different navigational data...so each lord defeated gives you more data and a boost to your astrogation check to get free.

The hubris is that if they shared their astrogation data they could all get free,

I like it... you have to write that one up. I imagine it is like the Maw cluster tones of black holes in a dark nebula. Every time you try and leave you get dropped on another planet. With another dark lord. Each dark lord has astrogation data. The hubris is that if they shared their astrogation data they could all get free,

Dang, I was thinking my next game was going to be a Force Awakens-era game...now I think I want to run this. It would be so dark, but so awesome. Definitely food for thought - lots of meat in those posts...all my Ravenloft stuff is in boxes right now, but in a week or so, look out internet, I may just be recruiting ;)

I call dibs on a slot :)

Was a great episode again, I'm one of 'those' people too never having really enjoyed DnD. Lots of great general campaign building advice to boot as well.

Noted! Once I get settled in my new place, and get life in order, I'll reach out :D

I'm glad you liked it! As for the D&D thing, we all come to this hobby from different perspectives. Honestly, I am far less a Star Wars fan than I am a gaming fan (which probably shows in my relatively limited knowledge of the Legends material), and D&D was my starting point in the formal hobby, so I'll always have a soft spot. Also, germane to the show topic - it probably has had more material produced for it than any other system over the years, so lots of stuff to mine :D

I generally find it easy to come up with campaign ideas, it's much harder to sustain them in the face of time & player actions ;)

That's where judicious conversion of material helps.

Heh just wanted to drop a line that I began to listen to your show. and it's great! Thanks :-)

where you moving too?

I just moved to the San Diego area. Billed as warm and sunny, but so far have had some fun storms

Now that my real-life peregrination has finished, I want to point you to our latest episode - #74 The Tale of Crisis. Ben & I talk about how to use planned crises to add excitement to your game, and how to make it so your players don't hate you for it.

We give examples for you to steal and look forward to hearing from you with your experiences on in-game crises.

Ben & I dive into Keeping the Peace this week - well, into the first half, anyway. We discover that there is more to this book than we can cover in our usual format, so we focus on the crunchy side of the house. We'll tackle some of the other elements in future casts, but it quickly becomes clear we love Guardians and we love the stories this book inspires - join us for Episode 81: the Keeping the Peace Tale

Hi folks,

This week, we are joined by FFG's Max Brooke, talking about choices, conflict, morality, and telling good stories about the above on Episode 83 Return of Max

This is the first of two episodes with Max, and I learned a fair bit. Tell me what you think!

Cheers,

Joshua

Yet another epic show, well done guys and thanks to Max for his time.

Yet another epic show, well done guys and thanks to Max for his time.

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Hi folks -

Check out the second episode to arise out of our time with Max Brooke - we go wider, wilder, and maybe just a bit weirder as we continue exploring Conflict, Morality, and what it means to be a conflicted character. So join us for Episode 84 - the Conflicted Max Tale

So, I've been on the road/plane/boat for a while, and thought that I would catch you all up.

This week, we have Episode 87: The Grand Combat Tale

Sure, this is mostly focused on big battles and such, and thus feels a little more Age than F&D but your Warriors & Peacekeepers definitely will dig this, and everyone else can have a role. More importantly, the choices made during grand conflicts like the Mandalorian Wars, the Clone Wars, & the Galactic Civil War all have shaped the destinies of Force Users for millennia - make sure you find the path that tells the most compelling stories.

Sit back, listen, and tell us how you've used large scale conflicts in your F&D games.

And I'd also like to point you to some other recent episodes:

Episode 86 - The One Rogue Tale: We were recording the day this dropped, and it was pretty much all we could talk about - but we turned that into an opportunity to discuss fun ways to tell your story, cinematic tricks to keep your game exciting, and generally be thrilled at more new Star Wars.

Episode 85 - The Lead By Example Tale: We talk about the stories that can arise from the character options in this book - and trust me, there is plenty for a Force-User to like!
