Spoiler Alert: A re-hashed plot and other problems with TFA

By Stormtrooper721, in X-Wing

The thing that makes me want to hate TFA even though it was a great film are these teenage egelords who say 'yeah the OT wasn't that good, if it were out today it's be 3/5 tops meh.'

I get it, some people hate TFA because they are OT purists and hate change. But that doesn't mean you need to earn cool points by saying 'the OT was boring, there's just some old guy fighting some dumb robot guy with bad fight choreography'.

Okay.... I'll bite.... Rey didn't use the force to try to get more food for her salvaged junk. She didn't start using the force until she saw Kylo doing stuff. I don't think she's a Mary Sue, she's just imminently trainable, as were Anakin and Luke. I do think she has a better "beginner's mind" than either because she was struggling just to survive, not whining about not being allowed to go to the Toshi Station Wal-mart or building droids in her spare time... maybe that gives her an edge in absorbing training from any source she can find, even a dark one.

I don't think that alien dude could have had the force used on him anyway... He obviously knew waaaaay more than he was letting on. I suspect we'll revisit Jakku at some point and find out about his role. Especially if he thinks the falcon is still his.

Also I feel like Rey was trained at an early age, and then had her mind wiped. I do agree she could have figured out how to get into peoples heads due to her encounter with Kylo, but I think she is a bit more experienced in the force than what we were shown.

I really felt the pacing was rushed. It never seemed to give you enough time to really get the impact of a scene before jumping to the next.

And I hated the super weapon. First off, when Alderaan was popped, when had Leia right there to give us a reason to care, to feel anguish. TFA gives us multiple planets, that we've never heard of or seen before and have no emotional investment in get crushed at the same time. Secondly, even when Yavin was under threat, it had meaning, because we'd already seen the ruthless evil of the Empire, and it was the intensity of the space battle and the fight to destroy the Death Star before the heroes got wiped out.

This just felt empty by comparison.

This attack didn't serve the same purpose. Starkiller destroying many planets was not for us to care and have pity but for the setting of the galaxy. Now we know that the New Republic is crippled. It sets the Resistance as the last line of defense against the New Order.

While it doesn't have the same impact as when Alderaan got destroyed, it sets the scene for Episode 8+. What we don't really know though, is how much the New Order is crippled now that Starkiller is destroyed.

How do we know the Republic is crippled? Were the planets destroyed vital? Hell if I know.

Well then you obviously weren't paying any attention.

Their first and only shot was at The Republic's Senate.

The Heart of The Republic.

The fact that the Hosnian system was the capital of the Republic and had all of the Senate there makes it pretty vital I would say. They were going for a crippling blow.

So? Just build another senate building and elect new senators (it's not like they don't get replaced every 4-8 years anyway) ;)

On the other hand, there is only one supreme leader (yeah right) snoke (bwhahaha!)

He falls, and his regime falls with him (I guess) :D

For those of you who feel that this was "just a copy of A New Hope", I suggest you watch this video:

Those who say TFA is a copy of a new hope are doing it a disservice: TFA is a copy of most of the OT. ;)

So were you just not in the theater when Space Hitler was leading the Nuremberg Rally? Because he makes it pretty explicit what the consequences of the weapon's use are going to be.

Also SW was never that Original if you look at the story:

Young hero with magic sword guided by old wise mentor.: Arthurian legends.

A duel between father and son, where only the father knows they are related: The lay of Hildebrand.

So Corusant is gone then?

No,no, it's the NEW republic capital, not the OLD repubic capital. Some Hosana place.

Coruscant is in the Corusca sector.

Starkiller base destroyed the Hosnian system.

The galactic senate had moved their capital to Hosnian Prime.

omfg

So Corusant is gone then?

According to the Visual Dictionary, the New Republic moved the central government off of Coruscant in a "We're not the Empire or a rehash of the stagnant Old Republic" publicity move. The Hosnian system (the one what got blown up) was the current seat of galactic power. I have doubts as to if they'll revisit Coruscant, given TFA's willingness to introduce new planets as proxies for older ones (D'Qar and Jakku being Yavin 4/Tatooine expies specifically

This brings up an interesting point- Star Wars (particularly the OT) has always been a pastiche of genres and tributes, from eastern and western mythology, to samurai and western flicks, to Flash Gordon serials- sometimes even shot-for-shot. With the prequels, even by Lucas's own admission, we saw a mirroring of aspects of the original trilogy, with many of the same beats being repeated (e.g. Anakin and Luke both losing their hands near the end of their second episodes; a rag-tag group of fighters taking down a seemingly-indomitable space fortress at the climax of the first episode; the parallels between the pristine cities of Kamino and Bespin; the Fetts; the Jedi training orbs; the recurrence of Tatooine; etc, etc.). Plenty of criticism has been levied at TFA for rehashing major components of the OT's plot (both episodic and overarching)- so has the pan-mythology of Star Wars become a self-consuming ouroboros? Or has TFA recontextualized and renewed the elements it uses?

So? Just build another senate building and elect new senators (it's not like they don't get replaced every 4-8 years anyway) ;)

I mean, think of what a blow it would be to the US, for instance, if the Senate, House of Representatives, President, Cabinet, and Supreme Court were all wiped out at once. Idk how the New Republic is organized, but I'd assume that's the rough equivalent. The heart of galactic government has been torn out in an instant, that's pretty major (though it would have been nice to... SEE this government before it was destroyed, maybe clarify its relationship to the Resistance a little more (a piece of background I find pretty interesting). I hate to say it, but this might be one instance where seeing some gaudy alien senators pontificate on floating disks might actually have been beneficial)

For those of you who feel that this was "just a copy of A New Hope", I suggest you watch this video:

...

Force Awakens is more original than THAT, definately.

Original lol

Hate to break it to you but there was no original scene or plot in the new movie. Not saying that the first movie was original hence your video, but people and Star Wars fans did not want to see original. They wanted to see Star Wars the first 3 movies that were not the prequels. To everyone's delight they saw just that and nothing more.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxsx7VKzS0w

but much like the past movie and even looking at Mr Plinkets review of Star Trek (2009) original has risks and doesn't come out with good results that often. So why try to make something original and end up with another prequel mess. Most people don't want originality, they want entertainment.

What does it take to please you guys

I mean of all the things that could have been explained more in depth, the ramifications of Starkiller Base's usage is not really one if them. They mention specifically thier target and what it's destruction would mean. And then later the Resistance specifically mentions the name of the system and the fact that the Republic fleet is not going to be able to assist them. That was all there for you if you paid attention.

The best film of the year is Mad Max.

You misspelled 'Kingsman.'

The best film of the year is Mad Max.

You'd have to be completely disconnected from reality to think otherwise. You'd basically be a sub-human, and would do the world a favor by self immolating.

This isn't opinion, it is fact, verified by film scientists.

Star Wars was pretty good too.

agreed, Mad Max Fury Road is better than Star Wars the Force Awakens when competing for movie of the year.

That was an awwweeeesoooooome movie!

Uh, yep. Basically.

That was quite important.

Ngl though, I cringed/laughed when Hux said "We will destroy the government that supports the Resistance... the Republic." It was such a clumsy, exposition-y line, as if Snoke needed to be reminded of what the Republic was.

If you dont believe the Martian is the best movie this year, I have no faith in humanity anymore.

The Mark Millar + Matthew Vaughn ongoing collaboration is the worst thing to happen to the film industry. Ever.

But I mean, at least he's not ruining Marvel anymore, so there's that.
