I hope nobody is offended by the Captain here. We're all just a bunch of geeks on a gaming website discussing our hobby. It really doesn't matter if we type something wrong. Who cares? But if you're typing "should of" on this website, where else will you type that? Captain Litwick is just looking out for you by letting you know the origin of "should've" so you don't make a blunder when it might really matter (i.e. an email or letter to your boss or a funding agency). This PSA isn't meant to be rude; it's meant to be helpful.
Should have => should've => sounds like 'should of.' Understanding the etymology helps with spelling things in the future.

Not quite true, of course. There've been rules concerning the use of language since before the written word. You have to of course be able to understand the people with whom you're trying to communicate. Even spelling had certain rules before formal dictionaries were published. The main thing dictionaries accomplished was eradicating certain local differences and standardizing. That's not the same though, as not having rules at all.

on a half serious note (as I'm having more fun here than I'm probably entitled to): if english isn't your first/native language, I can totally see where the problems are and nagging about the finer points of talking to each other in the correctEST of terms is a little uncalled for. for the 'natives' (and yeah, I know..): just imagine what -you- sound like in another language and take a cup of humility; it's on the house.
now, if english IS your first (and probably only) language: you really should of known better ..and I can totally see what the fuss is about; I cringe too when I listen to -some- native german-speakers and they do things -wrong-, not deliberately to provoke, but on an "innocent, doesn't know better" level.. can hack 200+ words per minute into his smartphone/whatsapp/facebook/OtherNoUseStuff but can't use a proper and full sentence to save his life.. that's just sad. so I can totally see the PSA there.

Grammar should be descriptive, rather than prescriptive, so long as meaning isn't obscured by the difference.
