Long Range Miranda

By Phoenix8472, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Looking at building lists around the latest releases, I haven't yet spotted any threads discussing the benefits of Long Range Sensors on Miranda.

My current thinking would be to load her up with something like Homing Missile, with possibly extra munitions (and the standard TLT)

Turn one - target lock with LRS, fly into range

Turn two - Fly closer, Focus action then strike with Homing Missiles, using Miranda's ability for a five dice Homing missile that can't be evaded with Focus/TL if needed

Turn three - If your opponent was turned into red mist you SLAM away to get into Long Range again or use the TLT + Target Lock to finish the job. (Remember Homing missiles don't spend the target lock when they fire)

As with all alpha strikes, this would be excellent against low ship count lists, obviously weak to a swarm but then the TLT can help against that.

My problem is that it makes Miranda expensive and hasn't improved her defensively. (Before anyone says, C3P0 crew would be lovely but I don't have one!)

What else would you add to the list? More missile boats? A support Roark HWK to shoot at PS12?

Jan Ors could make that a 6 dice attack. Whew, ain't nobody walking that off cept a pancake

Just re-read Homing Missiles. It says you can't spend evade tokens but that means you can still evade it with dice results, right? So now I just need a way to reduce my target's agility...

I wouldn't worry too much about target agility. 5 re-rolled, focused dice are going to ruin a lot of high AGI ships, even if it doesn't happen to kill them. Without 3PO, Chewbacca is an excellent defensive crew. He is better against burst damage (Miranda can have trouble with this) and can powered ability if you're got no shields but want to take someone down.

Also remember that offense generates it's own defense. Miranda is PS8, so ships that can kill her before she fires are not doing so en mass. Against lower PS squads that can really hammer her down, she can kill some stuff in the opening engagement with a Homing Missile. That helps.

I just got a K-Wing in the other day. I'm really looking forward to trying some of this out! :D

So what about this?

K-Wing: · Miranda Doni (29)

Extra Munitions (2)

Homing Missiles (5)

Twin Laser Turret (6)

Long-Range Scanners (0)

K-Wing: Warden Squadron Pilot (23)

Twin Laser Turret (6)

Tactician (2)

Y-Wing: Gold Squadron Pilot (18)

Twin Laser Turret (6)

· R3-A2 (2)

BTL-A4 Y-Wing (0)

Use Miranda to missile people into the ground as mentioned above and pin everyone else down till she can get to them. Pick off last hp off struggling ships with tlts and mop up stragglers. Thoughts? Would this be more or less effecting than the triple K worlds list below.

K-Wing: Warden Squadron Pilot (23)

Twin Laser Turret (6)

Tactician (2)

It's difficult to compare those lists, because this tactician K-wings are not easy to fly, at least for me. If you're going for an alpha strike hit and run list, I kind of like the idea of doubling down on the idea. You could drop extra munitions and tactician and put a Concussion Missile with LRS on the Warden.

You don't get a followup missile shot from Miranda, but you do get two big early shots.

Miranda wants Advanced SLAM if she's got Long-Range Scanners so she can SLAM the heck out of there and pick up a Target Lock.

Advaned SLAM and Long-Range Scanners are both modifications, so you can't take them both.

check out the imperial veterns expansion pack (qued for release first quarter of 2015)

proxy this:

for your long range Miranda

gives you a lock to prepare for a fully modified 5-dice homing missile; which hurts like the goddamnit dickens. If you get those 5 hits (very easy with focus + TL), even Stealth Device Soontir is guaranteed to take at least 1 damage

Good point. Forget I said anything. :P

That's exactly the card we are talking about man.

Just thinking about adding Weapon Engineer to this idea.

TWO target locks on the first turn at 3+ range just seems ridiculous.

Has anyone used weapon engineer to any success?

I don't think it adds anything significant at all and you'd have to find 2 points for it somewhere. I'll be running this list hopefully this week and hopefully I let ya know how it goes.

You can also use Miranda's ability defensively if need be.

So I went and looked through the stats for worlds 2015 and the most common ship by points by far was the y wing. Obviously the scum and rebel y wings with tlt etc. Their total showing was 28.37% of the field.

When facing the above listed long range Miranda with focus + TL a ship (like the y wing) with 1 Agi and no focus would be taking 4-5 dmg 87.5% of the time.

That's around 50% of the y wings hp in one shot. With extra munitions she can do it twice and still have a tlt after that whilst probably getting target locks before she comes in. Thoughts?

Against the 2nd most common ship, the IG-88, at 17.12% of the field with 3 Agi, auto thrusters and a focus you are looking at 2-3 dmg 76.4% of the time.
