Space rocks Frigate - A Review.

By DariusAPB, in X-Wing

Disclaimer: The below is all my opinion, based on one sample. I've been requested to review this as I am fortunate enough to have my grubby mitts on a Space rocks.

First off, at 60 cm it's an intimidating beast, it's got the right shape and is certainly detailed enough.

Here she is with a Raider and Decimator Escorts.

Overall I wasn't that impressed with a few features, I did find that the centre section that bridged the fore and aft, as well as the antennae and fins were generally ill fitting, requiring either a bit of filing or gluing on my part. I also glued the two clear poles to the ship itself to ensure support and correct angle.

The centre section doesn't quite match up with the fore and aft also, leaving a bit of a gap.

It could be a one off.

The single biggest issue I have with the ship is the gloss finish on the varnish/paint. Bad choice, doesn't fit star wars - would probably have to ink over/dirty up manually.

I hope the following pics illustrate.

All in all however, wear and tear will probably remove the gloss over a few games. She'll do in a pinch. She does include rules in A4 Paper, as well as a suggested dial.

All in all, not bad. Could definitely be better, at least it's something.

It's worth the price tag, and of course is a rare item (of which I hope everyone here gets theirs if they ordered one).

Space Rocks got the Disney copyright spanking

No Neb-B for me :(

:/ I am truly lucky. I am only posting this as a few people requested it - wasn't my intention to aggrieve.

I'm not really upset

Couldn't afford it anyway

Was a cool model and well designed rules. I had a peak once.

im just glad yours arrived mate. i was worried you might have lost your cash on that one.

Given its now a *very* limited model it should be worth more than you paid for it already , that is unless FFG bring one out :)

Indeed! Congrats on getting the model - you've got your centerpiece, and it's now a collector's item too!

Thanks guys, I understand she'll be a rare beast for a while. I'm still surprised I got it.

The Raider is already being reprinted, so they must know in the back of their minds the opportunity the Neb-B presents.

Need the accountants to give the go-ahead.

And they'll have sales figures at the price Space Rocks charged so they know they can do better with a better quality official product at a mass produced price point.

A bit of touching up on a model that size, from a small manufacturer, is probably somewhat inevitable.

She sure looks great though!

Let us know how the rules work out (that dial is generating a Crazy amount of energy).

Really nice to see a bad story turn out good for at least one person.

If no official version arrives (two chances), it could potentiallly reach that legendary Games Workshop Metal Thunderhawk status...

Geez, it can be considered a D-weapon all by itself!

You just better hope that Disney don't send someone to your house to take it from you, And if they do, you better REALLY hope that person doesn't come dressed as a Mouse.

Imagine how surreal it would be having a Mouse wrestle that out of your hands and run off into a a waiting car to speed off into the distance. Would certainly be a great end to this inspiring story :)

Sincerely glad this ended well for you, particularly at this time of year. It's a Festivus miracle!

Why bother reviewing something that's now impossible to get?

Why bother reviewing something that's now impossible to get?

Because we asked him to?

Is reviewing the product of a company that circumvented the IP that FFG pays out the nose for, on FFG's boards, really the kind of thing we want to see on this forum? Seems like this is much better suited to a Reddit or Imgur post.

I do.

And if in passing it encourages FFG to make bigger, better fancier Shinies, then so much the better!

This. I had no plans to buy one but am still curious about all aspects of this game. Had he built it himself I would have been equally interested

Oh well fair enough, I missed that.

When did it arrive? I really hope mine comes, I must've been very early ordering, back in July! :(

Thanks guys, yeah the review was on request. The item arrived just today.

I thought about this last night, and it occurs to me: A lot of people play tournament, this thing would never be allowed in anything official, neither would any Mels. Further note: Mels is common parlance on this forum, I refer to a Mels, we all know what I mean, at least most of us.

This toy is for those narrative games, or epic scenery. That they sold, that there was such an interest is something FFG hopefully come to realize, when they release super-epic rules in maybe 2-3 years time. If not, that's fine. It depends how well epic does.

Right now my biggest dilemma is do I stay a loyalist Imperial, or do I turncoat and go rebel. The Neb B, while I originally got it for an Imperial task force just feels so **** rebel.

The first rule of Mel's Club is: you do not talk about Mel's Club. The second rule of Mel's Club is: you do not talk abou ... oh, wait - no smoking.

If no official version arrives (two chances), it could potentiallly reach that legendary Games Workshop Metal Thunderhawk status...

When I worked in Black Library/Fanatic for GW there was one of those huge metal thunderhawks lying around in the office, unassembled and in card boxs rather than the wood presentation case.

We had a clear out and no one wanted it so i nabbed it. I never got round to building it, far too much hassle tbh.

I eventually sold it to someone for about £350, and then about two months later the Forgeworld one came out!

(i had an idea they were making one but wasnt sure so sold it anyway before someone, either main range plastics or FW made one)

With regards to the Nebulon model, if i got one it would be purely for scenery as a cool thing for the fighters to fly around, i'd consider collisions with the lower superstructure, should they happen to be the same as hitting an asteroid.

Personally i think its a nice bit of kit but probably out of the xwings game 'scale', its a ship you really want in Armada rather than xwing.

edit: i meant *unassembled* not assembled... if it had been built there was no way no one would have wanted it!

Yeah, this is a beast for special occasions/scenery clearly But usable in a large epic game.

Kinda like the aforementioned T-hawk really. (Not a model for a 4x4 board).

Someone's lit one of Mel's Frigates up!
