Spoiler Alert: A re-hashed plot and other problems with TFA

By Stormtrooper721, in X-Wing

I've found that I generally agree with the posters I used to agree with on various new forms of Star Wars and I mostly disagree with those I previously disagreed with on new Star Wars stuff.

For me, I very much enjoyed the new movie. Starkiller base is the only thing I would personally remove, it's just unnecessary, but it wasn't the focus and didn't really detract from the movie.

I'm very happy that, to me, the joy of watching and wanting more Star Wars has returned and I feel bad for those that don't get that out of it.

I do draw the line at TFA "killing Star Wars" though. This can't be possible in a world where Attack of the Clones exists.

Starkiller base didn't need to be in it. The film was strong enough for the base to have been almost anything else. The new trunch run was the only thing I didn't like of the film.

Yeah basically. Trade giant gun planet with "shipyard building crazy FO super star destroyers" or something scary but not a big gun and the rest plays out the same anyways but with less people really mad about it online.

I think they could (literally) have had Chuck Norris as their superweapon and it would have caused less outrage online.

With all this talk of Mad Max, I wanna see Storm troopers vs Warboys!

WITNESS THIS!

Star wars or mad max? Why not both?

Best movie ever, Yah?

somebody

make

:D

pure genius, thx for sharing that :D

He would have taken out a LOT more planets with a single round-house than their Death Star Mk III.

I know that pic is photoshoped because he has a black glove (code for missing hand) and Norris couldn't lose a hand. The lightsaber crystal would shatter on contact with his skin.

Just saying.

Starkiller base did exactly what it was meant to do.

The First Order did not lose.

StarKiller base was acceptable losses. Next movie is gonna show FO on the offensive controlling half the Galaxy with the Resistence scrambling to get enough ships and man power.

According to an interview with the screen writer they're going "weird" with EP 8.

Going "weird" in Episode 8???? Wait.....I know who Supreme Leader Snoke is!!!! It's this guy:

After all, he's been Darkseid, so why not the leader of the First Order....

I disagree, while they may have destroyed the Senate and a large portion of the Republic Fleet by not also destroying the Resistance they've legitimized it's cause.

The Republic was unwilling to act against the FO and essentially banished Leia as a relic, but now she's been proven completely correct. Whatever is left of the Republic military will flock to the Resistance banner, along with a lot of systems. Leia has immediately gained back all of her credibility and standing, now even hardliners FO appeasers would be hard pressed to not support her.

I think the subsequent fight between Resistance and FO will be on much more even footing now that the curtain of the FO has been pulled back.

In essence I think the FO Pearl Harbored themselves.

The people of the Republic should be upset with their leaders for funding a terrorist organization that incited another war.

Oh goddammit! JJ is gonna do that alternate universe thing from star trek isn't he?

Or will it be directed by David Cronenberg and star, Johnny Depp? :)

JJ already has done the alternate universe in Star Wars like he did in Star Trek when he wiped out all the Star Wars lore from previous novels and comics. He could have easily come up with a great story that kept in line with the beloved X-Wing series, Thrawn trilogy, and Jedi novels, but he simply refused to. He completely disrespected a lot of authors who took great pride in their work and fans who greatly loved those books. The Thrawn trilogy really rebooted the Star Wars universe decades ago and sparked great interest in Star Wars. Why wipe it out? I suspect pure arrogance, which is why I have a hard time respecting JJ Abrams' work - because he does not respect the work of others. Both in Star Trek and Star Wars he could have very easily paid homage to those writers, authors, and comic book creators and written great in-universe movies.

Instead, he has to make such big changes that alternate universes (or "Legends" in Star Wars) have to be created to explain such complete changes to the universe have been made. I find it hard to stomach JJ Abrams' new Star Trek and Star Wars universes because they don't pay homage to the previous canon and instead create a whole new canon so JJ Abrams can have new fans bow down and pay homage to him.

I don't buy the idiotic line that he "saved" the Star Trek universe or Star Wars franchise. I have been reading Star Wars comics and novels and going to comic cons for years and fandom for both has continued to grow stronger. It was not necessary to wipe out previous canon to make a good movie. Those were not obstacles but building blocks for greater movies than the crap he gave us instead.

History is much like an endless waltz. The three beats of war, peace and revolution continue on forever.

I like that the plot is so similar to 4. It's history in a lot of ways repeating itself, even in the EU canon this is seen to happen constantly. In my mind 7 is a near perfect Star Wars film because of it's flaws.

History is much like an endless waltz.

Now I wanna go watch Gundam. ;)

Ok tihird time's the charm. Now for ep VIII can we please get something else that's not a spheroid battlestation with a doomsday-laser?

Endless Waltz TOTALLY qualifies as a christmas movie.

I was thinking: 'Nothing ends, Adrian. Nothing ever ends.'

Definitely same principle.

BKL is that you?

Disney decided to dump the EU and it's several confusing layers of canonicity into 'Legends' so that future releases could pick and choose what they want but only be beholden to only the releases since 2012 or so. JJ was following the policy that was already in place. And I think it was the right way to go, even if some plot lines were borrowed.

Thrawn was ok but that trilogy was a long time ago and it was only the first release of the 'EU' era of the 90s and 00s. It wasn't the best (TIE Fighter was...forever and ever GUNBOAT!) but it was pretty good and better than what came after for sure. Brian Daly's Han Solo stories were still better, straight outta the early 80s, and totally captures the SW and pulp feeling without running hundreds of pages per novel. And why don't people remember the old Marvel comics and Droids cartoon? The 'EU' started way before Thrawn...although I wish Splinter of the Minds Eye was made into a TV special instead of the Holiday Special...ugh.
