Space rocks Frigate - A Review.

By DariusAPB, in X-Wing

That's got to be much harder to police than a company which actually build, advertises and sells copyrighted material in the public domain.

Minor quibble: I think you want to say "public sphere". You're discussing Intellectual Property law, and "Public Domain" has a very specific meaning in that context- which does not apply to this case. I got very confused for a moment!

In most casual contexts, "public domain" the way you are using it would be totally fine.

Awesome to see you got yours Darius, I was also one of the lucky ones and got one, Then through some utter luck was able to grab a second one from a Game shop that had got one. I'm looking at printing the templates for them both and trying them out in an epic scale battle just for fun.

It's sad Space rocks is gone, I would have loved to get ahold of more of their asteroids and done up a 3x6 asteroid field to try and pilot. Mike was always good to me with all the orders I made from them in the past, I hope after everything that he is ok even tho things turned out the way they did.

I am 85% done making a Victory Class I Star Destroyer that is to scale (As scale as I could really make it, will need a 4x6 play mat for it to fit on) that will be used as a play mat its self like some other members have made in the past. I'll share some pictures with it and my Neb-B's when I get it all done up and detailed.

Which game shop had the Space Rocks Nebulon B? What city/state?

That's another possibility. Mel's usually active on these boards, has anyone heard from recently?

This is old, but for what it's worth, Mel continues to be very active on the BGG boards for X-Wing and Armada.

Anyone wanna part with their Space Rocks Nebulon?

I'm just guessing it wouldn't be impossible to make your own. That's actually how the original movie model was made - they bought a whole bunch of boat and propane tank models from a hobby store and stuck 'em all together. It's the level of accuracy that you're looking for that might affect whether or not you wanna do that.

Impossible? No. I've scratchbuilt before. It's a matter of time and what I'd use it for. If I scratch built it, I'd take the time to make it right but then I wouldn't want to throw it out on a game table for an evening of play.

Mel's. It looks great but $300+ for the smaller version. $600+ for the larger. Both unpainted. Easy paint job, but still...

I used eBay's "Best Offer" option to get a good deal on this 3D printed Nebulon. I filled the imperfections with some Bondo and sanded the crap out of it. My Corsec Engineering stands should be here next week. I'll glue in the Omni mounts and send it away for a commission painting job. I asked to have it painted to look like the Redemption from ESB. The guy does good work so I'm excited to see it when it's finished. I've already completed 5 sets of cards for it. One regular set for each faction and a couple extra sets for the Redemption and the Free Lance (scum version). Warspite, the Imperial title, just spawns a ship under its spar each round so it needs no special cards. The ship will have 3 sections, including a weaker spar section as per the ship's canon. When it's all said and done, I'll have a very sweet 19" Nebulon-B for around $250 total.

May we see these cards? They sound sweet.

Sure. I'm at the lake now but I'll post them later. Each faction has a fore, spar and aft section. There's 3 title cards of the 3 unique named ships that add features to the base ship for 20 points each. I just made an extra set of 3 cards each for the Redemption and the Free Lance because the Redemption adds a cargo slot in the spar, with a free Backup Shield Generator, 2 extra Shields and 1 extra hull per section while the Free Lance adds a cannon slot in the spar with a free Ion Cannon upgrade, 2 extra hull and 1 extra shield per section. The ion cannon fires from the aft section which employs extended broadside arcs instead of the standard broadside arcs of the regular versions. The cards are so busy because, obviously, a ship of this size is loaded with slots and stats so making the extra sets for those 2 ships made sense to make things easier for play. Like I said, the Warspite spawns an Academy Pilot from its spar section at the start of each round. The ship may be placed anywhere under the spar that is open and may face any direction. The space under the spar will be left open to allow ships to pass freely beneath but will have a removable targeting token that can be placed for targeting the spar section. I bought a few ship placement markers from Applied Perspective in case ships need to be temporary moved for targeting purposes.

Oh, and all versions have a standard tractor beam that can be fired from the forward arc once per round for 2 energy. There are 6 hardpoints on all ships except the Free Lance, which has 7. So, with the primary and tractor beam, they can attack up to 8-9 times per round if they have the energy to do so. These things are going to be absolute beasts at the X-wing scale.

Wicked. Imagine Star Destroyer at X-wing scale:

I'm currently designing a Battle of Scarif Epic scenario which will feature the Nebulon-B and a custom, wrecked GR-75 to emulate the one that smashed into the Devastator as it tried to jump to hyperspace. I had the nose of the Devastator professionally printed and laminated to put on the edge of the mat during the last mission. The cutout is a few inches wide by about 17-18 inches long. I'm going to place the two pieces of the wrecked GR-75 just off its bow like it just bounced off of it.

or the Lepin (knock-off Lego) can also be a good alternative. good scale and detail, and comes already in the correct colours.

That is a thing of beauty. Now I am going to have to look into getting one of those...

I'd play it....

Actually I really like that.

Are your cards available yet to show? Sorry if I'm a thorn. I'm just really interested in this.

I'll try to post them tonight. I've been too busy to get to it.

Here you go. The generics are just like the Warspite minus the title and with Rebel and Scum icons instead of Imperial, of course.

No problem. I couldn't get the spar to perfectly match the other two cards, so it's bigger and sets off to the side by itself. The fore and aft cards line up side by side like the FFG cards. I stole the images from an old post by Mel from Mel's Miniatures. I haven't come across anyone else who incorporated the spar section into XWM, though.

Just a question, why did you name the Rebel and Scum ones differently?

All 3 factions have unique titles but the Redemption and the Free Lance have boosted stats so I just made sets for them to make remembering them easier. The Warspite spawns a TIE under its spar each round, so its stats do not get boosted. I have generic sets for Rebel and Scum printed too but they look just like the Warspite cards but with appropriate faction logos.

Here's what the cards look like laid out on the table:
