So I'm an X-Wing player now...what should I get?

By Weirdo, in X-Wing

Been interested in this game for a long time, and yesterday my wife took the plunge for me, giving me several TIEs(Interceptor, Defender, and Punisher) for Christmas. I figure once I get a core set, I'll have a fairly decent Imperial squadron going, and all will be as it should be.

But every Imperial squadron needs Rebel scum to beat up on, and one X-Wing does not suitable opposition make. My budget is limited, so what would you recommend as a bare-bones rebel fleet, so I can practice when not at a game store?

Thanks!

Hi there and welcome!

Still pretty new myself, but I would recommend getting a second X-Wing and then maybe the Falcon. I mean, it's the Millenium Falcon, you're probably going to get it anyway right? Gives you a few decent builds and you get a good mix of jousters and turrets to play against.

There are so many potential builds of course it's really hard to say. But that would be a good starting point, and after you play a few games you'll have a good idea what you may want to get next to expand on the Imperial and Rebel options.

the b-wing expansion is the single most economical rebel pack. It comes playable right out the box as either a naked PS 2 or a fire control system PS 2

alternatively, you could jump on the TLT bandwagon with the lovely K-wing or two and a Y

best thing to do if you're not looking to be ultra competitive (re: store championship+) with a faction is buy the ships and then proxy the upgrade cards rather than giving yourself a headache. In that case, you can give yourself the Heaver special with two y-wings, a z-95 and the core set t-70

Focus on rebls who have resources you need. Push the limit In the Awing pack goes wonderfuly with intercepters, and until the new titles hit the best defender builds use Heavy Lasers, out of the yt2400 kit.

If you're fine with proxying cards to test abilities and want just a few Rebel ships, I'd pick up Rebel Aces and a Most Wanted pack. Most Wanted is Scum but the 2 x Z's and Y are Rebel ships as well, and with an A, B, X, Y, and two Z's you'll have some good opposition options. Plus if you decide to fly scum you'll be ready for that as well.

Rebel Aces and a Falcon - if you can squeeze a Y-wing into the budget that'll give you all of the iconic rebel ships to play with.

Focus on rebls who have resources you need.

Which rebels have the resources I need? For that matter, what are the resources I need? Remember, I don't even have the rules yet, just a trio of sweet TIEs.

Heavy Laser Cannon (HLC) comes with the B-Wing too, I believe, if OP wants a cheaper option.

Anyway, hello and welcome to the game, and the community. I'm sure you'll get great enjoyment out of both! There've been some great suggestions here, so I'd like to add that if you're looking to get any other people into the game by playing with you, it's a good idea to get very iconic rebel ships. That way anyone who plays with you can get a real feel for the genuine Imperial vs. Rebel experience. To that effect, the B-Wing, Y-Wing, and Millennium Falcon are all excellent choices.

Also, as a new player, you'll likely get great use out of the following link:

these various strategy videos are greatly insightful and have served many X-Wing players on their early road to greatness. Enjoy X-Wing! (and congratulations for joining the proper side in this conflict. Long live the Emperor!)

A single Rebel Aces pack in addition to either core set will get you a functional 100 point Rebel list, better if you're willing to proxy.

If you haven't already check out the useful links sticky. In particular check out the new player list guide. Gives you lots of ideas and a bunch of squad builds to try. I like that it breaks it down the lists by approximate difficulty of using them.

The Xwing Wikia site mentioned lists all products with pictures of the upgrades. You can see what comes with each model and if you want, print some upgrades to proxy until you get the real ones.

One thing that helped me was the quick start list. If provides a guide of what makes up a lot of competitive lists to help you play better. Learning how lots of ship can move is a big help when you are running a ship or playing against it. Being able to predict where your opponent will move is an asset in this game.

Rebel Aces and then Most Wanted.

Ah, screw it. Get 2 of everything. You will do so anyway, might as well start now ;)

Rebel Aces and Falcon would provide a good variety of opponents that would play very differently than the ships you have.

Like everyone else I will recommend rebel aces.

I also recommend the TFA core set as it has updated rulebooks and extra stuff if you want a two player collection.

IMHO and YMMV... Pick up a TFA (Blue Logo not Red) for Poe then look for a T70/XWing booster for the other named pilot. Next look for a Rebel Aces Pack to get an AWing and BWing that will give you 4 Rebel Ships with some nice options. Eventually you might want to pick up a AWing and BWing for the generic pilots but that is a down the road decision.

Now if your more an Original Trilogy person instead of the Blue Logo pick up the Red Logo starter for Luke Biggs and R2D2 then grab an Original T65 XWing booster for Wedge. Just be aware that the original Start may not have the updated rule booklet and the older Damage Deck. Eventually you are going to want a second start so you can loanout a Damage Deck.

Buy ships you like from the movies, games, etc.

Competitive play is all very well but most likely the vast majority of your games, especially for the next year or so will be casual. Playing stuff you like is as important as playing stuff at the top of the mountain, if not more so.

I would reccomend a falcon to start along with the blue core set. You can do a solid expensive Poe and Fat Han build. This is relatively simple to fly for new players, and is straight out of the movie to get your friends interested in playing against you. Just proxy the upgrade cards you dont have via one of the free online list builder websites.

The Ghost is coming in a couple months, and that will give you a very competitive Rebel list, with one purchase! I'm predominately Empire, but I fully plan on being a Ghost Fanboi for a while when it releases.

Otherwise, yeah a Falcon and Poe, or grab an E-Wing and have Han and Horn. Those are fun lists. Heck, even Han with just a couple Rookie X-Wings is pretty decent.

K-Wings are fun, and grab a Punisher for your Empire collection.

And, tbh, you'll eventually wind up with one of everything anyway... ;)

K wing and a Y.

Falcon.

Add an A or a Z at a later time.

Say goodbye to your savings.

Welcome recruit to the imperial navy, report to the quartermaster to buy 12 of everything go big or go home to your dust farm.

Focus on rebls who have resources you need.

Imperial aces is a must.

Just accept you will eventually own multiples of everything.

One? You mean 2 or 3 or 4 or 8 right?

OP good advice in this thread. Don't worry you really don't need to buy much to have fun.
