TIE/fo All-Stars

By Magnus Grendel, in X-Wing Squad Lists

...So.

We now know all the TIE/fo unique pilots, and knowing is half the battle*.

Trying to make a TIE/fo All-Stars list is rather harder than the old TIE/ln All-stars, because you can't fit all of them in a squad (well, you could before the carrier arrived, anyway).

As a starting, simple force:

  • Omega Leader, Juke, Comms Relay
  • Omega Ace, Push The Limit, Comms Relay
  • Zeta Leader, Wired, Weapons Guidance
  • Zeta Ace, Push The Limit, Engine Upgrade

I don't know how this will work in practice. All of them are nice dogfighters, but I'm worried I lack raw firepower - Theoretically I should be able to take down a tanky big ship by Zeta Leader and Omega Leader blowing through the shields, then stacking up the criticals with Omega Ace, for example, but I'm cautious that dirty tricks aside it is just four TIE fighters with delusions of grandeur.

Zeta Ace floats like a butterfly but stings like a butterfly too.

Anyone had any experience with the squad?

Alternatively, would the Epsilon pilots do any more good? Epsilon Leader seems a good natural pair to Push The Limit on Omega Ace (and Leader, I guess) and Epsilon Ace.... isn't actually that powerful without an EPT, but is probably very annoying for his points.

  • Omega Leader, Push The Limit, Comms Relay
  • Omega Ace, Push The Limit, Comms Relay
  • Epsilon Leader, Comms Relay
  • Epsilon Ace, Comms Relay, Engine Upgrade

*The other half being split equally between red and green lasers

TIE/ln All Stars was pretty hard because Winged Gundark wasn't a star.

He isn't, but he's still not bad for his points. Even if his pilot ability never triggers, a PS5 TIE fighter isn't a bad thing.

These days, though, Chaser is probably a better pick - pairing well with Night Beast for a pair of very cheap TIE fighters with free focus tokens.

Wired is surprisingly underwhelming and bleh

3 points for Wired + WG could be Predator, which is incredibly effective on Zeta L

EU on Zeta A is overkill. Juke + Relay works just fine, or just PTL by itself. In fact, every ept FO apart from Zeta L (predator) and Omega A (PTL) benefits immensely from the Juke + Relay combo

any leftover points should be poured into relays, which are refillable shield upgrades even when not enabling Juke

firepower isn't the issue (if Juke or Predator Zeta L is involved) as much as four health per ship

Wired is good on Zeta leader (though i prefer juke) and he should ALWAYS get comms over WG.

i think for an all star list you need at least 5 ties to be effective:

Aces high: Zeta leader +Juke+comms

wampa

YOungster + EH

Howlrunner +PTL

Zeta ace+crack shot+comms

Fit to be TIEd: Zeta leader + wired+ comms

2X zeta

wampa

chaser

Zebra Herd: Zeta leader+wired +comms

4X zeta

academy

Could trade academy for comms on all the F/Os

TIE Died:

Zeta leader+juke+coms

howlrunner+PTL

Omega+ crackschot

YOungster+EH

Zeta ace+Crackshot

Wired has been freakin' awesome in the games I've used TIE/fo fighters in to date (I've had a few games with 5 omegas with Wired rather than crack shot). We have a lot of people with TLT stressbots, so turning throwing stress tokens into an active downside for people is a godsend. I'm actually hesitant to use Push The Limit for precisely that reason.

I agree on Comms Relay - the main limit is the number of Comms Relays I think I can lay my grubby mitts on. I wasn't here last weekend and the FLGS' entire stock of the new expansions disappeared in about 30 seconds...

At the same time, whilst Weapons Guidance + Wired isn't as good as Predator, it does provide more of a boost to Zeta Leader's toughness from return fire.

The Engine Upgrade is more because I've been trying to learn to outfly opponents rather than just play dice modification games - a much cheaper version (which would open up points elsewhere) would be a Comms Relay (if I can get hold of enough) and Adrenaline Rush - it's surprising how nasty a segnor's loop followed by a long barrel roll can be.

I realise it's kind of overkill on Epsilon Ace because he doesn't have enough actions to support it - it just feels like a tragic waste of potential not to have the option to abuse that lovely PS12.

Cubby09 - I like the lists, but sadly not for me; I'm fully aware it's kind of an unnecessary restriction (at least at the moment), but I want to do a pure TIE/fo list.
