Brief PSA.

colloquial use and the eventual misspelling of words bother some people, others aren't as bothered. Some personal pet peeves of my own include adding an 's' to a word or replacing that or the with dat or da (not that there is anyone on this site that would do dat).

fixed dat for ya.

*(as in break..yeah, I know it sucks when you have to explain it.. anyway)

You know, before we had dictionaries there were no codified correct or incorrect spellings or grammar.

Yeah, and before there were eyeglasses I wouldn't be able to read anyway. The past sucked. Your point?

I hope nobody is offended by the Captain here. We're all just a bunch of geeks on a gaming website discussing our hobby. It really doesn't matter if we type something wrong. Who cares? But if you're typing "should of" on this website, where else will you type that? Captain Litwick is just looking out for you by letting you know the origin of "should've" so you don't make a blunder when it might really matter (i.e. an email or letter to your boss or a funding agency). This PSA isn't meant to be rude; it's meant to be helpful.

Should have => should've => sounds like 'should of.' Understanding the etymology helps with spelling things in the future.

I hole-hardedly agree, but ...

*twitch*

Did you read the hole* post? Because you should of* ben* twitching at way more than that.

should of mentioned that earlier :D

Oh, yes, I read the whole thing. I just didn't want to quote a wall of text. I thought that would be overkill, all be it standard.

Not quite true, of course. There've been rules concerning the use of language since before the written word. You have to of course be able to understand the people with whom you're trying to communicate. Even spelling had certain rules before formal dictionaries were published. The main thing dictionaries accomplished was eradicating certain local differences and standardizing. That's not the same though, as not having rules at all. :P.

grammarS and other rulsez. should of been easier in dat first playz.

on a half serious note (as I'm having more fun here than I'm probably entitled to): if english isn't your first/native language, I can totally see where the problems are and nagging about the finer points of talking to each other in the correctEST of terms is a little uncalled for. for the 'natives' (and yeah, I know..): just imagine what -you- sound like in another language and take a cup of humility; it's on the house.

now, if english IS your first (and probably only) language: you really should of known better :D ..and I can totally see what the fuss is about; I cringe too when I listen to -some- native german-speakers and they do things -wrong-, not deliberately to provoke, but on an "innocent, doesn't know better" level.. can hack 200+ words per minute into his smartphone/whatsapp/facebook/OtherNoUseStuff but can't use a proper and full sentence to save his life.. that's just sad. so I can totally see the PSA there.

the OP should just make it clear which group it is meant for, so I can either have my fun, too (I'll have it anyway :D) or search for the axe to run amok :D

"Und willst du nicht mein Bruder sein, so schlag ich dir den Schädel ein"?

English is difficult, but you can understand it through tough thorough thought, though

Shoulda, coulda, woulda.

Nope.

English isn't difficult though, people just like to pretend it is. :P.

It's just not hard to get right*correct.

Thank you for this totally necessary topic. I went back and reviewed ALL of my posts to assure I was not one of the offenders .I am proud to announce I am not.

.... Aaaaaand SCENE!

Now let us refrain from posting in this pointless thread again, shall we?

I've just been seeing it more and more on this forum, and I know **** well that a good percentage of its users are of equal, or typically greater age than myself.

It's justplease stop making this mistake

Stop trying to be the grammar police

Looking back in retrospect, you can take the grammar out of the police but you can't take the police out of grammar.

More too the point, I appreciate this thread, even more so because it's 11pm in the evening.

I don't want to say the same identical thing as everyone else already has and avoid overused cliches, so I'll stop now. Continue carrying on.

...or, as Jabba would say...

Should've.

Not Should of.

Should - Have.

Oh sweet Jebus thank you.

Weight? Sew should of ain't write?

Grammar should be descriptive, rather than prescriptive, so long as meaning isn't obscured by the difference.
