Best skirmish lists from 1 base set?

By Sixter, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

I just got into Imperial Assault, mainly for the campaign but I figure I will skirmish some eventually. I have a bunch of the old WotC minis which I will probaly use in place of the tokens, so I´m in no hurry to buy the extra packs for the figures.

What are the most usable skirmish lists you can make from just a single base set?

p.s. I did pick up the Twin Shadows expansion since it´s campaign oriented. Are there any good skirmish additions there?

Welcome the the game, I hope you do get into skirmish, it's what I love most about the game.

You have lots of options out the main box and twin shadows.

When making a skirmish list, I follow a couple of themes: high amount of activations (6-7 ideally)'and at least 4 of those are decent fighters.

Lists with Vader in are generally good if you can move him around before his turn to go (note imperial officers have been changed recently, check the faq) Royl guards (again they were changed in the faq) are still good, especially when guarding a powerhouse like Vader.

Heavy stormtroopers are great from twin shadows, I'd take them over normal stormtroopers if I had the points. Tuskens are ok, and the elite ones are probably your only choice, I was always uninspired by regular ones...

Rebels are probably going to be the (best) list at the current state of the meta, dudes like Gideon, C3PO, Diala, Fenn, Biv, Elite rebel troopers, Elite Sabs (even after the change- see FAQs) are all good, especially those giving out focus tokens (which allow an extra green die to add to their pool)

Unfortunately Scum is not too good unless you run one big hitter like Boba with some imperial friends, a mono Scum list can't hold its own vs Rebals/Imperials yet.

I have everything they have released so far (minus the general Weiss pack).

If you're building a skirmish list from a single copy of the core set plus Twin Shadows, you probably want to go with an Imperial list. Rebels rely a lot on generics that don't come with the big boxes, and Mercenaries are pretty thin on options.

For what you have, I'd probably go with something like:

  • Darth Vader
  • Heavy Stormtroopers
  • Imperial Officer
  • Imperial Officer
  • Stormtroopers
  • Stormtroopers

Vader is obviously the centerpiece of the list, able to quickly eliminate targets, and Brutality forces opponents to space out their figures if he is in the neighborhood. The troopers can pile up a fair amount of damage, as well, and they can screen for Vader in the early game, keeping opponents from focusing attacks on him. The officers are cheap and can help get Vader or the Heavy Stormtroopers into position faster. It isn't a great list, but I think you could do a lot worse.

You may wish to swap out one of the trooper groups and an officer for a group of Royal Guards. Despite the recent nerf, they're still a solid mid-range option with reach and the ability to stun.

I've played Vaders Fist (a variant of this squad) quite a bit at first. And yes, the Royal Guards were solid attackers, but their primary role in the squad was for Protector on Vader. So I'd definitely recommend putting a RG in there. Drop a group of Reg Stormies and an Officer.

That will make for a solid squad.

I just discovered the Vader's fist list on my own while building lists, and it's still quite strong, haven't beaten it yet in solitaire with my other lists that use expansions.

* Darth Vader

* stormtrooper

* stormtrooper

* probe droid

* probe droid

* imperial officer
