experimenting with TLTs

By doktorzli, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi all,

I read a lot about TLTs and squads who use them so when my 2 K-wings arrived right before a local store tournament in Belgrade, Serbia I knew I had to try them out. I'm a very green player having really started playing x-wing in november this year.

My squad was

3xY-wing gold squadron pilot with TLT and R2 astromech (3x25pts)

1x HWK with BT, Nien and Crow title

reasoning was that HWK was there to plug the R1 hole and the squad should run using 4 straights so the initial engagement happens as late as it can and the HWK gets as many focus tokens as possible. Asteroid placement was always to clutter the middle of the board and leave nice lanes all around it to navigate.

Tournament was with 14 people and I finished 3rd which was very nice. As soon as I get all the other lists I'll write a batrep and until that happens I'd like to share some of my experiences:

-There is a lot of hate pointed towards the TLTs and lame use of them, namely 4xY-W with them who just run around the board and shoot them. Well, IMHO what else could a player running all turrets do? I experimented with arc dodging and running in circles around my oponents with this list with mixed results. Almost always I had to use hwk to save Y-Wings from enemies who get too close to them.

- HWK is a superb ship. Opponents tended to ignore him and his blaster turret instead opting to attack Y-Wings and the TLT threat. It also blocks quite nicely and is capable to dish out a respectable amount of damage with the BT. Looking at my particular configuration now, I guess I could profit more from a recon specialist crew but it's a valuable lesson earned :D

- Target locks. You need to have them on your enemies, especially with TLTs. I had lots of rolls with all blanks or mixed bag of blanks/focus, TLs fixed that :D Also, I learned a lot about when to use them and when not to.

- blocking is very important, especially with aces. You can also make a nice setup with you ships blocking each other

- I profited a lot from loose formation, starting from the middle of the mat and turning left or right away from my opponent. Using 2 hard turns you get a nice little train which spreads the cover of TLTs and lets individual ships break away to block or just confuse the enemy :D

If there are some thought you'd all like to share with me I would be very happy to read them :)

I had a naughty thought, why not use ion turrets and circle the opponet off the board?

You don't sound so green as you claim since you have strong list skills, blocking ability and have even considered your asteroid placement which is something a lot of novice players don't know much about! Now you have a good list that serves you well, I would advise that now is the time to try something completely different! Get those two K wings out and try a munitions alpha strike list or some arc dodging aces to improve your formation flying. Well done on third place and keep flying!

Thanks for the replies, I might know about all the important stuff but I still lack the experience. I am getting it slowly and what I need is more live fire experience :D Thanks for the K-wing suggestion, I might try that out!

As for the IC, i had experience with the ion, maybe I should try that devious idea with 4 of them :D
