Open Post to TFA Detractors (Potential Spoilers)

rey with a maul double saber would be badass. but can you imagine the nerd rage

How many threads would that take up?

Then there's the arguments, ruined friendships, broken marriages, riots in the streets and the end of civilization as we know it. All because of a glow stick in a movie.

Yes

I can imagine the nerd rage

"I can feel the hate swelling in [them] now"

I'm actually very optimistic about that. After all, we only had to suffer through about a month of nerd rage before the lightsaber with crossguards was accepted. Or generally accepted, at least.

I never liked it until I actually saw the movie because I was worried it was going to be another bad guy with a fancy lightsaber in place of an actual personality. Instead we got a lightsaber that 100% reflects it's weilder's character.

Also like how the son of the pragmatic fellow who owns the Falcon has a lightsaber that looks and sounds like it barely works aswell as being customised to give it an advantage. Nice little touches that compliment the character of Kylo Ren. Unlike the double lightsaber of Darth Maul which we can say is definitely a double lightsaber belonging to Darth Maul.

While the movie was alright how could this movie guarantee that the next movie will be any good? You can only rehash a story so many times and to be honest rehashing Empire will not work as well as rehashing a new hope.

The movie was alright for a rehash but that is just the thing. It was a rehash. Lets not forget the mess that was into darkness. Yes I know it sounds silly at first that people were wondering J.J. would make episode 7 as bad a Jar Jar then when it comes out for people to already be worrying about if the next one will be good but you have to admit copying the same story again and again will start to get stale.

The next movie cannot be a rehash if it were to be any good. JJ proved that he can rehash a good movie alright but what about making a new story or a new continuation of a good story? His skills as a director has yet to be tested and proven.

I suggest you don't watch any blockbuster movie from the last five year then.

Both Avengers movies, both Captain America films, Guardians of the Galaxy, both Star Trek films, the dark Knight trilogy and the Pirates of the Carribean films have all either used the exact plot of ANH or the stucture for their franchises. Every movie is pretty much about a group of people working together and stopping a big plot thing from killing the good guys plot thing [usually a city.] The fact that the destruction of the Starkiller base was in the background for a far more intimate story involving Rey, Finn, Han and Kylo makes this film more refreshing to me than most other action movies I've seen recently. Of course I'd have prefered for it not to be there but it doesn't get in the way of the new parts of the story.

I'm finding alot of complaints about the movie to be pretty unfounded [nobody actually seems to know what a plot hole is] or superfical [too much focus on details that are not important for a film to be good].

On my second veiwing I pretty much seen all the little set ups for some of the things people are calling 'plot holes' and I honestly think it's an incredibly tight script that doesn't leave anything unexplained that it didn't want to be left as a mystery. The film's biggest flaw is assuming that the dense audience of 2015 can remember things from the first act.

She just got there faster.

I think this is also why we see the Jedi masters concerned over the age of Anakin and why Yoda tells Ghost-Obi that Luke is too old to train. Once the innocence of youth is lost, we no longer look at the world with the optimism of a child.

The film seems to do well with audiences that are not huge Star Wars fans. So it can't be too difficult to enjoy if not grasp the story.

I must say that I'm a bit surprised by this. I'd expected many to say something like "I have no idea what is going on," but haven't heard that yet. Even my parents liked it.

This puts the supposed 'plot holes' in perspective. It's not a problem if it is not a problem, if you see what I mean.

Was he the only trooper with the power maul in the entire First Order? It seems weird that he's the only one in the movie.

As if on weapons day every one was given blasters. But he went nah.... I want dat maul.

Reminds me of thet battle of Waterloo, where (as I recall) there was a commander fighting with a large axe. I think the soldiers under his command attempted to take the farm building.

This guy fits the bill as well:

I'm just going to post these here.

Caution language.

But yeah the best Female character and they threw here down a garbage chute. Now that's sexist.

I understand the indignation, but is the sexist meme really necessary?

