New wording to End of Match conditions

By Lyraeus, in Star Wars: Armada

Anyone else notice this?

For those that have not I will quote it.

END OF MATCH

Each Star Wars: Armada match ends in one of the following ways:

• One Player Defeated: At the end of the current game round, all of one player’s ships are destroyed. The player with at least one ship remaining earns a win and the opposing player receives a loss. The players determine their scores.

• Mutual Destruction: At the end of the current game round, all of both players’ ships are destroyed. The player with the higher score earns a win and the opposing player receives a loss.

The bonded text is new, and actually has a pretty big impact.

So now, objectives like Fire Lanes and Contested Outpost can provide extra points!

It matters less for mutual destruction but for a tabling a single opponent that is some extra points possibly.

Funny for Fire Lanes is that you could overlap them and give your now tabled opponent more points.

Also means you'll start seeing fighters get parting shots after their ships have all died. Buff to carrier-independent fighters (Rhymerball and rogues).

Any number of things can happen, really. I think we're going to see more mutual destruction games. It's still not going to be commonplace, but... Well, for example, imagine the situation where an ISD and MC80 are the last two ships, the MC80 is right up against the edge of the table. Say the ISD charges in at speed 3 for the boxing-in ram, such that neither can move whole the other is alive, but the ISD will go off the table if the MC80 dies (see WWPDSteven's recent twitch game against prime opponent Sean for an example of this actually happening). Currently, the ISD could kill the MC80 and win it before moving; under the new ruling, the game will go on until after the ISD has flown off the table.

One could imagine similar "victory from the grave" things happening in close games due to asteroids, critical effects, parting shots from fighters, etc.

I just realized this myself today and I love it, it is such a subtle change that makes the game more interesting.

That said, best you can hope for is a 0 MoV, because Tournament Rules p3 under Scoring: "If two players have exactly the same score or both players'fleets are destroyed at the same time, the second player is the winner, but his or her MoV is 0."

Nice! thanks for pointing this out, I hadn't even noticed.

We used to homebrew play like this between friends in any case because it seemed more "fair and fun" but glad its now the actual way to play

So basically this is in place to force the last guy shooting to finish his turn (in cases where he'd fly off the board or land on an obstacle or any conditions leading to the destruction his ship) or a zombie ship finishes an opponent?

Just want to make sure I understand correctly.

That's my understanding, yeah.

does this also mean destroying all ships no longer grants full points of they still have squadrons? Since it says total points.

Well. My last game for the Vassal tourney had us Tie due to my insane superior position tokens...so i'd have technically lost it with a very low MoV for the winner.

Of course, this does sound nice to allow me at least one last round of my squadrons firing to, potentially, finish off my opponents ships for mutual annihilation and a potential win.

Oh snap...this: does it change granting squadron points when killing all ships?

No.

Scoring:

• If all of a player’s ships are destroyed, his or her fleet is worth 400 points, even if friendly squadrons remain in the play area or the fleet is worth less than 400 points. His or her opponent still adds any points scored from the objective to the 400 points scored for destroying the fleet

yeah I just saw that.... Got really excited for a second

Huh, I like this change, can greatly affect the scoring for a match. When did this get updated?

SCORING

Players always calculate their scores at the end of a match to determine the margin of victory, which is described below. Scores are calculated as described on page 9 of the Star Wars: Armada Rules Reference with the following exception:

• If all of a players ships are destroyed, his or her feet is worth 400 points, even if friendly squadrons remain in the play area or the feet is worth less than 300 points. His or her opponent still adds any points scored from the objective to the 400 points scored for destroying the feet.

So you get to finish the round. Excellent.

interested to see how this affects rieekans viability, i thought the winning via killing the opponents to trigure instant game over before the status phase was intentional with him
