Composite-Beam Laser Upgrade for B-Wing

By Found Myself Floating Home, in X-Wing Rules Questions

My son and I were imagining a weapon card that would give the B-wing the nifty composite beam laser you see in the Star Wars Rebels cartoon episode. Wookiepedia implies that the weapon was designed as a capital-ship killer, so it isn't going to be used to swat at Tie Fighters. Here's what we came up with:

Composite-Beam Laser

Cannon Upgrade

6 Attack Dice

Range 2-3 Only

If you equip the CBL, you cannot equip any other secondary weapons (no torpedoes). The CBL can only target Large and Huge Ships.

I was also thinking about limiting the number of shots to 2 or 3, but I think that might not be necessary. Obviously, the card is weighted for Epic play or if you knew you were going to go up against Large ships.

It would be fun to punch holes in all those shiny new Gozanti cruisers. ;)

6 dice...for how many points? Seems a bit excessive. I could see it for huge ships only and since its a prototype it could have a component like the new cloaking device - maybe role an attack die before each attack. On a hit, discard this card. Or, something to that effect.

Ouch. That's somewhat of a killer weapon as written. For that kind of weapon, I'd add "Unique", make it cost about 10 points, you lose your next attack, and you need a TL to fire it. Dropping an otherwise unrestricted 6-dice attack into something that basically has no defense would help encourage no one to take Huge ships into an Epic match, for fear of being blown up in one or two shots.

I think Unique makes sense, as the weapon only seems to appear on the prototype.

Is 6 dice really too much? 5 dice attacks seem to happen with a fair amount of regularity in normal play.

I think I'll have to do some play testing to see how powerful it really is.

They shouldn't be. There really aren't that many ways of getting up to five dice. Four, sure, but five takes either a Phantom at close range or some very expensive upgrades (Expose and Proton Rockets being the main ways) or unique pilots (e.g. talonbane).

It's a fine idea, but it's just never going to be easy to balance in any way shape or form. Fine for a mission, maybe, but for a dogfight... difficult. For it to do what it needs to (disable a huge ship in one shot) it would need to be rolling probably 7 or 8 dice, or having some major dice modification built in to give it crits.

Yes, 6 dice is too much.

Add Jan in her HWK to give an extra attack die, give the B-Wing pilot Expose, or give it to Keyan with PtL/SoT/Opportunist and his stress>Focus ability, and now it can be a 7- or 8-dice attack. Put Ezra on the stressed B-Wing and you've now got a Focus>Crit too.

If I even thought someone was going to bring this to an Epic match, for 296 points I'd just bring 12 Academy TIE pilots, and 10 TIE/fo Epsilon and bore you to death with setting of my dials. Or 12 Gold Squadron Y-Wings all with TLT and bore you to oblivion with 72 attack dice rolls as soon as you're in range.

I agree about making it a one shot use. Maybe restricted to Huge Ship only with a target lock (as stated earlier)

There are too many things different about the B-wing prototype to be fixed with a simple upgrade card. To stay in sync with what was shown on SW REBELS you'll have to add the following:

Add a turret

Add the secondary weapon to the turret mount

Add a crew

A pilot skilled enough to handle this beast.

Finally, add a unique title card... •Bladewing (10)/ Title: Required PS(7+) B-Wing only.

Add a (crew) to upgrade track. Secondary weapon (cannon) may attack targets outside of forward arc. Composite-laser: When attacking, add primary and secondary (cannon) together as a single attack. After attack is done, roll a single combat die any result other than "blank" will disable ALL upgrade slots on fighter for remainder of battle.

[Wording is a bit long but should be compressed enough to fit on two title cards, like that shown for GHOST/PHANTOM]

EDIT:You then add a new (Hera) pilot card, with her ability, for the B-Wing

Add in Jan ors and Biggs and I'd say you just broke the game

Epic ships die easily enough from focus fire

Last thing is a ship that roll 6 dice is needed

Hera in a Bwing with HLC.

I can see it working like ordnance, being one use only. In the series it's a temperamental prototype that requires large amounts of power to fire.

I would love to see Hera pilot one of these though with a repaint and title card.

To fire this weapon, reduce your agility to 0 for the rest of the round. This weapon can only bevused by pilot skill 7 or higher.

Expose on a Bwing?

I prefer Keyan with Opportunist and HLC. Huge ships dont get focus or evade tokens, so that's 5 dice with focus.
