Upcoming local tournament - only played a few games before

By lunimus, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hello! I've posted a few times as I've gotten into the game and my signature includes a list of available expansions. I'm not opposed to purchasing another one or two, but I'd like to largely rely on what I already own. A semi-local shop just announced a tournament on January 9th and I'd like to play. Seeing as how I've only flown X wings before in a real game, I might just come with a 3-4X build and fly casual, learning as I play my first tournament. What do you guys think?

I also considered purchasing a falcon expansion and running evading Corran alongside two ionned up y-wings. If I could get two TLT I would upgrade the Y's to put some damage up. On the ther hand, I don't have time to practice flying those ships and I feel comfortable with Xwings already.

Any advice for my first tournament?

Fly what you know. Play to have fun. Go for the experience. Don't worry about winning. That's my advice. Your first tournament in any game is a learning experience.

Definitely go with the ships you love and fly them for the tournament experience. If you love X-Wings as much as I do (and you have 4), I would fly something like:

Biggs Darklighter (25)
Rookie Pilot (21) x 2
Wedge Antilles (33)
X-Wing (29), R2 Astromech (1), Push the Limit (3)

Simple jousting strategy. Focus on your flying/formation to not bump yourself.

Whichever list you end up taking, just have fun and enjoy the experience!

Alright guys, here's what I think I'll fly for the tournament. I've got some games behind me flying Luke and Wedge and I love the idea of a Y-wing so I think I'll start with this list. Alternatively, I could put Garven in there with R7-T1 and go for an initiative bid. I currently have everything I'll need for this list, so I can practice with it a few times before the tournament on January 9th. I'll mostly be playing against myself for practice, with tie swarms on the other end of the table. Any ideas on how to fly this list properly? I'd Assume that I would 'tank' with the Y-wing around the edge of the asteroids while my X-wings try to get off shots on the ties. I'm very hopeful of getting someone to ion out of play or into an asteroid.

Hows it going, If i were to use the same cards I would swap Opportunist with Outmaneuver between Wedge and Luke. This is because with Wedge being the higher pilot skill their is more of a chance he shoot individuals that still have focus and evade tokens. This also sets up Luke if they are targeted to the same individual. It could either discourage someone from spending a focus for defense, or they will spend it and set up Luke for utilizing opportunist. I would put your shield upgrade on Luke because of R2D2, he has a chance to get the shield back.

With the Y-Wings lack of defense it will sure to be gone on first contact which will waste the four points. I would prefer R3A2 on the Y-Wing for stress and if you don't mind trying to shoot out of the firing arc put the title on him as well. My reasoning for wanting to do that is because an Ion Cannon definitely doesn't hit hard and can be annoying, but to add stress along with it, for me, seems to help in the fight.

Good luck in the tournament, it is the best way to learn is to just fly and have fun.

Okay,, I tested it out. The Rebel list died quick to this list. The Y wing was taken out before firing an ion cannon. Wedge was next in exchange for Dark Curse and some damage to another tie. Luke hung on a bit while the swarm gathered but ultimately died after he took out another TIE and I flew a third one off the board. Howlrunner, Mauler Mithel and Winged Gundark thought it was funny. This shows me that I don't know how to fly yet (I flew the TIE off the board trying to turn around and I flew the Y Wing straight into the jaws of a Howlrunner swarm on turn 1. I was much better with the X Wings which means I will drop the Y and practice with those... I might even go XXXX. Thanks everyone.
