Starting Rebels, need advice.

By player1130419, in Star Wars: Armada

When I first started Armada I promised myself that I'd only play as Imperial, as I adore their iconic ship design. So far I have gathered a fleet that would make Lord Vader proud.

However, the draw of the game is tempting me to start a filthy Rebel fleet. I did sell the Rebel elements from the core set, so would buying a second core set be worth it? The extra dice are always useful, a smaller manoeuvre tool is always useful, as are the extra additions to the Imperial fleet.

So, after the Core set what would be the recommended purchases?

  1. 2 AFmk2s is more competitive. They are still the best ship in the game.
  2. CR90s are great.
  3. Neb-Bs and MC30s are less competitive, but have great cards for imperials. Don't buy another starter set - just eBay the rebel cards from the starter and buy
  4. I highly doubt you would ever need more than one MC80
  5. You can get away with one squadron pack with rebels

I would recommend:

  • 2 AFmk2s
  • 2 CR90s
  • 2 Neb-Bs
  • (eBay/trade for any rebel starter pack cards)
  • 1 MC30
  • 1 MC80
  • 1 Rebel squadron pack

When you say you sold the rebel elements, do you also mean the cards? Specifically, Luke, Dodonna, Leia, Dodonna's Pride and Redemption? If so I would look into acquiring those cards.

Otherwise, no, I wouldn't bother with a second core set, I would just get the expansions. The two ships on the rebel side in the core are better as expansions anyway, especially the nebulon which has xi7 turbolasers.

I would recommend one of everything on the rebel side, at least. You will likely wind up wanting multiples of certain ships, especially the AFMK2 and the CR90. I have 3 MC30's also, because I love the cards in that expansion and the ship itself is fun, although I've yet to bring more than 2 shrimps to the barby.

I actually think you need more squadron packs of the rebels, as certain fighters in that pack love to be spammed. Namely, A-Wings and Y-Wings. And I think you want at least 4 B's.

I think taking the one-of-everything buffet approach to buying rebel ships is great. The imps can't do it as well in my opinion. With them I'm always drawn to GSD and ISD, but the rebs? Man, the one-of fleet is payable and looks so ... rebel.

Well I'm not sure a second core is the way to go. The Nebulon B expansion packs are the only ones that come with XI7 turbolasers and Intel Officers so I would get 2 of those. I've seen them on sale for $10 US.

Then I would say go with what your play style suits. MC-80 and AF2 are broadside ships that compliment each other nicely while MC-30 and CR90B are super fun if you like slashing with a little shake n bake.

If you want to table a solid rebel list and price is no object I would say Ackbar in a MC-80 (Home One) with 2 AF2s and sprinkle squadrons to taste.

Ha - well said, mad!

Actually, good point. I forgot he wouldn't have the X-wings from the starter set. 2 squadron packs is probably best then. There is no way that you can get away with having less than 4 X-wings.

If replacement Alliance cards are needed I have spare cards that are just sitting in a ziplock bag in a drawer (Bought 2 of the core box)

  • 2 AFmk2s is more competitive. They are a strong and we'll balanced ship when used correctly.
  • CR90s are great.
  • Neb-Bs and MC30s amazing when used right, and the Neb-B titles are great!
  • You will want more than one MC80 if you want a support fleet
  • You will love B-Wings when you get used to their play style
I would recommend:

  • 2 AFmk2s
  • 2 CR90s
  • 2 Neb-Bs
  • 1 MC30
  • 1 MC80
  • 2-3 Rebel squadron pack

I have a Rule for purchases which goes like this,

Ships that retail for 00.00 - 19.99 buy 3 of them

Ships that retail for 20.00 - 39.99 buy 2 of them

Ships that retail for 40.00 and up buy 1 of them

With some exceptions (1 MC80 is enough). Also I purchased 4 squad of fighters for each rebel and imps, this has worked out well at 400 points.
