I bought just the Core and Wave 1 - Is that okay since....

By Ken at Sunrise, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

I bought just the Core and Wave 1. Basically I bought just enough to replace the counters in the box with their figures. Unfortunate I've only played it once so far :( and am hoping to get some more gaming in.

How dramatically does this FAQ affect what I have. From what I was hearing I should down load it and use it.

Thoughts?

On a side note, from what I've seen the Core with Wave 1 should still make for an interesting and replayable game. I know it's like X-Wing, Armada, etc... where I can expand the game but I'm just hoping for a single purchase and play-ability.

I love to hear your thoughts on both questions.

Thank you,

1) I just looked over the FAQ. Its only three pages and *does apply to what you already have. It clarifies some of your missions and other rules. Its a helpful document, not like a patch or major change.

2) Very interesting and very replayable. If you're looking for a place to get off the merry-go-round before it goes another loop, this is the place. The "Waves" come in two types. One replaces the tokens (like wave one) and the other adds units not found in any sets (waves 3 and five). If you wanted to add to your set from here without adding any of the major expansions, you could get pieces from waves 3 and 5.

Skirmish: You now have so many choices of lists that you can try with the figures you have! If this was Pre-FAQ everyone would tell you "Well you should just by 4 Sabs and maybe another core for the RGs. However, now you can play Chewie in a list, a good rebel trooper list or possibly even Wiess and have fun + Be competitive.

Campaign: It's still the same, amazing campaign mode.

Skirmish: Drastically shakes up the metagame. Unique heroes and villains will actually hit the table.

Campaign: It’s a little unclear if the errata for the RG’s include the campaign mode, but the:

This is both thematically and mechanically unhealthy in the Skirmish and Campaign games.

line suggests that it’s a cross game mode change. RG’s don’t necessarily become an auto include during later campaign missions and they’ll start following unique bosses around instead of moving together.

So definitely print out the new cards.

As for buying just core + wave 1: Perfectly fine.

Campaign wise, despite different class cards/hero combinations, after about 3-4 full playthroughs, mission secrets are no longer secret and a sense of adventure is lost a little.

Depends how often you plan on playing/how many gaming groups you are a part of.

I would say that Hired Guns is a worthwhile purchase because it spices up the mercenary faction for skirmish lists and it’s fun to see them running around during underworld themed campaign missions.
