What is On-Topic and what is Off-Topic

By Crabbok, in X-Wing Off-Topic

It is a pet peeve of mine, to see people post off-topic things in the general section, and even more to see people post ON-TOPIC things in the off-topic section! I began to wonder if people simply don't know what is and is not the topic in the first place!

X-Wing General : This pertains to X-Wing Miniatures Game. There are sub-sections for more specific threads, such as local organized play, and list building etc. But the general section is for all things related to the game. Some things that would be considered ON-TOPIC and appropriate for the X-Wing main forum are as follows:

  • Speculation about a future wave
  • Complaints about an upgrade, ship, or other aspect of the game.
  • Theorycrafting on ship and card combinations
  • Tournaments discussion such as Nationals, Gen-Con, etc.
  • Questions about how to resolve something that happens during a game of X-Wing

Off-Topic : This section if for all things that do NOT relate to the X-Wing Miniatures Game. So perhaps you wanted to talk about something Star Wars related, separate from the game; it could go here. Suppose you want to talk about another fandom, ie Doctor Who, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica... they could go here. Even some other discussion not related to anything above, such as social etiquette. The only things you should not post here are things against the site rules (Naughty / disgusting stuff usually) and probably religion / political stuff, as those topics NEVER end well on the internet. Some examples of things that belong in the off-topic section would be:

  • Star Wars Movie discussion
  • Star Wars TV shows discussion
  • Star Trek discussion
  • Why Captain America is the best Avenger?
  • Suggestions for configuring a cisco router
  • Favorite Holiday Recipes
  • Reading suggestions
  • Discussing problems with society
  • Discussions about what is and what is not "off-topic"

Those are some general guidelines. I need everyone to sign this memo and have it back to me by the end of the day.

May the Force be with you!

[*]Tournaments discussion such as Nationals, Gen-Con, etc.

This would be in the organized play section, seeing as how it is about the official organized play circuit.

A bit of leeway on major SW news is to be expected, that's a bit of a grey area anyway

I too have been really surprised at the number of threads about the game itself that get posted in general though. Can't understand that.

How about ship repaints? Didn't we used to have a sub for that? Where do we post those now?

Oddly it only bugs me when people post on topic stuff in the off topic section.

Do you mean Off Topic there?

And as for the Organized Play section, I find that section is used to FIND a place to play, not to discuss Worlds, or Nationals, etc.

And Robin - The repaints section was disbanded so they can go in general. And yeah, it's the X-Wing Miniatures Game specific threads in the Off-Topic that have really been the straw that broke the camel's back. Why go to Off-Topic to ask when the Ghost comes out, or ask about a list? ha ha!

Yes, yes I did.

And yes, it gets used for that as well. I suspect the INTENTION of the organized play sub forum was to discuss FFG organized play tournaments, but it keeps getting used for both.

And, as an addendum, if you have a topic that you want to discuss that already has a sub-forum devoted to it... Please post your topic in that sub-forum. Particularly dealing with list building...

For me anything not directly related to the game or the miniatures should not be on the front page.

So endless discussion about TFA should be in here not on the main page.

Repaints SHOULD have there own section as they once did but as they got yoinked i think they are more relevant to main page.

Discussion about the films, rebels, the RPGs, books and about FFG as a business should be OT.

The problem is everyone thinks they are a special case and wants to single out their post/thread. So instead of paints and repaints being in one of the two ongoing threads people create there own ones, which then get lost a day later.

Likewise, everyone wants to comment on the film but doesnt post it in off topic as they want the most people to see it so spam the front page. I know i was guilty of this with my xmas tree post, i'd put it up in here but realised most people would not see it as only about 10 per cent of forum users actually seem to know 'off topic' exists. :)

What we really need and simply wont get is some 'player mods' who are able to move stuff to the right sections.

If posts that were 'list build' or 'off topic' or 'rules questions' were habitually moved to the right place promptly then people would actually have to look in those section and get used to using them.

Cant see FFG intrusting even minor powers like that to a player though and they clearly dont have enough mod time to do it for every board

Do you think the Off-Topic section needs a sub forum for "Episode 7 discussion"?

lol

heheh, no one would use it if we did :)

It needs one on how awesome Ash VS Evil Dead is!
