So how long do we have to be careful about spoilers?

By Marinealver, in X-Wing

I figure to be especially careful until into next year but after that I think some things may slip depending on how they come up. It may not be open as long in other parts of the world as that could requires a little bit of apology. For those without a way to watch it but easy internet access I'm afraid you may be caught in a catch 22; you've got access to too much information but not the piece you are looking for most.

Two weeks is plenty of time to see the film.

If you haven't by that point then you probably don't care enough to worry about said spoilers.

If you haven't seen the film yet and do care about spoilers then avoid places like this forum. That's what I did for a few days until I saw it.

Yeah I think after a month there is just so much talk about it it is impossible to avoid spoilers. Plus even if I haven't seen it if it has been out for some time then spoilers are just something that one couldn't care for. After all everyone else already knows Darth Vader was Luke's Dad (I was born in the 80's) so by the time I was able to understand what was going on the information and jokes on TV and magazines were already out and that was before the time of the internet.

So after a month like in Mid January or even February I think we can relax on the spoilers from the movie. If you haven't seen it by then you probably already heard what went on. As it has also been mentioned the movie sort of spoils itself, the surprises really were not that much of a surprise.

People still go to 4Chan?

OP, good question. Most others... ****in' chill. He wasn't saying it was so hard or wanting to wreck it for anyone. Dude just wants to know what seems reasonable so don't leave this guy a wall of text about how "it isn't hard to be polite" because he doesn't care.

One month seems fair for relevant topics like "oh that new pilots ability makes sense because of ______. How thematic!"

Like I said, DVD/month after DVD release. Then anybody who wanted to see it, ever, will have seen it.

But I want to mention how midechlorians have spread to machines and all targeting computers have rebelled refusing to fire anything but teddy bears at the enemy.

The part where the midechlorians get into the bacta supply and start churning out force users was a twist I didn't expect. The force awakens indeed.

As long as we don't let it slip that Rey's father is Spock....

Six to eight weeks. I'd lean closer to eight given the holidays and the demands on time that family and social events create. I'm just now getting to the point where I'm having some personal time (and money) again.

Had this been released in May, I'd lean more toward four to six weeks.

I'd also like to thank the posters who avoided actual spoilers and know how to use the spoiler tags.

Normally I don't avoid spoilers before I see something. This was the first movie I actually worked on avoiding spoilers, mostly I find them and watch them first.

That being said this movie didn't impress me but it didn't disappoint me either. Honestly if I was informed by the spoilers before it wouldn't have lessen the experience because I found the movie predictable.

That being said I won't go spoiler free next movie. I will either see it on the same week it comes out or just read the spoilers then go see it. The first movie was alright but it doesn't give me confidence that the next one will be any good.

How long do you keep spoilers on spoiler tags?

Forever. That is how long.

Why? Because you don't know someone's situation. Maybe there's a 14 year old right now who loves Star Wars and just hasn't seen Episode III yet. Maybe there's a 10 year old who's just seen the prequels and is on here because he loves Star Wars and is about to go on an Original Trilogy marathon with his parents next weekend before seeing TFA. Maybe you love Star Wars but you're a Syrian refugee and you've just not had a chance to see TFA yet.

Just because it's easy for some people to run out and watch it, don't assume it's easy for others. Any length of time that one decides is "enough" time is completely arbitrary, and usually arbitrary decisions are based primarily on that person's personal ideas and situations. One person might say 4 months. Another might say 4 weeks. The next, four days. Then who is to judge the person that thought four hours was PLENTY of time to go see it, and if you hadn't then you're not a real fan who deserves to have it spoiled anyway.

Spoilers are spoilers. Regardless and no matter the time. Game of Thrones, the first book, has been out for a decade but people don't just splash what happens in that all around the world. Some people haven't watched Firefly yet. Some people haven't seen The Third Man, Citizen Kane, haven't read War of the Worlds, or Lord of the Flies, or Most Dangerous Game, ... there are thousands of stories that wouldn't have as much of a kick to them if they knew the ending before hand. I myself am interested in binging the Breaking Bad series at some point but between all my responsibilities I just haven't gotten around to it.

My kids are 3. Do I think they are going to be able to age to the point where they can understand what's happening in ESB without it being spoiled to them? Certainly not, but it would be nice.

So don't assume that everyone you speak with, or broadcast across the internet to, has the same advantages or choices that you do.

No freely spoken spoilers ever. Thank you.

That's absolutely ridiculous. Eventually something becomes common knowledge or has reached a point that the subject matter is no longer considered to be a spoiler.

If that wasn't the case almost every thread on this forum would be a spoiler, since many of the eu ships are central to either a book or a video game storyline

I think "never" isn't really going to work out, but I agree with the sentiment.

Basically, seeing the movie doesn't give you special rights or mean you've earned anything. You don't deserve to ruin it for someone else. Just use spoiler tags or don't discuss the more "shocking parts" of the movie.

Sure, its all going to come out eventually, but the fate of Luke Skywalker doesn't need to be discussed alongside the armaments of a T-70.

That's absolutely ridiculous. Eventually something becomes common knowledge or has reached a point that the subject matter is no longer considered to be a spoiler.

Being in the military, being on an oil rig, research station, working shifts 12-22 almost all days, the few free evenings booked by family...

2 weeks are not enough!

What about Santa Claus?

Around here, there's little reason to talk about the movie in most normal threads. I mean if someone wants to know what to buy, has a rules question or needs help with a list, I can't see any reason why someone would mention something that happened in the movie.

There's next to nothing that happened in the movie that actually applies to the game of X-Wing, and so technically it belongs in the off topic section. But FFG seems to be fine with discussions of lore/canon/ect... in the main form.

But there is no reason why we can't limit talk about the movie to threads about canon or the movie itself. But there will come a time, in a week or two I think where there's going to be less care taking about spoilers in those kinds of threads, and come say mid Jan, if you haven't seen the movie it's going to be on you to avoid them.

How about you use spoilers only in appropriate threads? It isn't even out in the whole world yet.

Give it at least until it has left the theaters.

It will be in theaters for months.

Your point?

Till more people have seen it.
