PTL clarification

By cassieous, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Needing a little clarificaton on PTL it reads

"One per round, after ou perform an action, you may perform one free action shown on your action bar"

i read this as sayin that if my Tie/IN makes a boost action i may then take a stress and perform a second boost action due to PTL and having boost in my action bar, the rules state that you can not make the same action twice though the card reads "an action on your action bar", so as it reads i am allowed to perform a second boost, though a player i play with says i can not due to the rules.

Am i allowed to take the same action twice due to PTL cards woding?

You can only perform an action once.

Rules Reference Page 3:

A ship cannot perform the same action more than once during a single round, even if one or more of the actions are free actions.

PTL allows you to take multiple different actions. So with your TIE/IN, you can boost then use PTL to barrel roll, focus, or evade.

"Can't" rules always win over "can" rules, unless the "can" rule is directly and specifically overriding the "can't" rule.

In this case, that means the "You can't ever perform the same action twice in the same round" rule wins.

"Can't" rules always win over "can" rules, unless the "can" rule is directly and specifically overriding the "can't" rule.

Sort of. A rule that says you can't do something (e.g. take actions while stressed) is overridden by a card effect that says you can do that thing in that circumstance (e.g. Tycho's pilot ability), but a card effect that says you can't do something (e.g. the no multiple evade tokens clause of Comm Relay) is absolute, and cannot be overridden by anything.

Now what about when you equip a card with the Action: header? Does that action get added to your action bar or is it a "card" action?

Example question. If I have Expose and PTL on my Decimator can I perform a focus action and then use PTL to Expose or do I have to use Expose first? Seems like a pointless difference but I can see it having an effect in game terms. If you TL'd first to check range then tried to use Expose, that could have an impact on which action you wanted to use first.

Do action upgrade cards add their action to your ships action bar?

Action cards do not add the action bar to your upgrade bar.

A Decimator cannot take two EPTs. You can use Expose with the Experimental Interface Modification in order to perform 1 action followed by 1 free action from an action header upgrade card.

On an A-Wing pilot (like Tycho) that already has an EPT you can add the A-Wing Test Pilot title to give it a second EPT. In this instance if you used expose and PTL you must use Expose first and then perform the second action from your action bar. If you choose to "evade" as your first action you will not, by the wording of the card, be able to PTL for Expose.

Do action upgrade cards add their action to your ships action bar?

You can't do that because they are both EPTs and the decimator only has one Ept slot.

Moreover, push the limit says "an action in your action bar"

To activate expose in that way you need Experimental Interface, which works exactly like ptl but it regards cards with the ACTION header.

Cards such as daredevil, expose, saboteur, even expert handling.. :D

Do action upgrade cards add their action to your ships action bar?

No. Compare with Engine Upgrade, which does add Boost to your action bar. So you can PtL into a Boost with Engine Upgrade, but you can't Experimental Interface into a Boost with Engine Upgrade.

There are some upgrades which add an action to your Action bar such as the Falcon title and Engine Upgrade but most are Actions all on their own.

Note that PtL and its modification sibling called Experimental Interface both do the same thing on a basic level; each is triggered when the ship performs an action and then allows the ship to take an additional action while gaining a Stress. Where they differ, besides the upgrade slot they fill, is that PtL only allows actions on the ship's Action Bar while EI only allows the use of "Action" upgrade cards; these are the upgrade cards that require an Action to use such as your Expose.

Right, derp. Bad example. But I'm right about action cards, yes?

No, you're not, sorry.

PtL will only allow a free action from your action bar, and unless an upgrade card specifically states it adds an icon to your action bar, then it won't be allowed. Cards with the Action: header are NOT an action bar action. Experimental Interface is the opposite and does not allow action bar actions, but does trigger Action: header upgrades.

Groovy thanks guys
