Spend target lock Missile

By DutchBassie, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Dear all,

I have the following question and try to be clear about the situation it occured:

I have redline with an Missile attack that requires me to spend a target lock so i can use it.

I have a target lock on ship A currently on the battlefield (Range 2 of me) but not within my firing arc.

i have a ship B currently in needed range and within my firing arc.

Is it possible to spend the target lock from ship A to activate my missile and shoot on it at ship B?

or do i need to have the target lock on the ship that i declare as my target for the missile attack?

Friendly regards Dutch player

You can only target ship A that you have locked. So you can not shoot the missile.

Your only option would be to re-acquire a new target lock on ship B. When spending a target lock to fire a missile or torpedo, it must be at the ship that was locked. Page 16 under Secondary Weapons:

The “Attack (target lock):” header indicates that the attacker must have a target lock on the defender. The attacker does not need to spend this target lock unless instructed by the Upgrade card.

Weapons with Target Lock requirements can only be used against the target they are locked on to. It wouldn't make any sense to allow you to have a TL on any ship yet still fire whatever at any ship you happen to feel like shooting at.

There is some ordnance that only has Focus requirements (and there's an EPT that does the same) and these can be fired at any ship which may be legally targeted provided the shooter has a Focus token available.
