Even Aces can learn from Veterans!

By Sonikgav, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Been theory-building and a little proxy testing for the upcoming Imperial Veteran release.

Darth Vader - TIE Advanced (34)

- Engine Upgrade

- TIE/x1

- Advanced Targeting Computer

Soontier Fel - TIE Interceptor (35)

- Push the Limit

- Autothrusters

- Royal Guard TIE

- Stealth Device

Toman Bren - TIE Bomber (31)

- Lightning Reflexes

- Twin Ion Engine Mk. II

- TIE Shuttle

- Mara Jade

- Tactician

Total - 100

Vader feels like he is missing something, maybe an EPT but having him and Soontir flying around, while Bren makes a complete pest of himself is fun. So far, noone has expected a dumpy old Bomber to be pulling 1K's or even 1S-loops to keep him in range of a swarm, while still getting his action to stress multiple targets at multiple ranges which gives my two Dogfighters so much more freedom. His mobility, especially considering his Barrel Roll options too make him (i think) one of the best Arc Dodgers out there because he has such a unique dial with the combo of a re-useable Lighting Reflexes and the Mk 2 engine.

seems like a big waste of Bren, who is ultimately just a crappy 2-dice ship without special modifiers in that get-up

I think that's the wrong build for Tomax - Try this...

Tomax Bren (Once per round, after you discard an Elite Upgrade card, flip that card faceup.) (38 Points)

  • Base Pilot (24)
  • Lightning Reflexes (1)
  • Extra Munitions (2)
  • Munitions Failsafe (1)
  • XX-23 S-thread Tracers (1)
  • Homing Missiles (5)
  • Cluster Mines (4)

I would personal fly that with...

  • Omega Leader + Comm Relay, Juke (26 Points)
  • Vader + Title, Expert Handling (or Lone Wolf or Predator), Engine Upgrade (or Stealth Device), ATC (36 Points)

Loading Tomax (or any bomber) with a good mix of utility munitions and then having the Extra Munitions and Munitions Failsafe upgrades gives you a lot of power. Technically that list above still has room for a Torpedo slot...

Tracers can help avoid Vader being without a TL and do all sorts of nasty things when combined with Omega Leader. It's not always the best option - but it's utility in a hard to deal with format.

I think its an interesting idea. Tomax shuts down your opponent's ability to chase your aces, allowing them the freedom to get on 6s and take unanswerable shots. However, there is no synergy between tactician and mara jade. I would be tempted to drop Tactician entirely to get something good on Vader. Crack shot or perhaps Veteran instincts come to mind. Crack shot is particularly good here since your list is light on firepower as is. Even if you don't want to drop tactician, I would seriously consider ditching the stealth device on Fel for a target computer so that you can get crack shot on Vader. Also, the TC gives Fel extra punch, particularly if he's range 1 behind his target...

Or, if you're willing to drop tactician and take target comp, you have enough room for predator on Vader which is even better in the long game...

Drop Tactition for Intel Agent and add Crack Shot on Vader.
