Store Championship as a League prize

By CliffordHolm, in X-Wing Rules Questions

If my local gaming group wanted to use a Store Championship kit as the prize support for a League that's spread out over multiple weeks instead of as a 1 day tournament is that breaking any Fantasy Flight Organized Play rules?

I think it might, since one of the prizes is a bye at regionals. Now how much that matters is questionable. I've seen those sold on ebay, and I'm not sure if FFG has ever done anything about it or not.

But in theory yes, your store could get blacklisted by FFG for not playing a proper store championship.

The safe option would be to email FFG and ask for a clarification on the correct format for the Kit's use, and if there's any leeway for League use. That should give you a definitive yes or no.

Another thing... There are other types of kits you can get, ones intended to be used for leagues and the like.

So are you doing this because that's a kit your store is going to get, or because that's the only way you can all get together for enough games, or?

This is what season kits, winter/summer etc are for.

To host tournaments or use for leagues

The store championship kits have a bye into the Regionals, and people tend to travel to participate.

Using it for a league night excludes people who do not regularly attend

If the supplier or ffg was notified it could be bad for the store

The second hand rumor is that my local store is getting 2 Store Championship kits. (That seems odd to me, but for right now let's just say it's true.) I'm playing a small role in discussing when to hold the Store Championship event(s) while not wanting to double book a date with any store within a reasonable driving distance.

I contributed the idea of "What if one of the Store Championship kits is used as a League prize?" ... and then the other being a normal 1 day tournament.

So a part of the reason for exploring this option is so that there's not a schedule conflict with our neighbors. And I'm coming here to see if any organized play rules are being broken and what the broader community thinks about this.

If the main problem is the bye-card I'll suggest removing that in the League, and throwing it away.

Is there any additional rules literature specifically about Store Championships? I looked at the downloads page and see the Tournament Rules but don't see anything labeled "Store Championship"

I'd be surprised if they did get two.

I'd wait and see what happens

But your questions would be best answered directly through ffg, and or the distributor

Rules for the store champ come in the kit. You can email and ask but I will bet just about anything that the answer will be a no. It's been pretty apparent that one of the goals with Championships of all types is to provide a more consistent experience for players.

And that's the problem, when stores refuse to follow the clearly printed instructions that come inside the kit.

If you don't want to run the tournament as FFG stipulate, then don't apply for it.

There is no way that based on previous instruction inserts included in Store Championship kits that what is being described would be at all legal.

It is pretty much the opposite of the intention for this type of event. I would hope that FFG would not allow a shop utilizing a kit in this manner access to other kits in the future, as they are essentially rigging the event in a way.