Might be a specialty, sort of like being a marksman or the heavy weapon guy. Sniper might be a better comparison, since that takes a lot of specialized training like that maul thing probably does.

Also, someone modded a TR-8R skin for Tryndamere into League of Legends.

If avatar had good characters, dialog, pacing, and plot then the complaints that it's just another rehash wouldn't matter much. I'm sure people who don't like the movie feel as I did after seeing avatar.

Indeed. It's like people criticising Avatar for being The Last Samurai - In SPAAAAAAAAAAACE.

And The Last Samurai for being Dances With Wolves - In JAPAAAAAAAAAAAN.

All three are great films, so what if they share plot elements?

I hear that "Avatar was Dances With Wolves in SPAAAACE" comment all the time, and I'm not saying it's not apt, but it's pretty funny that Dances With Wolves, when it first came out, was criticized as being "Lawrence of Arabia with Native Americans." People are like "Avatar is such a rip-off of this other movie, without realizing that the "other" movie is also considered a rip-off of yet another movie...

He did have a blaster, though... he threw it on the ground and took the melee weapon off of his belt when he saw Finn put a lightsaber through his buddy's chest.

Probably overestimated Finn's ability to deflect the shot. If Finn could do that, TR-8R would have had no counter to it. So he went into melee, where he can at least try to block or dodge attacks. Then it turned out Finn wasn't very good with a lightsaber, but by that point the gun was on the ground way over there.

Might as well read this now.

This has been a fun thread (mostly) to read, but I do remember one thing that seems to have been forgotten. The hate TFA has been getting from some quarters reminds me of the righteous indignation that was visited on Empire Strikes Back when it first came out. I remembered loving it from the get-go but SO many people hated it because it "left them hanging". In retrospect we see it as the best Star Wars movie or at worst in the top two. I'm willing to reserve judgment.

P.S. I thought TFA was pretty fun!

I think that might have been a riot baton, which says some interesting things about how Stormtroopers relate to the people on the planets they control.

Why would there be nerd rage? I think Rey with a double bladed lightsaber would be very cool, and suit her fighting style. Well, actually it wouldn't suit her fighting style as it's still a completely different weapon, but would still be cool.

You don't deploy the military to act as police, if it gets to the stage you need to call in the armed forces it's far beyond taking over a cuppa.

Enjoy what you want to enjoy. It's ok if not every one loves a movie.

Granted I genuinely think less of people who criticize TFA and will not invite them for story meeting on my next yarn. especially if it's people who were predisposed to not like it because of cannon (hint your cannon is just as valid as it was before, you are allowed to edit works in your own head) sorry you did not get to see the Hollywood version of the courtship of Princess Leia.

I also think criticizing TFA for superficial plot simularities is rediculous! Most plots follow a predictable structure, the Force is a fictional excuse for contrived plot lines. It was an amazing story filled with great characters and served as a fantastic character ark for Han Solo, who before this movie was such a Mary Sue it hurt. A very fun and awsome Mary Sue but still.

Another thing. Of course Leia and Han did not work out. Their entire relationship was hormones and bad writing. Those relationships exist in real life and they don't last.

but I don't tell any of the detractors this stuff. Because it's not a conversation worth having.

There's a third branch to "They say that they hate the direction disney (Or "the mouse") is going with Star Wars and while the prequels had their faults, they wish TFA was more like them in someway". At that point I might break and have to have a heated debate.

This is pretty helpful. Conversations I've had with people who open with the ANH line tend to focus more on superfical aspects of filmmaking or they have a chip on their shoulder about something. I have no interest in those who think doing something new is more important than doing something characterful or emotional nor do i want to be a therapist. Your flow chart shall come in handy.

Saw it again. I still liked it.

It's pretty good. Not Original Trilogy tier, but still high up there. Way better than the prequels.

If George Lucas made this movie it would have been awful (provided it wasn't made immediately following Jedi in the 80's). Thank god Disney owns Star Wars.
